Bug#906194: addendum

2018-08-16 Thread G. Cabrele
Following the alternative way of downloading from Oracle, as indicated
in Debian Wiki guide,

the installation process ended with:
"vboxdrv.sh: failed: modprobe vboxdrv failed. Please use 'dmesg' to find
out why."

and dmesg tells:
"[43186.988394] vboxdrv: Requires SSE2 (cpuid(0).EDX=0x383fbff)".

Effectively my CPU features SSE, but not SSE2. Could be that the problem ?
Do the recent releases of VBox require SSE2 ?
since I could install vers. 1.30 on Stretch 9.4, can I install that on 9.5 ?
That seems to be the same problem that
prevents me from installing the most recent version of KDE desktop.
Which other package is requiring SSE2, and why that is not clearly
indicated ?

Regards

Bug#906194: virtualbox: fails to install backported VB on Stretch 9.5

2018-08-15 Thread G. Cabrele
Package: virtualbox
Version: 5.2.16-dfsg-3~bpo9+2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,
I tried and install VirtualBox on a clean installation of Stretch
9.5, from Stretch-backports, following the instructions given in Debian Wiki.

During the installation I got the following warning:
"...
Loading new virtualbox-5.2.16 DKMS files...
Building for 4.9.0-7-686-pae
Building initial module for 4.9.0-7-686-pae
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 4.9.0-7-686-pae (i686)

 Docs: man:systemd-sysv-generator(8)
  Process: 2983 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/virtualbox start (code=exited,
status=1/FAILURE)
 "

The file /var/.../make.log indicated above is attached.

Note that I could install successfully VB on a precedent installation of
Stretch 9.4, from the given backport at that time.
My (very elementary) knowledge of Linux environment does not allow me to
understand the cause of the problem.
Thanks for your attention

Bug#817259: reopen 817259

2016-03-21 Thread G. Cabrele

reopen 817259
I am reopening this bug, because in the meanwhile I read the check
instructions given in

https://www.debian.org/CD/faq/index.en.html#verify
and following the first method suggested (dd command with parameters
given by isosize)
I could determine that the checksums (md5 and sha1) of all the 3 DVDs
are ok.

Also the file by file check against the md5sum.txt was ok.
I repeated the installation -in expert mode- with different choices for
the architecture and/or desktop, but got the same problem.
I then tried the installation based only on 1st DVD (3.16.0-4-586+KDE),
which went on and concluded without problems,

and looks to be working properly.
Now, when I try to load some additional applications from DVD2 or 3, I
get some "strange" error messages of the type
"package .. is already installed and configured", although the procedure
looks then to conclude successfully.

No idea of where the problem comes from.
Thanks for the attention

Bug#817259: sorry, problem is due to corrupted DVD

2016-03-11 Thread G. Cabrele
Thanks to the help received from "Debian Forum" I could determine that
the the 2nd and 3rd DVD had a wrong md5sum, although they passed the
integrity check.
Sorry for the fake alert, the installer is actually ok, thanks for your
work.
