Bug#1018033: xjadeo: recommends unavailable packages mencoder and transcode

2022-08-24 Thread Gabriele Stilli
Package: xjadeo
Version: 0.8.11-1+b1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: superenz...@libero.it

Hi,

the package xjadeo recommends mencoder and transcode, but those packages
are currently unavailable in testing.

The package "mencoder" is part of the mplayer source, but the state of
mplayer in Debian is shaky at best, as described in this bug:
https://bugs.debian.org/1005899

The package "transcode" was removed from Debian in 2016.

Maybe it's better to try and find viable alternatives.

Cheers,
Gabriele :-)

Bug#973920: bash: malformed line in changelog.Debian.gz

2020-11-07 Thread Gabriele Stilli
Package: src:bash
Version: 2.01-0
Severity: minor

Hello,

a malformed line in changelog.Debian.gz triggers a warning when trying
to open said changelog inside aptitude. To reproduce it, open aptitude
(the ncurses interface), go to the "bash" package and press C (capital
C). The warning message is interspersed within the aptitude window, so
it can't be pasted here. I can't seem to reproduce it calling
aptitude-changelog-parser from the command line.

The guilty line seems to be:

"-- James Troup Thur, 19 June 1997 19:13:34
+0100"

(yes, that's 1997, a whopping 23 years ago). It belongs to bash version
2.01-0, hence the "Version:" header.

I suspect that changing "Thur," into "Thu," would fix the issue.

Sorry for digging up such an archeological find.

Gabriele Stilli

Hello,

after upgrading I tried to reinstall texlive-binaries a first time and
the error was there. Tried a second time and it was gone. Probably on
the first attempt the update-alternatives database was still broken and
needed a repair. Log follows. A third run didn't show the error either.

Thanks again!

Hello again,

just for information, apparently I can't reproduce the bug anymore. This
might mean that something has changed in my AppStream cache

aptitude version hasn't changed (and hopefully neither has its

It took me some time to notice the package renaming from "musescore" to

  * Rename binary packages to musescore3{,-common} for coïnstallability
(musescore{,-common} 2.x will stay around for buster’s lifetime, and
upstream says users should have both in parallel, for existing
scores)

(from 3.0.3+dfsg1-1, thus the Version: command above)

Now, I understand the reason for the change and have no problem myself
with the renaming and with installing a new package. I suspect, though,
that I wasn't the only user left in the cold and I wonder how many of
them know where to look to solve this. Could something be done, at least
to better document the change and suggest a solution?

Hopefully, at least, people will happen to read this bug and thus find
their way out :-)

Thanks for the great work!

Gabriele Stilli

Not sure we want to undergo all this at every sphinx version bump :-)

with the following:

2018-11-05 Thread Gabriele Stilli
Package: eboard
Version: 1.1.3-0.1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

which is now useless, obsolete and in conflict with eboard. When trying
to install eboard with the extras pack package installed it bailed out
with the following:

dpkg-deb: error: paste subprocess was killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:

Therefore a "Conflict: eboard-extras-pack1" line looks appropriate.

Of course purging eboard-extras-pack1 worked around the problem, and it
should be removed from Debian as well, but this is another report.

Bug#901931: the soundsystem still breaks after todays timidity and timidity-daemon upgrade to 2.14.0-8

2018-06-30 Thread Gabriele Stilli
Hi,

I think the problem is related to the fact that, on a Debian system
running pulseaudio, timidity-daemon still tries to add the "timidity"
user to the "audio" group. It shouldn't. On such systems (at least those
where the pulseaudio daemon is not being run system-wide) the "audio"
group should be empty. This is well explained here:
https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/User/PerfectSetup/
section «Should users be in the "audio" group?».

Emptying the "audio" group and rebooting the box fixed the issue.

(To whoever might read: only do this after taking precautions)

Hope this helps. Thanks for your work!

Cheers,
Gabriele :-)

Bug#722497: apt-cacher-ng, apt: Waiting for headers without progress

2013-12-12 Thread Gabriele Stilli
Package: apt-cacher-ng, apt
Followup-For: Bug #722497

Hello,

I was experiencing this bug too. The client stopped at almost every file,
waiting for 1 minute before starting the download. This didn't happen
100% of the times, though. This was up to version 0.7.19-1 of
apt-cacher-ng. However, I just updated to 0.7.20-2 and the insane
behaviour seems stopped and the updates work smoothly.

To better understand the cause of the bug, I attach the information you
required from the submitter. This is from version 0.7.19-1 which showed
the bug. The wireshark log was filtered with ip.addr == 46.4.205.44; if
this is not the right way to do, I'd appreciate a hint since I'm not a
wireshark expert.

I'll follow up if something new appears.

Cheers,
Gabriele :-)

Bug#674963: Warning: Illegal string offset 'field' in UpdateQuery_sqlite-removeFieldsInCondition()

2012-05-28 Thread Gabriele Stilli
Package: drupal7

Severity: normal

Hello,

in several pages I get the following (sometimes repeated over and over):

Warning: Illegal string offset 'field' in
UpdateQuery_sqlite-removeFieldsInCondition() (line 79 of
/usr/share/drupal7/includes/database/sqlite/query.inc).

To reproduce the problem, just install drupal7, configure it to use
sqlite, open the home page and log in (I used my admin user and the error
shows up in many places, both in the content pages and in the admin
panels).

A similar problem was corrected by this patch:
http://drupal.org/node/1414412

Maybe thy thought it would fix this one too, but it didn't.

Here a patch that would solve the problem; the submitter was asked to
reroll it against Drupal 8.x:

Bug#639751: icecast2: postinst doesn't release console after configuration

2011-08-29 Thread Gabriele Stilli
Package: icecast2
Version: 2.3.2-7
Severity: important

Hello,

when ENABLE=true, configuring icecast results in dpkg keeping hold of
the console and never releasing it.

When doing e.g. dpkg-reconfigure icecast2, and answering the
questions from debconf, the screen just says:

Stopping icecast2: icecast2.
Starting icecast2: Starting icecast2
Detaching from the console
icecast2.

but apparently the daemon is never detached and dpkg never quits.

I had to temporarily set ENABLE=false and repeat the configuration
stage to work around this problem.

On the other hand, calling /etc/init.d/icecast2 start or
invoke-rc.d icecast2 start by hand works flawlessly.

Setting severity to important because this can affect system upgrades,
as the package manager never moves on after configuring icecast2.

Any other info available on request.

Gabriele :-)

Bug#626455: No more mouse and keyboard after yesterday's upgrade

2011-05-18 Thread Gabriele Stilli
mercoledì 18 maggio 2011, alle 16:56, Gabriele Stilli scrive:

Yesterday I upgraded my Wheezy to the latest version of all packages
and today I found that my mouse and keyboard were totally unresponsive
and were not recognized. Apart from this, X, the window manager and
the apps at startup loaded just fine.

Update: I concocted a working xorg.conf for my configuration. In
brief, it's the file resulting from Xorg -configure, with the
addition of the ServerFlags section to disable udev/evdev/whatever:

Section ServerFlags
Option AutoAddDevices false
Option AllowEmptyInput false
Option DontZap false
EndSection

Of course this is just a workaround, since I'd really like to have
evdev working, but it's good to have X back while I investigate
further on the matter :-)

I attach my xorg.conf. As usual, any info available on request.

Cheers,
Gabriele :-)

2010-07-08 Thread Gabriele Stilli
martedì 06 luglio 2010, alle 11:01, Pierre Habouzit scrive:

We've understood the bug, it's because binary packages from OOo haven't
a consistent version number, as uno is often installed first, it's the
version that is used for OOo, sadly the uno version is 1.6.something
which is *very* old in the terms of OOo (which is 1:3.something).

I do agree with this analysis. I've been hit again by the bug with the
last OOo upgrade to squeeze, where I upgraded all the OOo-related
packages (including the uno packages) and nothing else (at least in that
run).

Maybe I'll do some more tests, but it seems that this is the right
explaination for the bug.

mercoledì 23 dicembre 2009, alle 17:29, Mike Hommey scrive:

The places.sqlite file is big, there is hope stuff might be still in
there. Could you try running the following:

sqlite3 places.sqlite
SQLite version 3.6.21
Enter .help for instructions
Enter SQL statements terminated with a ;
sqlite select count(*) from moz_historyvisits;
87
sqlite select count(*) from moz_bookmarks;
74

The history count is apparently quite low.

Regarding the bookmarks, I almost only had the defaults in there, apart
from one or two bookmarks of mine (I mostly rely on my history, that's
why I was so disappointed to see it disappear).

Let me know of any other information I could provide.

Merry Christmas and happy new year,
Gabriele :-)

Did you try running strings on the sqlite files ?

I backed up my profile shortly after the upgrade; alas, apparently too
late. Looking at places.sqlite with strings apparently shows only sites
I visited *after* the misdeed has been done.

I'll keep on looking, tho.

Can you check if you have other files containing these information ?
You could be a victim of a bad profile upgrade from before sqlite to
 sqlite.

Most probably I am :-)

I can't find any other file that could hold the required info. But I'll
keep on searching. In the meanwhile, this is an 'ls -rRtla' of the
mentioned backup of my profile's directory, should you notice something
interesting that I'm missing; the Iceweasel upgrade was done on December
9th.

Thanks again,
Gabriele :-)

Bug#560329: iceweasel: browsing and form histories disappeared on upgrade

2009-12-10 Thread Gabriele Stilli
Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.5.5-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

yesterday I upgraded IW from 3.0.14-1 to 3.5.5-1 (I use squeeze); on
closing and reopening, after a log time of HD churning and whatnot, I
found my whole browsing history and form completions were totally
gone. I'm perusing the .sqlite databases with the SQLite Manager
extension, but apparently the previous items disappeared for good.
What could it be?

I was going to file this as grave since it's a data loss somehow, but
I was not sure about this.

Hi,

thanks for answering and for all your work.

I'd already read that list and I thought the 2008-1 upload had fixed
those issues, as per the 2008-1 changelog (that bug was closed by that
update). I understand it isn't so. Are all those stoppers still alive?
Are there any others?

Please check whether changebar , or some more recent variant, is
distributed with your LaTeX installation. If so, then it can be omitted
from here, as it will be available anyway.

changebar.sty is available in texlive-latex-extra in Debian (but maybe
you know this) :-)

Best,
Gabriele :-)

Bug#541142: scid: cannot load ECO file

2009-08-11 Thread Gabriele Stilli
Package: scid
Version: 1:3.7.3.cvs20090702-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

when opening scid, I get:

Trying to load the ECO openings file...
Unable to open the ECO file: /usr/share/scid/scid.eco

which is correct, since the ECO file is in /usr/share/scid/data .

Moreover, the Options/Load ECO file entry menu is greyed out and
therefore I cannot choose the new location of the file. As a result, I
cannot classify my new games by ECO.

I could still edit the configuration file manually, but a user should
never resort to this, exept in corner cases.

Cheers,
Gabriele :-)

Bug#415200: iceweasel: crashes on opening preferences

I was suffering this error too and it disappeared after setting
ICEWEASEL_DSP to 'none' in /etc/iceweasel/iceweaselrc (its value was

Uh, I almost forgot about this old report :-)

I already have ICEWEASEL_DSP set to 'none' (since, long, I guess, but I
don't really know).

And, if I remember well, the crash disappeared after a reboot and never
reappeared.

So, maybe this bug is a false alarm (maybe something else was causing the
crash?) and should be closed :-)

Anyhow, thank you for the suggestion :-)

Bug#415200: iceweasel: crashes on opening preferences

2008-10-19 Thread Gabriele Stilli
lunedì 20 ottobre 2008, alle 02:05, Alberto Garcia scrive:

I saw no relation between a crash in the preferences dialog and the
audio output driver used by Iceweasel, so it took me a while to try to
change that setting (I suspected of many many other things).

For the record, I just tried to change the DSP option to auto and the
preferences dialog didn't crash. Therefore, this doesn't seem to be the
problem.

Anyway, that's just my humble opinion, I'm not the reporter nor the
 maintainer, I'm only a random user :)

That mostly agrees with mine :-) Close the bug or tag it unreproducible,
hoping that someone else who's hit by the crash comes up with better
information than ours :-)

Thanks again,
Gabriele :-)

Bug#430132: debreaper: sends bug reports of its own

2007-06-22 Thread Gabriele Stilli
Package: debreaper
Version: 0.2.1
Severity: normal

Hi,

when amule crashes on me (and it does crash quite often) debreaper
does its work of collecting all relevant stack info, then sends the
report without prompting me

This is quite embarassing for me, as well as annoying for the poor
amule maintainer, who had to cope with about 5 identical bug reports
in a row (shame on me, OK).

To reproduce the bug, simply make amule crash (on my system it crashes
if you close about 2-3 search tabs) and pull out the network cable
before the bug report is sent :-)

By now, this happened only with amule, and not with anything else.

How can I stop this, apart from purging debreaper? :-)

Thank you,
Gabriele :-)

I use Mutt, and this is the mailer debreaper fires up, too.

I did not configure the DEBREAPER_MAILER variable, though. Is it relevant
for this issue?

Anyhow, this behaviour happens only with amule, as I said; with other
programs (eboard, audacious) Mutt behaves nicely :-) What can be so
different from the other programs?

Thank you,
Gabriele :-)

Bug#429425: sun-java6-bin: generates dangling symlinks for manpages

2007-06-17 Thread Gabriele Stilli

Hi,

I get this warning from cron-daily almost every day:

/etc/cron.daily/man-db:

mandb: warning: /usr/share/man/man1/java.1.gz is a dangling symlink

mandb: warning: /usr/share/man/man1/rmiregistry.1.gz is a dangling symlink

Apparently, when upgrading from sun-java5, the correct manpage links are
not created and e.g. /usr/share/man/man1/keytool.1.gz still points (via
/etc/alternatives/keytool.1.gz) to the old
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0.10/jre/man/man1/keytool.1.gz instead of
the correct one. Same for the other links.

Thank you,
Gabriele :-)

Bug#415200: iceweasel: crashes on opening preferences

2007-03-17 Thread Gabriele Stilli
sabato 17 marzo 2007, alle 08:42, Mike Hommey scrive:

Could you install the iceweasel-dbg package and run iceweasel -g, type
run on the prompt you will get, go to your crash and then give us the
 result for bt full ?

Erm... apparently, rebooting the machine solved the problem: Iceweasel
doesn't crash anymore on opening preferences. Nothing else changed.

Sorry for the hassle. Feel free to close the bug or to ask me for other
informations, at your leisure.

Just for the record, it all started while I was investigating why
mozilla-plugin-vlc was crashing bot Iceweasel and Galeon every *second*
time I loaded a file managed by the plugin (any file, be it the same file
or different files). At a point, the crash-on-second-load was not so
regular anymore (it may crash after more than two files) and the
crash-on-preference introduces itself. This morning, on reboot, the
preference crashes disappeared, but the VLC plugin (more or less
regularly) keeps crashing after two (or more) load/unload cycles.

Who know what happened in between.

But this will be the subject of another, (I hope) properly documented
bug report.

Thank you and sorry again.
Gabriele :-)
