I can see why pythran would want to use the compiler and scipy want to
get the maximum advantage.
Still, if it's not necessary, this is a big drawback and especially so
if an application was depending
on these through some chain.

One solution that comes to mind would be having two versions of some
part of this chain where
one depends on and uses a compiler and the other doesn't. Both would
provide the dependency
but have different build options. Some conflict or replacement scheme
would stop installing both.
This would be extra trouble of course.

Bug#1020561: python3-scipy: Scipy upgrade requires c++ compiler

2022-09-23 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: python3-scipy
Version: 1.7.3-2
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: x...@iki.fi

Dear Maintainer,

I was running an regular upgrade and noticed a colossal rise in required space.
It seems that python3-scipy requires c++-compiler via python3-pythran.
The difference seems to be in order of 600 MB.

Any change this could be optional? It makes the package much harder to install
and use on any sort of production machine which doesn't normally need
mahoosive compiler packages and their assorted headaches and security risks.

Bug#1017620: kicad: Minor kicad upgrade forces install of tons of dev packages and tcl+tk?

Dear Maintainer,

An upgrade has turned up:

   kicad (6.0.6+dfsg-1 => 6.0.7+dfsg-1+b1)

Trying to install that leads to a massive load of dev packages and tcl

application let alone a minor package upgrade.

(On my machine, not original reporter..)
The obnoxious popup dialog appears twice also if given a correct password.
It appears on every resume (at least) and has no user discernible effect on
anything
and there is no obvious reasib why it happens, what should be done, or whether
it
can be disabled somehow.

This is a massive usability fail IMO, and makes people hate and uninstall

Tried again in small stages and after hitting the extensions enable
switch I got a little more focused journal:

Interestingly, while it did happen with both installed extensions disabled,
using the disable switch at the top of the new Extensions dialog did make
overview work correctly again.

Bug#1008588: gnome-shell: Overview shows no windows at all, only tiny desktops and launchers and blank space between

2022-03-29 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: gnome-shell
Version: 41.4-1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: x...@iki.fi

Dear Maintainer,

After last upgrade, overview no longer shows the windows on the workspace.
Also, overview background is all grey instead of actual desktop background.
And, as usual, vertical workspaces extension has been broken by upgrade.
Only other installed extension is Freon.

Bug#987029: gnome-books: Starts, but does not work, UI fail

2021-04-15 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: gnome-books
Version: 3.34.0-4
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: x...@iki.fi

Dear Maintainer,

I noticed gnome-books and decided to test it. Apt install and start lead to a
partial blank
window. Top menu exists, but there is nothing in the books window. Also no
decoration (title
bar, x).

Selecting quit from window leads to a few messages:

Apr 15 23:01:31 bastet gnome-books[36296]: Attempting to call back into JSAPI
during the sweeping phase of GC. This is most likely caused by not destroying a
Clutter actor or Gtk+ widget with ::destroy signals connected, but can also be
caused by using the destroy(), dispose(), or remove() vfuncs. Because it would
crash the application, it has been blocked and the JS callback not invoked.

be. Nothing is

Thank you. That actually is what I've been using on one box.
Apart from the DRI3 error mentioned in another bug, I think it works.
Hopefully it will drift to sid and there on. I think it's a very
significant package and release.

I am on wayland and that does look like it could be it.

1.4-9 puts things back to normal. It would be nice to get gtk3 going forward
everywhere. Funny that I haven't seen any rendering problems with any

It was not on. Interestingly enough, turning it on makes the image
area black without a grey box.

Bug#905953: geeqie: No image or splash displayed, only a grey box

2018-08-12 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: geeqie
Version: 1:1.4-8
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

Updated to 1:1.4-7, presumably from 1:1.4-6.
Also tried 1:1.4-8 from SID with same effect.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Started geeqie from gnome3 launcher, as usual.
Starting from command line has same results, no extra output.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Geeqie starts with a grey box instead of the logo in the image area.
Most things work, but navigating to images only shows a grey box.
E.g. the (i)mage info boxes show correct data, dimensions show, even the
show pixel info pipette shows seemingly sensible numbers when hovering
over the image area.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Seeing an actual image :)

I also moved away the .config/geeqie directory. Settings were reset, but
viewer behaved the same.

This could be a library thing, of course, or something else that has
happened in the upgrade or recent reboot.
But throwing it in in case someone else comes across this.
At the moment, the only image viewer I know with an easy move/newdir
function is useless and I can't import and sort my photos.

Bug#842436: udisks2 suggests btrfs-tools, which is a transitional package

2016-10-29 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: udisks2
Version: 2.1.7-3
Severity: minor

Dear Maintainer,

I noticed, while upgrading, that udisks suggests btrfs-tools. The reason
I didn't have that installed is that it looks like it's been replaced
with btrfs-progs. The other package is marked as a transitional dummy
depending on this. I don't know if it affects older distributions, but
I expect it will be going away.

Just in case it hasn't been noticed :)

That appears to work. I also tried restoring the kicad config dir
from before after the install and everything seems to function
and no further errors.

Bug#816525: kicad: Fails to start, wxPython not found

2016-03-02 Thread Harri Haataja
If I had to guess at the previous version I've run, I think it would have been
4.0.1+dfsg1-1.

I removed the directory and the same error pops up.
The dialog says "pcbnewInitPythonScripting() failed" that doesn't seem
to be logged.

Only now the program interestingly seems to continue working as far as
I can tell.
I tried a new blank project an opening the one that I tried before.
I suspect there's still something causing that and this (give or take
a few package
versions) update didn't exactly work smoothly here, even though
removing the config
seems to have made it work again.

2016-03-02 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: kicad
Version: 4.0.2+dfsg1-3
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Kicad has run before, perhaps the version I had before last update.

Now:
Started Kicad (from command line now to trap output).
The Initial window comes up, recent project open.
Clicking the pcbnew layout editor button makes an error pop up.
After 'ok', the program no longer closes from X or quit but needs xkill or ^C
from terminal.
Clicking the pcbnew button again makes the editor pop up but none of the menus
(and probably more) doesn't seem to work.

A dependency problem?

Bug#807648: zyne: Fails to start (missing dep for wx?)

2015-12-11 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: zyne
Version: 0.1.2-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Trying to start zyne:
$ zyne
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/zyne", line 3, in
  import wxversion
  ImportError: No module named wxversion

The executable tries to load several wx libs, but none of them are
mentioned in package dependencies.

Installing python-wxversion leads to
$ zyne
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/zyne", line 4, in
wxversion.select("2.8")
File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/wxversion.py", line 152, in select
raise VersionError("Requested version of wxPython not found")
wxversion.VersionError: Requested version of wxPython not found

I'm not sure what would satisfy 2.8. Doesn't seem that installing
python-wxgtk3.0 will do. The plain lib package I have and I'm not really
familiar with the lib, let alone the Python bindings.

Bug#646125: empathy: Certificate complaints of every connect despite selecting "remember"

2011-10-21 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: empathy
Version: 3.2.0.1-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

(Running empathy etc off sid to get spam blocking. Which doesn't work,
of course.)

Connecting to wlan, (re)connecting to an account, starting empathy or in
any other way opening a connection to a service such as Google Talk.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Connection shows a popup window:

This connection is untrusted.
Would you like to continue anyway.
The certificate is self-signed.
...
[x] Remember this choice..
[Cancel] >[Continue]<
-

   * What was the outcome of this action?

No notices of any kind, connection works. Until next connect, every
time, when the same dialog pops up again, for each account (XMPP, at
least).

No output from empathy, no apparent logs, no other trace.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

No more popups from the same service.

Bug#598803: X crashes / hung gpu, now and then

2011-04-21 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Followup-For: Bug #598803

This is an FSC Amilo M1450G laptop.

Installing 2:2.15.0-1 from sid made the random hang go away for me.
It's been over a day now, running and suspended, with no incident.
Previously it would happen within a few minutes, at random, in normal
use with 2.6.38 but never with 2.6.32 (kept as a backup kernel).

Logs:

Apr 11 20:34:15 iofiel kernel: [ 3331.024067] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed]

Bug#614607: Strange pin icon in geeqie toolbar

2011-02-22 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: geeqie
Version: 1:1.0-7

Today I noticed that geeqie has a rather odd (fat, scaled?) pin icon on
the toolbar. It might be some odd icon/theme issue, too, but I'll post
this to geeqie since that's where I see it.

Bug#598718: X does not start with KMS deactivated

2010-10-20 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel

There was a good reason for the modeset to be disabled: it completely
broke the console on many machines.

Apparently that issue has been fixed, at least on my laptop (FSC Amilo
M1450G) and allowing modeset works now. I don't know if this is the case
for all other machines.

Severity: normal

/usr/share/awesome/lib/obvious/wlan/readme says:
This widget monitors your WLAN's signal strength. To set the device it
monitors, use
obvious.wlan.set_device(dev)

There is no such function, though. Apparently this kind of line works instead:
obvious.wlan.device = "eth2"

Adding the actual widget to wibox leaves a blank space where I put it
and the item itself appears to the left under window titles (default
config). Apparently it ignores the position completely somehow.

I haven't noticed anything new except that there may be a glibc
error message or such in sight before the xterm in question
flickers out of existence.

Bug#402385: mailutils: sieve deletes mail after fileinto from mbox but not maildir

2006-12-09 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: mailutils
Version: 1:0.6.1-4sarge2
Severity: normal

I have a recipe that should move certain mailing list mails from an
inbox (offlineimap) to a local mailbox. Trying to move into an mbox
blows up IIRC, so I made a maildir. The recipe moves mail happily from a
test mbox file (given with -f) into the maildir, but running the same
recipe with -f argument pointing to a maildir only copies the mail.

Also, the -d flag behaves differently. Notably there's no sight of
debug output while -f points to a maildir.

I'm afraid my test data is gone now, but here's the script:

/*
 * A sieve script for sorting haskell-cafe stuff away from inbox.
 */
require ["fileinto"];

if header :is "List-Id" "The Haskell Cafe "
{fileinto "mail/haskell-cafe";}

Bug#350746: fail2ban: Only block new connects

2006-01-31 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: fail2ban
Version: 0.6.0-3
Severity: minor

If two users access a host with fail2ban from the same originating ip,
login failures from one of them will also lock the other one out.

I've been using a small change in the rules that, I believe, will block
only new connects instead of already established one. This way, at
least, another users' already running ssh sessions will not be suddenly
frozen by someone/something other tripping fail2ban. New connects will
still be blocked from/to any source/user as the approach is based on ip
address blocking.

I changed the INPU rules in the config to say:

Bug#349342: dillo: File list (dpi) leaves out filenames starting with a hashmark

2006-01-22 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: dillo
Version: 0.8.5-4

So I got the idea of quickly looking at my irc logs with dillo. I was
surprised to find that only query logs were available, but channel logs
weren't. I suspected this would be because the logs are named

On another server (and dir), a channel with & prefix appears in the
list. A test appears to confirm this:

The locale system is ugly, certainly, but at least there is the ISO 8601.

Bug#333332: evince: Reading from stdin apparently not possible

2005-10-11 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: evince
Version: 0.4.0-1
Severity: wishlist

There doesn't appear to be any way to read the data from stdin. So
reading from a filter has to be done by messing with temporary files.

There is no indication, but it seems that - as an argument is completely
ignored. Using /proc/self/fd/0 yields a dialog (ugh) with some mime
error.

I couldn't find anything about this in any (of the little) docs either.

Bug#333293: gauche: copy-file to full dst does not signal an error

2005-10-11 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: gauche
Version: 0.8.4-1
Severity: normal

I was playing with some code (gdumpfs) that copies/links a lot of files.
Particularly I wanted to make a saner output that doesn't log all
successes when run from cron, but only errors. It seems to me, that the
function copy-file doesn't actually signal anything when the destination
filesystem is full.

Tried running an example from the README:

Neither of those directories do exist. SNMPv2-MIB.yaml and others can be found
in /usr/share/doc/libsnmp-ruby1.8/yaml/ which is under doc. I have no real idea
what should be happening as I'm just looking at this, but it certainly stopped

Running anything under /usr/share/doc/libsnmp-ruby1.8/examples/ seems to
produce same results.

Bug#329204: munin: print() on closed filehandle STATS -errors

2005-09-20 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: munin
Version: 1.2.3-3
Severity: minor

Recently a munin installation began spitting out tons of cron mail. This
time it was:
print() on closed filehandle STATS at /usr/share/munin/munin-graph line 1125.
print() on closed filehandle STATS at /usr/share/munin/munin-graph line 1125.
print() on closed filehandle STATS at /usr/share/munin/munin-graph line 1125.
print() on closed filehandle STATS at /usr/share/munin/munin-graph line 396.
.. and the like, over and over. Line numbers are from 1.2.3-1.

I found out that /var/lib/munin/ had changed ownership to root.root
during some changes and I believe munin apparently could no longer
create the tmp files on it.

unless ($skip_stats)
{
  open (STATS,">$config->{dbdir}/munin-graph.stats.tmp") or logger("Unable to
open $config->{dbdir}/munin-graph.stats.tmp");
}

The entry really does appear in munin logs (from whence even logcheck
won't pull it by default) and does not enter the cron output. This leads
to somewhat baffling a situation, but it doesn't seem too hard to dig
out more detail.

Just an odd situation that causes odd behaviour. Thought I'd report it
if someone wants to improve the error reporting in these kind of cases.

Bug#325142: alsa-utils: udev 0.6* and kernel-2.6.12 in odd state

2005-09-04 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: alsa-utils
Version: 1.0.9a-3
Followup-For: Bug #325142

Just dropping a note here that the udev in unstable is .. in a nasty state.
Many udev bugs show this. I believe that currently installing the new
udev will break (along with large parts of the system) when booting into
2.6.8 kernels. Older udev OTOH no longer has a working alsa-utils
available (this bug). No idea how that deals with a newer kernel.

The responses to most if not all bugs on udev seem very hostile and
there doesn't seem to be a sane fix in sight. Not to alsa, 1394(?) or
.8 vs .12 issues nor to who knows what.

The version in unstable appears to depend on a more recent kernel. So, it seems
to me, alsa-utils in uninstallable and if you happened to lose the old version
while upgrading alsa-base, you can't neatly get it back except by hunting for
it from the pool. (I couldn't find it, actually.)

So you'll end up with a host without alsa-mixer, alsaconf, alsactl etc. It
seems this has been so for a good while now.

Bug#291112: bittornado: BT hangs on disk full

2005-08-04 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: bittornado
Version: 0.3.11-4
Followup-For: Bug #291112

I'm not sure how the gui part will work, but I've noticed that if I have
btdownloadmanycurses running and it fills the volume, the process will
hang. Deleting some of the downloads won't work as the file is still
open in the BT process. Disk will stay full.

But, ^C will also not quit the curses version as usual. It seems to be
hung. I haven't checked what would happen if I freed space in some other
way. Kill will still stop it, free the file (and the space) and a newly
launched version will run normally. I don't see ghost processes.

If the gui runs some other process or thread to do its downloads or
something, maybe this is also what happens to the worker. Window closes
fine, but the download/save/... worker is still stuck.

Bug#304319: Guile/mailutils random-ish segfault

2005-04-12 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: mailutils
Version: 1:0.6-2
Severity: normal

I have a script that goes through mailboxes, marking, filtering and
deleting certain messages. Occasionally it seems to segfault as guile
dumps core. No backtrace, but a full core dump. I can't seem to figure
out where it comes from. Even getting the debug symbols is tedious.

I may have marginally more verbose dumps somewhere, but nevertheless the
problem looks the same. Some GC stumble perhaps? It doesn't happen in
any deterministic way as far as I can see. But usually seems to happen
in longer runs and when an opened mailbox has gone out of scope and
another one is being processed.

It may also be that while on 2.4 kernels I see these segfaults, on 2.6 I
kept seeing an odd hang instead. Details escape me as this has been a
while already.

Bug#301962: libmailutils0: config options, info pages

2005-03-29 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: libmailutils0
Version: 1:0.6-2
Followup-For: Bug #301962

I stumbled across the idea of doing
% mailutils-config --link all
-L/usr/lib -lmu_mbox -lmu_mh -lmu_maildir -lmu_imap -lmu_pop -lmu_nntp
-lmailbox -lmuauth -lgnutls -lgcrypt -lpam -ldl

This seems "complete". The man page, like others, points to info and
recommends a command that doesn't work. I believe there's another bug
open about this. "info mailutils mailutils-config" works, but doesn't
seem to give anything even related to the command.

The whole manual is also rather sparse :(

Testing it on a mailbox also works. It seems that using the library is

inadequate output.

Bug#300729: gtk-gnutella: Quit doesn't

2005-03-21 Thread Harri Haataja
Package: gtk-gnutella
Version: 0.95-3
Severity: normal

I tried to quit gtkg (which I still do occasionally "before it
segfaults" even though I haven't seen that in a while) but nothing
happened. I thought maybe key bindings are broken, but menu entry or
closing the window don't give the quit confirm dialog either.

Seeing the term from where it was started, each quit attempt adds:

All other packages seem to fill 0.7.4.2, but gauche-gl uses 0.8.3.

I suppose this is some kind of an api version mixup in the builds.
I'm afraid I can't figure out what, if anything, README.Debian is
saying about this.
Any way, it would be nice to be able to load the extension like the
docs say. Or at least have this and a workaround explained in the docs.
