Bug#715477: coreutils: man sort - --key option should refer reader to POS pattern later on.

2013-07-09 Thread Imran Chaudhry
Package: coreutils
Version: 8.5-1
Severity: normal

The option in the man page is:

  --key=POS1[,POS2]

which to me meant POS means an simple integer, but this did not provide the
result I wanted. It was only through searching online did I realize that POS is
a pattern. It is in fact explained later in the man page:

POS is F[.C][OPTS], where F is the field number and C the character position
in the field...

To prevent confusion, I would suggest something like (see below ... ) against
the --key option like this:

--key=POS1[,POS2] (see below for POS pattern format)

Thanks

Bug#579955: Disable the links on the website?

2013-04-21 Thread Imran Chaudhry
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi there,

I looked into fixing some of the HTTP 404s here:
http://www-master.debian.org/build-logs/urlcheck/doc which led me to
this bug report.

Just wanted to highlight the urlcheck above in case you didn't know. I
guess it would be best of the links could also disappear if that
language build is disabled.

Thanks

Bug#381555: Patch for image digest links

2013-04-10 Thread Imran Chaudhry
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hey there Team debian-www,

I have attached a patch for this (or rather the whole .wml files).

As it would seem excessive to have a separate digest for every
architecture (and indeed, the particular architecture involved was not
mentioned) I have instead opted to include a short paragraph
explaining in a general way how to get at the image digests.

Thanks,
Imran

Bug#363496: Patches for this bug

2013-04-09 Thread Imran Chaudhry
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hey there Team debian-www,

I want to get involved in maintaining debian.org and as a step towards
that I have submitted some patches for this bug.

Please note that I removed the Persian entry as the link was dead and
my attempt to get in touch with the publisher resulted in a dead email
account.

Same goes for one of the Korean entries.

I have compiled the WML and it all looks OK. Note that my changes are
for the English language only.

Personally I think it might be prudent to give the list a further trim
to discard anything older than old stable. Just an idea as in my
experience most organizations upgrade to the new stable within a year
of release.

Thanks,
Imran

Bug#679830: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: Kernel bug observed in syslog when performing an rsync operation.

2012-07-22 Thread Imran Chaudhry

Sorry to hear this. I cannot recommend using ext4 in Linux 2.6.32.

Thanks for your reply Ben.

As an aside, from what kernel version would you recommend use of ext4 in?

Maybe I should use (tried and rusted) ext3 for my backup devices. I
mentioned this problem in my local LUG and a couple of people reported
similar problems with ext4.

Kernel bug observed in syslog when performing an rsync operation. I use
rsnapshot and I believe an rsnapshot operation conflicted or interfered

source filesystem had a corrupt filesystem. If it is relevant I was using the

Bug#654988: base: Setting new location using Gnome fails to change the timezone and time.

2012-01-07 Thread Imran Chaudhry
Package: base
Severity: normal
Tags: l10n

I visited Karachi, Pakistan (GMT+5) for a holiday from the UK. When I set my
new location to Karachi, it failed to show the correct time. If I set it
manually, it reverts to the old time.

I have blacklisted linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 but it is always attempted to be

Bug#575802: apticron: Exists with return code 1, related to timezone change to BST

2010-03-29 Thread Imran Chaudhry
Package: apticron
Version: 1.1.27
Severity: important

Yesterday the timezone in the UK changed from GMT to BST. This happened
at 0100 on March 28 2010
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Summer_Time) and I believe is
related to output below from cron:

/etc/cron.daily/apticron:
date: invalid date `1:52'
run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/apticron exited with return code 1

It appears someone reported something similar last year:
http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-bugs-dist@lists.debian.org/msg635747.html

I suggest changing the time apticron runs to 0252 from 0152 here:
/etc/cron.d/apticron

# cat apticron
# cron entry for apticron

52 1 * * * root test -x /usr/sbin/apticron /usr/sbin/apticron --cron

Thanks,
Imran-UK

Bug#558381: closed by Rene Engelhard r...@debian.org (Re: Bug#558381: multitail: Produces an error when using a non-existent file)

2009-11-30 Thread Imran Chaudhry
As topic, but here is an example:

 # multitail auth.log
  --*- multitail 5.2.2 (C) 2003-2007 by folk...@vanheusden.com -*--

A problem occured at line 1010 in function do_commandline (from file
 cmdline.c):

 Error opening file auth.log.

errno variable (if applicable): 2 which means No such file or directory

And you probably can explain me why this is a bug? Why should tail'ing
(and nothing else is what multitail does) a non-existing file work?

Rene,

Perhaps the subject of my bug report has been taken too literally.

As shown above, multitail appears to throw an assertion and reveals
the innards somewhat. To a non-C coder and user like myself it looks
like something has gone wrong.

Multitail should do what tail does and report: multitail: cannot open
`auth.log' for reading: No such file or directory

 No bug - close.

Please reconsider.

[ BTW, WTF did you file this bug *3* times? ]

*I* didn't but my MTA did. There was clearly a problem.

Regards,
Imran

Bug#557094: libapache2-mod-auth-mysql: auth_mysql should not be enabled with auth_basic

2009-11-19 Thread Imran Chaudhry
Package: libapache2-mod-auth-mysql
Version: 4.3.9-11

When enabling this module the auth_basic module should be disabled. The
auth_basic module is enabled and installed by default. Having both enabled
causes an error in the Apache error log like Bad file descriptor: Could not

Bug#557098: xen-hypervisor-3.2-1-amd64: Using vcpus=2 causes the guest to hang after some time

2009-11-19 Thread Imran Chaudhry
Package: xen-hypervisor-3.2-1-amd64
Version: 3.2.1-2
Severity: normal

I have a dual-core host. I wanted to give one of my guests use of 2 vcpus and
use of both real cpus.

I had the following in my config file for the guest:

vcpus = 2
cpus = 0,1

This appeared to work correctly and I saw a big difference in the load average
(the guest is monitored by munin-node).

However after 12 hours or so, the guest simply stopped responding and froze. I
saw nothing obvious in the sar system activity report, the xend log, the guest
logs, guest syslog etc. It just froze at a localtime between 0647 and 0650 (if
thats significant?).

A quick Google found a few reports of the same issue but I did not go into more
details. I reverted to the default of vcpu=1 and no trouble has been had.

Bug#454147: Kernel bug related to setting BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=yes

2009-06-03 Thread Imran Chaudhry
Like the above folks, I have also experienced this issue. Twice in a row.

My hypervisor system:
Linux xencore 2.6.26-2-xen-amd64 #1 SMP Fri Mar 27 07:12:15 UTC 2009 x86_64
GNU/Linux
# cat /etc/debian_version
5.0.1

Guest:
Linux imrandev.soton.smoothwall.net 2.6.26-2-xen-amd64 #1 SMP Fri Mar 27
07:12:15 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
# cat /etc/debian_version
5.0.1

I noticed that this occured after I set BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=yes (formerly
BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=no) in
/etc/default/bootlogd in my guest.

I was curious to see what boot up messages would be logged. There was
probably no reason to do this since /var/log/boot only shows the default
logging entry.

Below is what was shown on the xm console guest screen. When I connected
this way I could not send any input to the terminal.
