Bug#743060: Update on bug 743060

2014-03-31 Thread Jack Wilborn
I have the system up. The install incorrectly identified me as having
network communications, which it did not. My only thought when I saw that
the ftp address for the Debian mirror was wrong, and I figured it was not.
The accompanying error reports of a unsupported version being requested is
what started the bug alert/submission.

What probably aggravated the problem, and I've had it on 4 computers while
installing via net install was that it requests drivers for certain nic
cards or chipsets and requests you change the CD or insert a memory stick
with the proper drivers. However you can't open the CD drive to make that
change except with an emergency probe to force open the drive, which is
still spinning.

After many hours of fiddling with a memory stick I managed to get the
required drivers. However I don't think the installation program
identified them properly as the ports did not work, but there was no
indication of a successful operation.

It may help to:

1.) make sure that the disk is shutdown and open-able for the installer,
along with identifying a proper path for the firmware.
2.) report that the firmware did load, as best as you can.
3.) both of the Ethernet ports were shown as 'available' yet couldn't use
them and resorted to the wifi. This does seem questionable...

I hope I've assisted in making the install work better, just these few
items would be great. I hope my suggestions are reasonable, as I understand
software development, it isn't always so easy as it sounds!

The last two computers where an MSI motherboard and a Gigabyte motherboard,
that were home built PC type clones, the first was an Apple G5 and the
second was an HP laptop (which never would run Debian Linux.)

Thanks, if I can assist, please let me know!

Bug#721266: iceweasel: Website can 'lock' tab to stay, user has no control

2013-08-29 Thread Jack Wilborn
Package: iceweasel
Version: 17.0.8esr-1~deb7u1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
General browsing, a suggestion that I would have to pay to get my data
back. Locked the tab, so I couldn't close it. Kept coming back with Leave
Page, no matter what the response, it stayed open.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
Tried what I knew, but ended up killing the process. Only way to
recover.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
Lost all browsing information.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

I was hoping that I could just kill the tab! No such luck

Bug#704489: iceweasel ocasionaly freezes whole system, nothing reacts - power off only way to clear problem

2013-08-13 Thread Jack Wilborn
Package: iceweasel
Version: 17.0.8esr-1~deb7u1
Followup-For: Bug #704489

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
Boot system, click on Iceweasel, within a few seconds it will freeze
the entire system. It is not 100% freeze, sometimes it will run awhile, but
generally if I invoke Iceweasel by itself, it will freeze the system.
Clock on top of screen stops updating, best indicator it's hosed. But
not responsive to mouse clicks or keyboard entry. There is one other strange
thing that happens and I don't know if they are related, in that when typing
information into a web site, the font changes and I get a character,
followed by a space. This usually continues and I have to close Iceweasel to
continue. Don't know if there is a relation to the system freeze, but will add
this
to the bug list. I have also tried to find the 'expeirmental' version
to see if it's still a problem, but, even with the proper entry (I believe) in
sources.list, I don't seem to be able to find the expeirmental version with
'aptitude'
for installation.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
Found that I can only regain control by a power off, sit for a few
minutes then cause the BIOS to allow me to select boot device. If I just power
back on, I get a message on top of screen
that something happened and will return to where it was frozen.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
Proper re boot restores the computer.
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
Did not expect to have to wait after a power down.

Bug#695058: Monitor problem fixed thanks to Milan

2012-12-04 Thread Jack Wilborn
I received a response from Milan Kupcevic that the video card I had may
have separate display heads, which it does, and suggested that I place

image=/boot/vmlinux
label=Linux
read-only
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append=video=TV-1:d

or append the 'append' line from above in the yaboot.conf file and then run
ybin. It fixed the problem and I would to mention that Milan explained all
the required steps to me in order to make this change work. Keep in mind
that newbies may not know where the config file is, what editor is
available and what needs to be done after the file is changed (I.E. run
ybin) to complete the configuration. Don't assume anything!

I want to thank all for the help as I would have probably never figured
this out on my own although I am quite capable on computers in general.

Again, thanks to all and I hope the 'install' people make the necessary
changes to make this happen automatically.

Jack

Bug#695058: Linux installation bug

2012-12-03 Thread Jack Wilborn
Package: installation-reports

Boot method: Purchased a DVD or Debian 6.0.6 from linuxCollections.com
Image version: LC catalog #53628, don't know what else to put
Date: 12/03/2012

Machine: G5 Mac, 4 Gig Memory 250 Gig Hard Drive
Processor: PPC 9xx series
Memory:
Partitions: selected 'default suggested for new users'

Output of I don't know, doesn't ring a bell, will reinstall if
requested, also installed 'intall64'

Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot: [O]
Detect network card:[O]
Configure network: [O]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Install base system:[O]
Clock/timezone setup: [O]
User/password setup:[O]
Install tasks: [O]
Install boot loader:[O]
Overall install:[O]

Comments/Problems:
Installation seems to be ok, but when it re-boots, the display shows
output from the scripts. However towards the end, I'm assuming, the
display goes black and says NO SIGNAL. I did notice that it
output that it was 'setting the display to default' I believe. Also,
the Cinema display screen that I had is not connected but is replace
with a View Sonic VA720 (other is in storage in another state)
and is going through a 'dongle' that changes the output pins to that
that resemble a VGA display.

My questions: Can I invoke it to just give me a non gui interface via
some boot option?
This option would at least allow me to view what's happening and if
the boot actually completed properly.
I tried to download the 'netinst' image and it resulted in the same
problem. Although I could ^C out of the scripts and get to a partial
system, but many things seemed missing.
should I install another option, install expert64, etc? I was hoping
that the complete system would avoid this problem. Any suggestions
would be appreciated. Note that I can't get into the system to
run any commands or see any output. Is there any way to get 'error
out' or the displayed output to some device? like a printer or better
still a file that I can find?

Bug#695058: NO SIGNAL monitor problem..

2012-12-03 Thread Jack Wilborn
I forgot to add that I have an 'NVIDIA GeForce card. I wonder if the
change to a VGA display via a cable change is part of the problem. I also
wonder if there is some way to get control of the machine before it
completes the restart or boot. It responds to CTL-ALT-DEL keys and
reboots, but is there any other combination that will just give me control
in a command line?

Thanks

Jack
