It started to work on the desktop, too.

Please close the bug.

Unable to reproduce the problem on another computer (a notebook) running
practically identical system.

It happened also on another occasions that the programs on my desktop
behave erroneusly while on the notebook they work OK.

Any idea?

I installed the program on my notebook which in principle has the same
system version as the desktop, and there birdfont also works...

This is the output from the desktop:

LANG=C ls -l /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libwebkit2gtk-4.1.so*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 May 8 12:14
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libwebkit2gtk-4.1.so.0 -> libwebkit2gtk-4.1.so.0.13.5
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 76081696 May 8 12:14
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libwebkit2gtk-4.1.so.0.13.5

jsbien@JSBbookworm:~$ birdfont
birdfont: symbol lookup error: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libwebkit2gtk-4.0.so.37:
undefined symbol: gst_transcoder_get_sync_signal_adapter

Could the kernel be the culprit??? I avoid to reboot the system because
sometimes it fails for unknown reason (perhaps a hardware problem?). So on
the desktop the kernel is older than on the notebook, on which the
program works.

Bug#1061719: libqt6gui6:amd64: QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb doesn't seem to work

2024-01-28 Thread Janusz S . Bień
Package: libqt6gui6
Version: 6.4.2+dfsg-10
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: none, Janusz S. Bień
File: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt6/plugins/platforms/libqxcb.so

A program which works correctly on X is crippled on Wayland, one of the
panels is not opened. I was advised to use xcb, but it does not have any
effect.

More information at the thread:

https://forum.qt.io/topic/154144/debian-after-upgrading-the-system-the-program-became-unusable-how-to-approach-the-problem/13?_=1706499698799

BTW, when reporting this problem with Emacs debian-bug I got a strange
warning that libqt6gui6 is not installed although apt install reports
"libqt6gui6 is already the newest version (6.4.2+dfsg-10)." Quite
possible that my QT installation is somehow messed up (I use it only for
compiling two QT programs). qtchooser reports 7 versions: 4 5 default
qt4-x86_64-linux-gnu qt4 qt5-x86_64-linux-gnu qt5. QTCreator reports
5.15.8 twice: /usr/lib/qt5/bin/qmake and
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/bin/qmake.

I will appreciate your help

This is a QT program. I understand I should use

QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb

but this has no effect.

Should I install some library/package?

Today everything works! The installed system, the installer (#1059167)
and Debian Live (1059037). Earlier several attemps failed, it was not
just a single incident.

Should I suspect a hardware malfunction? Can you recommend some testing

I've upgraded AUCTeX to the current version and I'm unable now to
reproduce the problem. I'm still curious what information is encoded in

There is also a third option that the NAS is the culprit.

Bug#994125: rsync prohibitively slow? (was: rsync: rsync hangs (?) after upgrade to bullseye)

2021-09-13 Thread Janusz S . Bień

Hi!

Yesterday rsync finished after 3 hours. I had a lot of new large files
(virtual machines) and I have added numerous small files (so taking
longer than usual should be expected), and the reported speed was 1.94M
bytes/sec:

--8<---cut here---start->8---
2021/09/12 15:53:10 [8103] Number of files: 347,684 (reg: 306,343, dir: 24,017,

2021/09/12 15:53:10 [8103] Number of created files: 82,443 (reg: 58,416, dir:

2021/09/12 15:53:10 [8103] Total file size: 466.40G bytes
2021/09/12 15:53:10 [8103] Total transferred file size: 237.44G bytes

2021/09/12 15:53:10 [8103] total size is 466.40G speedup is 21.84
--8<---cut here---end--->8---

Unfortunately I deleted incidentally almost all earlier logs, but I'm
pretty sure the speed was usually much higher. In the logs left I see,
to my surprise, that sometimes the speed was even lower, e.g.

2021/06/02 12:58:26 [14079] sent 3.39M bytes received 137.16K bytes 190.76K
bytes/sec

but sometimes it was also quite high, e.g.

2021/06/03 15:31:14 [16281] sent 57.63G bytes received 149.27K bytes 50.98M
bytes/sec

The computer, the router and the QNAP NAS are in the same room. Some
time ago I tested the speed of computer-NAS connection. Unfortunately I
forgot what programs I used, I don't remember also the exact value but
it was satisfactory (100M bytes/sec?).

This is a one-liner split here by Emacs:
--8<---cut here---start->8---

--exclude-from=/home/jsbien/backups/home-exclude.txt --human-readable

--8<---cut here---end--->8---

Does it look reasonable? Do you want to see the whole log? There is
nothing confidential in it but I don't like to make it public.

However I noticed a new problem

I'm totally confused by it. rsync logs to NAS as an administrator.

All I want is just a usable backup :-) I will appreciate very much your
help.

I enclose the screenshot showing that the progress bar hasn't changed
during almost 14 minutes.

However ocrodjvu used to be maintaned by Python Applications Packaging

Dear Maintainer,

Please note in particular the upstream commit [e8cb9e] of 2021-06-09
"Added polish translation by Janusz S. Bień and Tomasz Świerczek".

Best regards

Janusz

P.S. This is the first time I report a bug from bullseye. Is the line
"X-Debbugs-Cc: none, Janusz S. Bień " correct? It
seems to me that earlier there was no "none".

There is the file

Calling explicitely djview4 does not solve the problem.

Dear Maintainer,

Because of make4ht prerequisits texlive-extra-utils should depend on
texlive-luatex which should contain make4ht-logging.lua but this is not
the case, at least in buster and bullseye.

Cf. https://github.com/michal-h21/make4ht/issues/47 for the upstream

Unfortunately there is no improvement.

Only the console output is displayed on the external monitor.

Actually I stopped using the laptop, during a quick test there was no
flickering, but it appeared usually after some time.

The monitor is OK because Windows uses it with no problem at the native
resolution.

Please note the problem seems specific to a particular model of laptop,
during a quick test with a desktop the problem doesn't occur even with
the default kernel.

Thank you very much for a constructive answer.

I have some earlier version of Debian on virtual machines and I see that
my hypothesis that the culprit is the recent upgrade was wrong. The
problem occurs already in a December version.

I will investigate first the console output for the chat site, there are some
messages which can give a hint.

When I click to select an item on the other site there is no console
output at all.

The chat is available only for the logged customer of the Internet
provider. FYI, it is Multimedia - does it really help? On the other hand
you can pretend to be a potential customer of
https://kucharekszesc.pl/pl/ (I'm afraid the site is available only in
Polish).

Anyway a clue should be provided by the fact the both (perhaps all?)
browsers are affected. The things broke several weeks ago, perhaps after
the upgrade to 10.8.

Bug#983523: general: some WWW sites no longer work neither in Firefox nor in Chrome

2021-02-25 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: general
Severity: normal

I was angry with my Internet provider because on their site since
several weeks the chat was reported as not available. It appeared the
chat works all the time in any Windows browser.

Today I tried to order some goods by Internet, by I was unable to select
the interesting items with a click neither in Firefox nor in
Chrome. Again it appeared that it works in any Windows browser.

Please reassign as appropriate.

Bug#980800: djview: No longer accepts a local DjVu document URL

2021-01-22 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: djview
Version: 3.5.27.1-10
Severity: important

The feature is essential for using and creating indexes like this:

https://github.com/jsbien/Zaborowski-index4djview

Used to work not long ago.

A sample message for an indirect call from djview4poliqarp::

djview: cannot open
'file:Zaborowski_MBC.djvu?djvuopts==388,950,128,52=1'.

And an example of an explicit invocation:

djview file:///Zaborowski_MBC.djvu?djvuopts==388,950,128,52=1
djview: cannot open 'file:///Zaborowski_MBC.djvu?djvuopts='.

Bug#977181: emacs: Private Unicode plains 15 and 16 not supported

2020-12-11 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: emacs
Version: 1:26.1+1-3.2+deb10u1
Severity: normal

As described in the upstream report

https://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=45184

I intend to use plains 15 and/or 16 for the historical variant of Polish
letters. An appropriate font is under preparation, but not yet
available publicty.

When the font was installed in ./local/share/fonts, a QT program found it
and displayed the characters correctly. Emacs, to the contrary, for

character: (displayed as ) (codepoint 983040, #o360, #xf)

reports "no font available".

the situation deteriorated:

1. I cannot use the external editor at all.

Bug#974645: gnome-remote-desktop: unable to connect

2020-11-13 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: gnome-remote-desktop
Version: 0.1.7-1
Severity: normal

Perhaps a stupid mistake of mine, but I'm unable to connect from the
buster on my desktop to the buster on my computer. I am unable to find
any advice on the Internet.

This bug report is sent from the laptop. In Settings sharing is On.

On the desktop I used almost all clients and protocols available. For
example, Remote Destop Viewer gives "Unable to connect to VNC server".

I guess some useful information is in logs, but which logs?

I'm quite anxious to solve the problem quickly because of the bug

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=974581.

I will appreciate your help.

Bug#974581: xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu: np longer able to set native resolution of Dell U3014

2020-11-12 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu
Version: 18.1.99+git20190207-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

For about half a year I had Dell UltraSharp 30" U3014 connected to my HP
15-rb063nw laptop as the primary display in the joint displays setting
and working at its native resolution 2560x1600 (60 Hz, at least I think
so).

Yesterday I made a test of working on the notebook alone by setting it
to single build-in display (without disconnecting the HDMI cable).

When trying to return to the previous setting, I found 2560x1600 is
available at 59.99 HZ (not on the drop down list!)m but when applied,
the Dell monitor goes blank and enters the power save mode.

I now work with the Dell set to 1920x1080 at 60 Hz with a strange
flickering (not the whole screen, rather a polygon is flashing at the
top, and not all the time, usually after a mouse movement).

The monitor is definitely OK, it behaves as expected with MS Windows and
another computer.

I will appreciate very much you help.

Best regards

Janusz

I think the extension is worth a separate package in Debian, but for
djview for a configuration file is needed (cf. the end of the issue
thread). I think it can be distributed with djview, but perhaps you will
ask the author of the extension for an advice?

djview4 was downloading 800 pages of the dictionary so quickly that the
server interpreted this as a DDOS attack.

wget has an option to delay downloading. Perhaps a similar option can be
added to "Save" panel? Do you think it makes sense to make such a
feature request upstream?

Bug#964506: djview4: memory leak - more data

2020-08-17 Thread Janusz S. Bień
After browsing the first 100 pages one by one with

djview4 https://djvu.szukajwslownikach.uw.edu.pl/linde-t/01/index.djvu;

'free' shows the increase of memory used from 220992 to 2973452, after
the next 100 pages to 3561568.

Can you reproduce this?

djview-plugin in bullseye recommends chromium - I'm curious why, because
the plugin doesn't seem to work with it, cf.

Looks like there are still some for which it is usable, unfortunately
the package does not recommend them.

Bug#962181: djview-plugin: Not recognized by browsers

2020-06-04 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: djview-plugin
Version: 4.11-1
Severity: important

According to Léon Bottou it should be recognized by epiphany-browser and
really does on Ubuntu 18.04:

https://sourceforge.net/p/djvu/bugs/319/#c805/b347

However it doesn't work for me on Debian (buster and byllseye):

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=962177

As the package recommends iceweasel, I tried it also but to no avail (I
understand it is now just Firefox).

On bullseye the package recommends chromium, but it also doesn't
recognize the plugin.

It appeared there are more problems with fwupd:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=953679

It actually doesn't start at boot:

Mar 12 07:47:25 debian systemd[1]: fwupd.service: Start operation timed

Can it be a systemd problem? Anyway, do you have any idea how to
diagnose it?

Even if fwupdf is not the real culprit, it definitely slows down the
attempted shutdown. Shiuld I do something about?

BTW, any idea why I cannot open VT 9? It is worth to be investigated?

It happened earlier that some text was displayed till I powered off
manually. I have no idea how to reproduce it now - something changed in
my system or am I doing something differently?

I had a quick look at

https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/5433

Should adding printk.devkmsg=on help somehow?

Many thanks for your quick answer.

So what I should do? Reassign the bug to the kernel? Can you do it for me?

Bug#942571: gparted: Unable to format as only "cleared" is available

2019-10-18 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: gparted
Version: 0.32.0-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I've just purchased Seagate Expansion 4TB (STEA4000400) which comes with
a NTFS partition. It is essential to me to reformat it into Ext4, but
the only option offered by gparted is "cleared", all others are greyed
out.

The FAQ (https://gparted.org/faq.php) entry "9: Why are some menu items
disabled?" is not relevant to my problem.

I was also unable to find with Google any description of a similar
situation.

I will appreciate very much your suggestions how to quickly solve or
circumvent the problem.

Best regards

Janusz

That's wrong, you cannot encode Polish in iso-8859-1.

That's true - I don't know why.

The validator at https://www.freeformatter.com/html-validator.html finds
6 issue, two of them relating to encoding.

Bug#927059: npm: npm npm does not support Node.js v10.15.2

2019-04-14 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: npm
Version: 5.8.0+ds6-4
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I set the severity to important because, although formally it is just a
warning, it is probably the culprit of my unability to install some of
the IIIF related software, cf. e.g

https://github.com/edsilv/biiif-workshop/issues/1

I'm aware of the bug #904422 "npm: complains about too-new nodejs" but
it is only "minor" and from the discussion is not clear for me how to
solve or circumvent my problem.

Best regards

Bug#926732: djview4: problems with URLs

2019-04-09 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: djview4
Version: 4.11-1
Severity: important

Dear maintainer,

I will report the bug also upstream, but want to provide the details of
my system.

The problems actually seem to be caused by a library, as they were
inherited by our December version of djview4poliqarp, although noticed
only just now.

The problems manifestation is that the page parameter doesn't seem to
work, e.g.

http://rcin.org.pl/Content/5994/KRIJP_20296_03030430_bdelion-bezksztalt.djvu?=88,1555,470,126=1
http://rcin.org.pl/Content/5994/KRIJP_20296_03030430_bdelion-bezksztalt.djvu?=88,1555,470,126=2
http://rcin.org.pl/Content/5994/KRIJP_20296_03030430_bdelion-bezksztalt.djvu?highlight=34,1529,361,137=3

display the same page.

Trying to prepare more test data I noticed that "Copy URL" almost always don't
work. I used to paste it with C-v, but now it yields nothing (the
underlying text is however still copied and can be pasted with the
middle mouse button). Once when it worked the URL was not correct as it
contained redundant elements.

I mark the bug as important as some of us plan to work intensively with
the DjVu URLs soon.

Best regards

Janusz

The silly typo was the culprit.

Fortunately I can live without MythTV by using a MS Windows program for
TV. Nevertheless I would like to solve my problem in some reasonable
future. I will come bacǩ to it probably in April, after some planned
hardware change.

I was already thinking about purging the package, but I would like to be sure
what is the risk. Is there a chance I will loose the database needed for
playing MythTV recording?

I've just reproduced the problem again.

but this instruction is confusing:

1. I don't see anything readable in /var/lib/mysql, ib_logfile0 seems to
me to be binary.

2. I don't have .my.cnf file at all.

3. I don't have /usr/sbin/mysqld.

4. I don't have /usr/sbin/mysql.

Moreover I don't think the process 23461 actually started.

Bug#922644: mariadb-server-10.3: Unable to reinstall

2019-02-18 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: mariadb-server-10.3
Version: 1:10.3.12-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

When I try to reinstall the package, I get

--8<---cut here---start->8---
Setting up mariadb-server-10.3 (1:10.3.12-2) ...
dpkg: error processing package mariadb-server-10.3 (--configure):
installed mariadb-server-10.3 package post-installation script subprocess
returned error exit status 7
--8<---cut here---end--->8---

I don't use the MySQL directly, I'm just a user of MythTV which depends
on MariaDB. The recent change of the Internet provider resulted in the
change of the IP of my home computer which hosts the server and MythTV
clients stopped working. Not long ago a superficially similar problem
was solved by reinstalling the package, so I wanted to try this again.

BTW, I'm unable to login directly to the database, but the reason may be
independent of the problem described above (last time I have done it was
several years ago when diagnosing a different problem with MythTV).

Best regards

Janusz

Bug#913951: tesseract-ocr: Legacy engine not directly usable because of missing files

I don't use Tesseract actively at the moment but subscribe to the
tesseract issues. I don't read them carefully but have an impression
that, at least at the very moment, Tesseract 4 traning data are not
necessary better then the legacy ones.

To say the truth, I'm aware of only one other person. He became confused
by the different paths to training data on Ubuntu and reported his
problem as an issue, which has been closed almost immediately;
unfortunately I'm unable to find quickly the issue numeber.

Bug#913951: tesseract-ocr: Legacy engine not directly usable because of missing files

2018-11-17 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: tesseract-ocr
Version: 4.0.0-1+b1
Severity: normal

Legacy engine provides some data which are not available LSTM, e.g. font
information, so it is not obsolete and a user should be able to use it
regularily. The data for the legacy engine are in different directory,
so there is no conflict. However the current package is configured
to see a conflict here, e.g.

Instead of just installing the missing package apt removed the legacy
version. The problem can be of course circumvented by an advance user
with TESSDATA_PREFIX, but this is a completely unnecessary complication.

Bug#906133: ocrodjvu: Please make Tesseract messages less confusing

2018-08-14 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: ocrodjvu

Hi!

I run ocrodjvu with "-j 3" and get the following messages:

I have no idea to which page Tesseract refers as " Page 1" and to which
pages " no best words!!" applies.

Is using "-j 1" the only solution?

BTW, I'm unable to find any explanation of the "no best words!!"
message. Use the force, read the source? :-)

Best regards

Bug#458206: no playback

2018-05-04 Thread Janusz S. Bień

I'm not sure this is the same bug, but at least it is similar.

I've decided to copy some cassettes using an USB deck, so I try to use
Audacity without any previous experience with the program and generally
with no experience in sound processing.

Unfortunately I have no sound on the playback independently of the
playback device chosen. I have 5 options:

HDA Intel HDMI: 0 (hw:0,3)
HDA Intel HDMI: 1 (hw:0,7)
HDA Intel PCH: AL270 Analog (hw:1,0)
HDA Intel PCH: AL270 Digital (hw:1,1)
hdmi
default

On the other hand the sound control panel shows:

HDMI / DisplayPort 2 - Build-in Audio
Digital Output (S/PDIF) - Built-in Audio
Speakers - Built-in Audio

For information, on the same computer on Windows 10 Audacity works
without problems, the playback choice are (in Polish):

Mapowanie dźwięku ... [Sound mapping?]
Głośniki (Realtek High ...) [build-in loudspeakers, this is ViVoPC)
Realtek Digital Output
BenQ... (my monitor on DP port)

There was definitely a period when it worked as expected, i.e. the
highlight was removed immediately and completely.

I've checked that the code introduced for this purpose is still present,
so there is a subtle bug in some other part of code.

Best regards

Bug#893771: djview: Clearing highlights no longer works

2018-03-21 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: djview
Version: 3.5.27.1-7
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

The feature added some time ago on my request

--8<---cut here---start->8---

commit c2036490129cd8481bc5527301572a90b26c79b6
Author: Leon Bottou
Date: Sat Mar 30 11:32:59 2013 -0400

added key H to clear highlights

--8<---cut here---end--->8---

no longer works.

I tried to use (for the first time in my life) git bisec on
https://github.com/barak/djview4.git to locate the responsible
commit. I've checked that the bug occurs already after the commit
b87081f0199e61b06b3d86dfc93eef3d28a63a8c (Sun Feb 1 13:07:26 2015
-0500). Unfortunately I was unable to compile the next commit selected
by bisec, and because of my only rudimentary knowledge of git I was
unable to proceed with the search of the commit to blame. I can continue
the search if you explain to me how to do it.

Best regards

That's correct. The change of layout was forced by a Django upgrade.

Bug#872303: linux-image-4.9.0-3-amd64: Regression: Technisat CableStar Combo HD CI no longer supported correctly) - more info

2017-08-16 Thread Janusz S. Bień
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.9.30-2+deb9u3
Severity: normal
File:
/lib/modules/4.9.0-3-amd64/kernel/drivers/media/usb/dvb-usb-v2/dvb_usb_v2.ko

I apologise for the previous incomplete bug report.

Some time ago on my old computer I was using succesfully Technisat
CableStar Combo HD CI:

https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/TechniSat_CableStar_Combo_HD_CI

with MythTV on Debian (for cable). I remember that both tuners were
available and I had to select the appropriate one during the MythTV
setup.

On a new computer for several reasons I used a different tuner just for
DVB-T. It recently broke down, so I decided at least temporarily use the
old Technisat for the terrestial broadcast.

To my surprise now only one tuner is available and after boot it is the
cable one. After a lot of experimenting I found that running

w_scan -ft -c PL -x

makes /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0 switch to the DVB-T tuner and MythTV
is usable till the next boot.

This is of course rather cumbersome.

Automatically included kernel log seems irrelevant to the problem (but
illustrate some other problems of mine...). The relevant fragments are
