Bug#1070449: linux-image-6.6-rockchip: zz-u-boot-menu postrm script no such file error

2024-05-05 Thread John Sullivan
Package: linux-image-6.6-rockchip
Version: 6.6.16+rockchip-1
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: jo...@debian.org

When trying to do an upgrade on the PineTab 2, I get "cannot open
/usr/share/u-boot-menu/read-config: No such file" when the postrm script
zz-u-boot-menu tries to run. This blocks upgrade of the package.

Bug#1043460: ncmpcpp: Lyric fetching from genius.com shows unrelated text

2023-08-11 Thread John Sullivan
Package: ncmpcpp
Version: 0.9.2-2+b3
Severity: normal

Searching in a browser on genius.com, I see that the lyrics for the song are
there.

But using L in ncmpcpp to select genius.com and then ` to force lyric fetching,
I get the attached screenshot, which shows some instructions for contributing
to genius.com instead of the expected lyrics.

This happens for any song I try.

Bug#1040404: gnome-calls: First call after boot blanks screen; can't access call controls

2023-07-05 Thread John Sullivan
Package: gnome-calls
Version: 44~alpha.1-1
Severity: normal

This is on a PinePhone, with the Phosh environment.

Consistently, after a fresh boot, when I make a call, the screen goes blank.
Hitting the lock button, which would normally un-blank the screen in some way
(either by bringing up the PIN unlock screen, or
by showing the active application), does nothing. Hitting the volume up/down
buttons does show the expected volume adjustment pop-up.

I can have the call as normal, but with the screen blank, I have no way to hang
up, or to navigate menus by pressing dialpad numbers. My only workaround so far
for ending the call is ssh'ing into the device
and killing gnome-calls.

Once the first call is complete, if I make a second call, it functions as
normal -- the screen does not go blank immediately. When it does go blank,
pressing the lock button brings up the call controls.

This is 100% reproducible for me by just doing:

1) Reboot the phone
2) Place a call to any number or contact
3) Screen will go blank irrecoverably until gnome-calls is killed or other side
ends call
4) After call, place another call
5) It works as expected, as do all subsequent calls, until the next boot

Bug#756802: bash script fails with commands without path to command

2014-08-01 Thread John Sullivan

Package: bash
Version: 4.3-7
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I have a script in /usr/local/sbin using /bin/bash to create directories
and files.

In this script, I'm using the touch, chown, and chmod commands. They all
fail with for example 'mkdir: No such file or directory'. All these
commands work in a terminal, however. The only fix for this problem is
to include the full path to the executable like /bin/touch, /bin/chmod,
and /bin/chown. I've echo the value of $PATH at the beginning of my
script, the value is
'/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin'.

Thank you

Bug#708971: Where in the package is this?

2014-01-13 Thread John Sullivan
I maintain planner-el, which depends on muse-el. I've been using Muse
for about 10 years, so I was very surprised to see it removed.

This bug says the README has invariant sections. There are two README
files in the muse-el package -- README.gz and README.Debian.

Neither README file has a separate license from the package, or any
indication of invariant sections or front or back cover texts, that I
can see.

The upstream muse.texi manual *does* have front and back cover texts,
and this is referenced in the README.gz file, but muse.texi is not
included in the Debian package.

Am I missing something? Or can we have this bug closed and muse-el added
back to testing?

Bug#644647: nethack-common.postinst creates record file in a way that doesn't work on some systems

2011-10-07 Thread John Sullivan
Package: nethack-common
Version: 3.4.3-12.2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

In nethack-common.postinst, you try to create an empty
/var/games/nethack/record text file by using /dev/null as a source for
/usr/bin/install. The result of this on my busybox armel system is
that the new file is created as a character special block device, not
an ascii file. This means that the scorefile is not updated by nethack
(yet, there is no error displayed to the user...).

I noticed this because it affects my maemo port of your package, but I
expect this is true on other busybox systems (or possibly armel?)
running regular Debian.

I've attached a suggested patch which seems to work on both my N900
and my amd64 sid system, creating the empty file with touch and then
setting the same mode and ownership you're using now.

Here is the strace that shows the file is a character special block
device.

The camera works fine in every other application I have tried,
 including Cheese and v4l2ucp.

It has worked with Ekiga in the past, but it has been at least a few
months since I used it last.

This means that the channel cannot be open. Have you tried putting 0
(or maybe 1 and 2) as channel in preferences *and restart ekiga*?

Channel 0 is the one that I didn't try -- I only tried 1 and up. 0 does
work, even without restarting.

 Oh good!

I think it's ready. At least I haven't had any problems using it
daily for NYT crosswords. I guess I'd say 1.1 for the version, but
I'm not entirely certain what the latest version is currently. I'd
say just bump the minor number and that should be fine.

Okay, I'm getting the package together now, but can you go through the
release motions, like putting an entry for the release in the Changelog
and tagging it as 1.1 in git?

Any chance you'll get to tagging the release soon?

Bug#596401: unblock: planner-el/3.42-3

3.42-3 fixes a FTBFS bug by removing a build dependency that does not
exist in squeeze. Instead of naming specific emacs version packages as
build dependencies, it just names the emacsen virtual package (which
it did before as one of the ORed list), since any of the providers of
 that package work.

How did you build test it? I suppose that the default sbuild dependency
resolving algorithm will fail horribly on this.

I tested building it inside pbuilder with each of the following:

emacs
emacs23
emacs23-lucid
emacs23-nox
xemacs21-mule
xemacs21-mule-canna-wnn
xemacs21-nomule

These are all the providers of the emacsen virtual package in squeeze. I
tested each provider individually in a fresh environment, as well as
with apt-get build-dep to make sure it could work without any provider
yet installed.

I see other emacs packages using ORed build-dependencies (muse-el,
remember-el) instead of or in addition to the virtual emacsen package,
but Lucas's bug suggested I shouldn't use ORed build-deps either. If
there's a better recommended way to state that any of the alternatives
will suffice for building, I'm happy to apply it.

My fix is essentially the same as what was done in remember-el to fix
the same bug (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=543126).

Bug#548327: xword: add an option to output the crossword as a postscript file

2010-09-08 Thread John Sullivan
Hi Derek,

I'm forwarding this bug to you from the Debian BTS. Please let us know
what you think, and keep the CC to 548327-forwar...@bugs.debian.org in
your reply. You can also view it at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=548327.

Package: xword
Version: 1.0-4
Severity: wishlist

xword's printed output is very nice, so it's useful to have a
command-line option to generate a postscript file from .puz
input. This means, for example, you can have a cron job that:

 - downloads a crossword
 - uses xword to generate a printable version
 - prints out the crossword so it's ready when you wake up :)

I've attached a patch to do this, but it's a patch on top of my
previous patch from bug #539756, since it needs the OptionParser
change.

many thanks,
mark

Bug#584380: python-gevent: FTBFS: AssertionError: u'ct.select'

thanks

I was also able to reproduce this in a clean sid chroot (and with
pbuilder).

The first attached one line patch allows it to build for me, and fixes
several other issues in the HTML documentation cross-references. The
version of python-sphinx in the archive (outside experimental) right now
is old, and isn't understanding the Sphinx inventory version 2 now
being used at http://docs.python.org/dev/objects.inv. So in addition to
the build failure, none of the cross references meant to point to
docs.python.org were working.

The patch switches the intersphinx mapping to
http://docs.python.org/objects.inv, which is still Sphinx inventory
version 1, which works with our version of python-sphinx. I don't see
any downside for python-gevent in pointing to the released docs instead
of the dev docs.

However, the build still fails if there is no internet access, which
doesn't seem good. In that case, it can't find the cross-reference
target in the Python docs, and so it looks in its own local code, which
fails because:

stripped_aliasname =3D i_aliasname[len(docname):]=20

does not return the expected result for the gevent.select.select section
of gevent.util.rst (and maybe for other sections/files as well), which
causes the subsequent assertion to fail.

I tried to fix the logic, but wasn't able to in a reasonable amount of
time. I suggest just removing the assert statement -- it does not make
sense that the entire build should fail just because some documentation
cross-references could not be completed accurately. Bugs can be filed
about the specific wrong/missing cross-references as they are
encountered. Missing references are definitely not RC bugs.

The second one-line patch removes the assertion, so the package builds
even with no internet connection, and I think this bug can be closed.

2010-03-30 Thread John Sullivan
Package: uzbl
Version: 0.0.0~git.20100314-1
Severity: normal

Using the default config file (which contains set download_handler =

downloads aren't working. No file is saved, and there is no error
message.

that. strace shows no attempt to open download.sh.

I've tried moving the download script into ~/.config/uzbl as well, but
it's still not being called. I tested this by putting other commands
into the script (like 'touch foo') -- and they were not executed.

Bug#561133: nethack-console: rules file includes x11-dependent actions for the console target

2009-12-14 Thread John Sullivan
Package: nethack-console
Version: 3.4.3-12
Severity: normal

I was porting your Debian package to Maemo 5, so it can run on the Nokia
N900. I was first trying to port the nethack-console interface, and not
build the others. So I removed all the targets from the rules file other
than console.

But around line 97 in the rules file, there is a block starting with
install -m 644 debian/x11/NetHack.ad that tries to run even when there
is no x11 target, causing an error. I succeeded in building the package
by commenting out this section, but I wonder if this should/can be
conditional based on the target?

(Ignore the system info; the n900 is armel and not vanilla Debian, but
that's not relevant for this bug.)

Bug#541216: xword: check puzzle / solve word not working

2009-08-12 Thread John Sullivan
Eric Cooper e...@cmu.edu writes:

 Package: xword
 Version: 1.0-4
 Severity: normal

After finishing a NY Times crossword puzzle, I quit, and re-loaded the
puzzle the next day when the version with an answer key was posted.
When I tried Check Puzzle, it showed *every* letter as incorrect,
and when I tried Solve Word a few times, it produced gibberish.

When you say re-loaded the puzzle -- did you open the original
version, or did you open the newly posted version with answer key?

It's a known issue that locked puzzles are not supported, and locked
puzzles give the symptoms you describe. See http://x-word.org/#bugs,
which says:

Sometimes a puzzle will be locked so that the answers are
unavailable. Unfortunately, Xword's support for locked puzzles is
somewhat flaky. When using a locked puzzle, you should not click on
the Check or Solve buttons, since they will give incorrect
information. However, you can still use Xword to enter answers for a
locked puzzle. Later, when an unlocked version of the puzzle is
released (usually the next day), open it using Xword. When asked,
choose to continue where you left off. Now you can use the Check
and Solve buttons to see how well you did.

So please try opening the version with the answers, and choosing to
continue where you left off.

If that's what you did do, then if you want to attach copies of the
puzzle (with and without answer key), we can try to debug.

Bug#539756: xword: add an option to try UTF-8 decoding before ISO-8859-1

2009-08-03 Thread John Sullivan
Hi Bill,

I'm passing along this bug and patch received against the Debian xword
package.

I'll do some testing of it myself and possibly add it to the Debian
package, but please let me know (keeping the CC to
539756-forwar...@bugs.debian.org) if you include it upstream.

Bug:

I can't find any specification of what the character encoding used in
the AcrossLite .PUZ format is supposed to be, but when generating
files to be used by xword it's nice to be able to use UTF-8. The
attached patch adds a command line option to try decoding strings in
the file as UTF-8 before falling back to the existing default,
ISO-8859-1. It also adds a usage message.

regards,
mark

Bug#537599: gnome-power-manager: Brightness incorrectly reported as 100% on Thinkpad X200T

2009-07-19 Thread John Sullivan
Package: gnome-power-manager
Version: 2.24.4-3
Severity: important

g-p-m says brightness is at 100% (both while on and off AC), but
the screen is obviously not at 100% brightness, judging by
comparison to before I installed g-p-m. I'd estimate it at no
more than 80% of the actual max. When I use the thinkpad
brightness keys, the pop-up also claims that brightness is
already at the max, as does the brightness applet. Adjusting
brightness down, though, works as expected. The ceiling is just
artificially low for some reason.

Bug#537599: gnome-power-manager: Better after reboot -- maybe related to hibernation?

2009-07-19 Thread John Sullivan
Package: gnome-power-manager
Version: 2.24.4-3
Severity: normal

My brightness came back to true 100% after rebooting on AC. I
wonder if the original problem was related to the fact that I
plugged the machine in while it was hibernating? It had been
running on battery when it was put into hibernation.

Bug#533133: linux-image-2.6.30-1-amd64: Also seeing this

2009-07-19 Thread John Sullivan
Package: linux-image-2.6.30-1-amd64
Version: 2.6.30-3
Severity: normal

I'm also seeing this problem. Here's the output I see in dmesg:

[48953.062556] IWLAGN :03:00.0: MICROCODE SW ERROR DETECTED.
RESTARTING 0X200.
[48953.103594] REGISTERED LED DEVICE: IWL-PHY0::RADIO
[48953.103643] REGISTERED LED DEVICE: IWL-PHY0::ASSOC
[48953.103687] REGISTERED LED DEVICE: IWL-PHY0::RX
[48953.103730] REGISTERED LED DEVICE: IWL-PHY0::TX

(Except not in all caps.) After that, I have no internet. Doing these
steps restores it:

ifconfig wlan0 down
iwconfig wlan0 rate auto ap any channel auto essid mine
ifconfig wlan0 up
dhclient wlan0

But sometimes it will happen again immediately. In those cases I
repeat the same steps but remove the module after bringing the
interface down, then reload it. Though I'm not sure that really
accomplishes anything.

I don't have it as bad as the original reporter -- I can often use the
connection for an hour or more with no problem. But it's guaranteed
that it will happen eventually.

Anecdotally it seems to be worse on 802.11n networks than it is on
802.11g.

It's an Intel 5300 card in a Thinkpad X200T.

I haven't used it with a kernel prior to 2.6.30 so I don't have that
point of comparison. I'm happy to help with any further information if
needed.

Bug#525780: Problem is incorrectly handling id3v2.3.0?

2009-05-06 Thread John Sullivan
I did some further debugging on this tonight, using another track that
showed the same problems.

(Pdb) id3.version
(2, 3, 0)

(Pdb) data
'\x00Bill Evans\x00\x00'

(Pdb) frame
TPE1(encoding=0, text=[u'Bill Evans', u''])

(Pdb) frame.pprint()
u'TPE1=Bill Evans / '

I think there's an issue with differences between 2.3 and 2.4 not being
handled.

http://www.id3.org/id3v2.3.0#head-05145d86196104464db40d63035e402ee3c504e7
says:

If the textstring is followed by a termination ($00 (00)) all the
following information should be ignored and not be displayed.

Since the id3.version is identified as 2.3, it should drop everything
after the first terminating null byte, instead of splitting it into a
list, which then leads to the pretty printer joining those parts with a
slash -- in violation of the spec.

At the moment I'm just doing this:

--- id3-orig.py 2009-05-05 22:52:55.0 -0400
+++ id3.py  2009-05-06 02:47:06.0 -0400

 raise ID3BadCompressedData, '%s: %r' % (err,
 data)
-
+data = data.rstrip(\x00)
 frame = cls()
 frame._rawdata = data
 frame._flags = tflags

which fixes my particular issue, but probably doesn't address the real
problem.

Bug#526725: xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion: Segfaults on Gdium (mips64) running mipsel

2009-05-02 Thread John Sullivan
Package: xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion
Version: 1:1.7.1-1
Severity: important

I have to use the fbdev driver in order to get the X server to start -- the
siliconmotion driver appears to segfault. I have also tried different NoAccel
and UseFBDev settings, but got the same result.

This is on a Gdium Liberty netbook.

I apologize for not knowing what package this problem relates to as it
seems to be a driver issue. At one time, I was able to listen to audio

Bug#511338: wifi-radar: Configuration file disappears after multiple uses

2009-01-09 Thread John Sullivan
Package: wifi-radar
Version: 1.9.9-1.1
Severity: important

Sorry this isn't very reproducible -- I'm working on figuring out a recipe, but
after a few successful uses, at some point the configuration file in /etc is
erased, and once it is erased, the program won't start.

everything (eep) runs as root.)

Bug#482992: Confirmation

2008-07-17 Thread John Sullivan
I was also seeing this in Iceweasel 3 (Version: 3.0~rc2-2) on lenny,
amd64, with the nv driver.

Adding:

Option XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps on

to the device section for my nVidia Corporation G70 [GeForce 7600 GS],
solved the problem for me as well.

No problem. If you are still able to reproduce it, could you test out a trunk
 build from here?

The trunk build did seem to fix the problem, thanks.

Bug#462019: Drop into login screen

2008-01-21 Thread John Sullivan

Package: gnome-screensaver
Version: 2.20.0-2
Severity: important

Whenever gnome-screensaver launches, I'm logged out, and the login
display screen appears. It also does this if I attempt to launch the
Screensaver Preferences. Any applications that are open and the data
not saved is lost. I've had to remove gnome-screensaver to prevent this
from happening.

Bug#364184: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: some FSF licences use old street addresses]

2006-04-26 Thread John Sullivan
Richard Stallman [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 Can you please fix these?

Looking at the bug report, I only see mention of the licenses that are
available on ftp.gnu.org.

However, the message from Dan says Checking the FSF website. I would
not call ftp.gnu.org an FSF website, so I'm a little confused.

I will make sure we update the addresses in
ftp.gnu.org/gnu/Licenses. If there are additional areas that need to
be updated, please give me more detail about where on the site they
are. The ones I spot checked on fsf.org had the correct address.

 From: Dan Jacobson [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: some FSF licences use old street addresses

Checking the FSF website, we see current versions of your licences
have different addresses: Franklin St., Mass Av., Temple Place.

We note that the FSF was going to fix this last year,
 but forgot:

Bug#313284: It's the loopback

2005-10-17 Thread John Sullivan

I just ran into this problem on my Debian Sarge system. The Courier imap server
would hang forever on SELECT INBOX and also on each EXPUNGE command, so that
it was taking several minutes for fetchmail to get and delete each message.

This system already had the libnss-db library installed.

But, I checked the output of ifconfig, and there was no IP assigned to the lo
interface.

ifconfig lo down
ifconfig lo up

did the trick. I don't know why this happened to the loopback, but correcting
it did fix the courier problem immediately.
