config FSCACHE_HISTOGRAM
bool "Gather latency information on local caching"
depends on FSCACHE && PROC_FS
help
  This option causes latency information to be gathered on local
  caching and exported through file:

/proc/fs/fscache/histogram

  The generation of this histogram adds a certain amount of overhead to
  execution as there are a number of points at which data is gathered,
  and on a multi-CPU system these may be on cachelines that keep
  bouncing between CPUs. On the other hand, the histogram may be
  useful for debugging purposes. Saying 'N' here is recommended.

  See Documentation/filesystems/caching/fscache.txt for more
information.

It is also disabled on fedora linux images.

Unless you come up with a real good reason to enable it,
this bug report can be closed.

but looking around I had a real trouble to find a box beside
my laptop with a PS/2 keyboard attached and it showed the following

 cat /sys/class/input/input*/device/description
 i8042 KBD port

 cat /sys/class/input/input*/device/driver/description

as I didn't want to continue my 1 hour search for an eventual PS/2 mouse,
and eventual combinations of the two.
I just applied your patch without the check to the branch timo/panic

This is a misunderstanding.
mkinitramfs shouldn't be affeced by /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d settings.
This dir is for stuff that may help on boot. It really lands into the
initramfs itself.

stupid naming of aboves dir agreed,
but what you are trying to do is deprecated.
a packaged mkinitramfs script may change values in
 /usr/share/initramfs-tools/conf-hooks.d/

I checked busybox source, it does support the verbose -v switch.
so changing your function in the patch, looks good.

now the only thing that is holding me up to merge your patch is that
/proc/bus/input/devices usage, there should be some sysfs file, no?

cat /sys/class/input/input*/device/description shows a KBD

It is listed, but only incorporated in rt2800usb_device_table[] if
RT2800USB_UNKNOWN is set:

#ifdef CONFIG_RT2800USB_UNKNOWN
/*
 * Unclear what kind of devices these are (they aren't supported by the
 * vendor linux driver).
 */
[...]
/* Linksys */
[...]
{ USB_DEVICE(0x1737, 0x0079), USB_DEVICE_DATA(&rt2800usb_ops) },

As mentioned by Jan, the device contains a RT3572 chipset. Its entry
could moved into the section for known RT35XX devices (i.e. "#ifdef
CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT35XX") as an alternative.

this needs a very good reason.

well it comes for cost of us, as building is longer and security support
is also different. If the module is built, one would expect such, well
for staging crap we don't anyway.

we do indeed enable staging crap on user request, so that we know that it
is used. we do consider however to split off the non mainstream modules
in a seperate modules to reduce size of the linux images and thus necessary
installations.

there is *no* point in posting trivial patches round and round.
if you'd build i-t with that branch and have it *well* tested
in several different configuration, then that would be a help.

currently this /run thingy seems like a useless mass_panic().

there are new ipconfig fixes in the upcoming 1.5.22 klibc git tree:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=libs/klibc/klibc.git;a=summary

Do you know how to cherry-pick certain patches and add them
to the debian package or do you prefer a snapshot deb to test them?
(currently a bit short of time but either is fine)

without debug build output of ipconfig that says nothing to me.

I will soon push out klibc 1.5.22 with it, once I have fixed
vorlon's arm patch to be upstreamable. as people are asking for the
fixed ipconfig.

Debian BTS is fine for patches or bug reports, otherwise you also just
send off to klibc mailinglist, both are looked and watched. The second
one is usually preferred as more people look at the klibc patches on ml.

it was an Ubuntu merge, as initramfs-tools initramfs were considered
stable, one could think to have this set for sid/testing until freeze.

the -ENOSPC error accounts for 50% of the Ubuntu bugs.
I do agree that it is not an initramfs-tools bug per se,
but of the invovled apt that do not cleanup a huge number
of linux-images that heppen due to their easy ABI bump.
Nevertheless due to the triggering the error happens very
late and kills the box.

you choose so on your Debian installation. on the why only you can respond (:
The expert install has a seemingly bad phrase so that many users seem to prefer
MODULES=dep, when that question is shown.

As you noticed the file is unowned and can be removed and the initramfs
regenerated.

Nevertheless your fail in MODULES=dep is interesting and didn't have time yet
to properly read this corresponding bug.

 I've fixed this in Ubuntu with the attached patch, but didn't find
 where to upstream it; since you're a klibc upstream developer and since
 it probably already affects Debian, I figured it was probably best to
 send it here  :-)

 BTW, do you have any idea why the build process forces such odd and
 very old toolchain flags instead of just using the defaults?
 (it forces -march=armv4 -mtune=strongarm)

Well we don't attempt, but we do load the module.

why not using "-v" from modprobe,
the only argument against that would count is busybox support.

There is a branch out there that gives up that symlink mess and runs
ldconfing on the built initramfs. I intent to upload it for 0.99.
It was prompted due to a similar long bug search #612633
http://git.debian.org/?p=kernel/initramfs-tools.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/maks/mkinitramfs_cp

currently a bit frustrated as the review of initramfs-tools branches
got stalled. (we'd only merge branches if other maintainer has reviewed
it). It paid of for squeeze as never had so less bug reports on a release,
but still currently too many branches and stuff pilling up, see bottom

Thanks a lot for the submisson, as mentioned running ldconfig is
considered better.

well KDE is so badly programmed that it doesn't work anywhere else
as on ext3 fs (google ext4 and kde for fun). better switch desktop

I didn't check how the patch applies to squeeze, but we do definitely
see high CPU usage by gnash in our labs' daily usage.
people get used to killall -9 gnash as a "fix".

The patch seems trivial enough as backport candidate.

double wrong, source package is linux-2.6,
severity important at best , also use reportbug and not reportbug-ng
it properly adds info:

Bug#612633: initramfs-tools: mkinitramfs creates non working initramfs

2011-02-27 Thread maximilian attems
hello,

added last week the branch maks/mkinitramfs_cp on top of the initial
fix runndinig ldconfig on the initramfs root:
http://git.debian.org/?p=kernel/initramfs-tools.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/maks/mkinitramfs_cp

a snapshot based on this patch is available:
http://charm.itp.tuwien.ac.at/~mattems/initramfs-tools_0.98.9~1.gbp5f06ec_all.deb
it's signature
http://charm.itp.tuwien.ac.at/~mattems/initramfs-tools_0.98.9~1.gbp5f06ec_all.deb.sha512sum.asc

could you test if that boots your setup out of the box?
(snapshot has minimal qemu + my own laptop testing)

thank you.

we have that mostly beside the nfs fixes for the next stable upload.

 make ARCH=i386 deb-pkg

cool, so now it would boot.

Thanks for your report, this means quite some work to resolve
that bug as ldconfig can't work against the symlinked tree
of initramfs-tools in ${DESTDIR}.

I see, and then we would need the ldconfig from inside the broken
initramfs, so you need

A) add ldconfig inside the initramfs
 echo "copy_exec /sbin/ldconfig /bin/" >>
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/busybox

B) generate the resulting initramfs
   (with the patched mkinitramfs adding /etc/ld.so.conf* to initramfs)

 mkinitramfs -o /tmp/foo.broken

C) unpack that initramfs

 mkdir /tmp/la && cd /tmp/la; zcat ../foo.broken | cpio -i

D) chroot into it

 chroot ./ /bin/sh

E) run ldconfig three times:
   (first invocation should tell that no cache around, second should
built it and we need output of third)
 ldconfig -p
 ldconfig
 ldconfig -p

thank you!

No it isn't. Send it attached and compressed, can't be that big.

Hehe, a late reply to the question if lvm did or does work.

what does on that box 'ldconfig -p' show?

good catch, fixed in git, but the ldconfig shouldn't be the game changer.

have been clearer from message 1.

homebrewn stuff and running full ldconfig on initramfs:

well, why does this end up in /usr/local, me gets confused, anyway
there are newer packages around afais:
 gcc-4.6 | 4.6-20110125-1 | experimental | source, amd64, armel, i386, ia64,
mips, s390

So it did work at some point? That is an info you didn't tell yet.
You can easily tell it to do backups in /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf
anyway why don't you keep another kernel around?
Running unstable one should be able to debug one own's box, that's the rule.
It is working well for thousands other, no idea yet what goes wrong here.

hmm right forgot to check 32 bit legacy, well there the line is similar,
but
libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xb7595000)

what is your cat /etc/ld.so.conf /etc/ld.so.conf.d/*.conf

well the question is why do you have a non working libgcc in /usr/local/lib ??

Nope, your report is still missing a lot, like
lsinitramfs /boot/path_to_broken_initramfs

and the output of
sh -x /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs -o /tmp/fooo

to backup the claims.

thank you.

most likely your box is broken, the lvm from Debian I am looking
at does certainly not depend on libgcc:
$ ldd /sbin/lvm
linux-vdso.so.1 =>  (0x7fff9d1ff000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x7fbcdaa77000)
libreadline.so.5 => /lib/libreadline.so.5 (0x7fbcda837000)
libdevmapper.so.1.02.1 => /lib/libdevmapper.so.1.02.1
(0x7fbcda614000)
libudev.so.0 => /lib/libudev.so.0 (0x7fbcda406000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x7fbcda0a5000)
/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x7fbcdac9d000)
libncurses.so.5 => /lib/libncurses.so.5 (0x7fbcd9e5e000)
libselinux.so.1 => /lib/libselinux.so.1 (0x7fbcd9c4)

You'd better check what you have localy compiled in /usr/local/lib
and see that it gets out of the way for ldd.

No libgcc also seen in any of the initramfs around.
Unless this bug report gets backed up with real data on why
mkinitramfs would be misbehaving here, this can be closed soon.

"Removing the security bugfixes", that doesn't sound like a good roead to go.

That is a wrong look at the problem, once it's upstream everybody profits.
So this looks more like a dead end road.

Hmm
Openvz was once scheduled to be merged mainline and back then people
were actively workin on it. We are dropping it as mainline has a very
interesting alternative.

Considering that SELinux is inside the kernel it be much better time
investment to polish that. What makes you think that a Debian Hardened
with proper SELinux wouldn't be really appreciated!?

I like the way you put it under brackets and think that
security is gained by just applying this patchset.

Be more precise in what SELinux can't do for you?
(Emulating NX for bad hardware doesn't count these days).

dude recheck your initramfs generated with aboves i-t version.
lsinitramfs comes handy for that. (;

well ok thanks for the effort, but please really do use git.
The klibc git repo is at
http://git.kernel.org/?p=libs/klibc/klibc.git;a=summary

git clone it and work away.

sorry but impossible to review as a patch in a patch,
please use format-patch.

same critique here, please work against git.

I don't take arch specific patches in Debian unless there
is no way around, so please repost the patches considering

Bug#611454: Dangling symlinks overwriting orte-checkpoint and orte-restart

2011-01-29 Thread maximilian attems
Package: openmpi-checkpoint
Version: 1.4.2-4
Severity: important

The commands are both self referential:
 lrwxrwxrwx 1 mattems mattems 15 Jan  7 15:04 ompi-checkpoint -> orte-checkpoint
 lrwxrwxrwx 1 mattems mattems 12 Jan  7 15:04 ompi-restart -> orte-restart
 lrwxrwxrwx 1 mattems mattems 15 Jan  7 15:04 orte-checkpoint -> ompi-checkpoint
 lrwxrwxrwx 1 mattems mattems 12 Jan  7 15:04 orte-restart -> ompi-restart

At a quick look debian/openmpi-checkpoint.links is wrong.

thanks

"initramfs-tools: Handle hidden dependency of libcrc32c on crc32c"
landed in unstable and is scheduled for squeeze, any progress from
your part nuking that file?
