Bug#1050575: gnome randomly ignoring my keybinding settings

2023-08-26 Thread Michael P. Soulier
Package: gnome
Version: 1:43+1
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: msoul...@digitaltorque.ca

Dear Maintainer,

I set my keybindings to change workspaces on Super+1 to 4, for each of the 4
workspaces. Suddenly when I login, Super+3 opens the damned calendar instead.
But that's on a default X session. If I login with Wayland, suddenly 1-3 work
but Super+4 opens my browser.

None of this shows up in the settings.

The quality of Gnome, which was already buggy, seems much lower in Debian 12.

2023-08-26 Thread Michael P. Soulier
Package: xfsprogs
Version: 6.1.0-1

Dear Maintainer,

I was trying to format a 4TB usb external drive. Every time I tried, I saw I/O
errors and my gnome desktop froze, requiring a complete power-cycle to recover.

I finally used ext4 with no problems. Could be hardware but the enclusure and
drive are both brand new, and I don't know why one would succeed and the other
fail.

Some dmesg output:

I found that it did not work for me. I had to grab the latest quicklisp from the

2023-05-03 Thread Michael P. Soulier
Package: cl-quicklisp
Version: 20150128-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
X-Debbugs-Cc: msoul...@digitaltorque.ca

Dear Maintainer,

I followed the instructions in the README

msoulier@cortado:~$ sbcl --script /usr/share/common-
lisp/source/quicklisp/quicklisp.lisp

   quicklisp quickstart 2015-01-28 loaded

To continue with installation, evaluate: (quicklisp-quickstart:install)

For installation options, evaluate: (quicklisp-quickstart:help)

So I loaded sbcl and ran the command:

* (quicklisp-quickstart:install)

debugger invoked on a SB-INT:SIMPLE-READER-PACKAGE-ERROR in thread
#:
  Package QUICKLISP-QUICKSTART does not exist.

So the installation did not make the library available, and it cannot be used.

Package: brave-browser
Version: 1.22.71

Justification: causes non-serious data loss

Dear Maintainer,

I have noticed since my latest upgrade that brave-browser is randomly crashing
when it seemed quite solid before. I have maybe 20 random tabs open, sometimes
multiple to youtube and one to a video conference site.

When it comes back up it offers to restore pages, and I try to pick up where it
left off.

Bug#861424: cmus: will not start up on fresh install

2017-04-28 Thread Michael P. Soulier
Package: cmus
Version: 2.5.0-7+b1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

On a fresh install of cmus, it will not start. I get no display in my terminal
of the ncurses UI. I had to do
this to get it to come up.

echo 'set output_plugin=pulse' > .cmus/autosave

Afterwards, while I can now add songs via the :add command, the UI is
unresponsive, although cmus-remote is able
to make the program play.

I am on Debian Jessie in the i3 window manager, with pulseaudio for sound.

Bug#858368: iptables-dev: The libipq manpage says to load the ip_queue module, which is no longer possible.

2017-03-21 Thread Michael P. Soulier
Package: iptables-dev
Version: 1.4.21-2+b1
Severity: minor

Dear Maintainer,

The libipq manpage lists instructions that are no longer possible, as the
entire libipq API is now deprecated. Specifically it instructs the reader to
load the ip_queue module, which is no longer available.

Likely, it should point out the deprecated nature of the package, directing
readers to libnetfilter_queue.

Bug#769981: reprepro complaining about 'all' architecture

2014-11-17 Thread Michael P. Soulier
Package: reprepro
Version: 4.12.5-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 5.6.8

Dear Maintainer,

I tried to include a package in my existing custom apt repository, and now all
it does is complain about the 'all' architecture, which is apparently a valid
architecture.

https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-controlfields.html#s-f-Architecture

bear:/var/www/apt# reprepro list wheezy
Error: Distribution wheezy contains an architecture called 'all'.
There have been errors!

So now I cannot update my repository. This worked previously, and I do not
understand the nature of the complaint. It is not providing sufficient detail,
and my inquiries on the debian-user list go unanswered. I am not sure how to
proceed.

Bug#769429: xfce4-settings: Ctrl-Alt-t to open terminal does not work

2014-11-13 Thread Michael P. Soulier
Package: xfce4-settings
Version: 4.8.3-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I tried to set Ctrl-Alt-t to open a terminal via the keyboard shortcuts menu.
It captured Primary-Alt-t, which I bound to xfce4-terminal. Using the full path
to the binary or not, the keystroke does nothing. I tried Super-t...nothing.
The keybinding actually disappeared from the menu and I had to re-enter it.

This doesn't seem to work very well.

Bug#769438: icewm: Uncommenting default prefs makes taskbar clock flash

2014-11-13 Thread Michael P. Soulier
Package: icewm
Version: 1.3.7-4
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I copied /usr/share/icewm/* to $HOME/.icewm and started customizing. For the
taskbar clock I kept the default options, simply uncommenting them.

TimeFormat=%X
TimeFormatAlt=
DateFormat=%c

This options resulted in a flashing taskbar clock. Commenting them out again
fixed the problem.

I should not expect a flashing clock, ever. Why uncommenting default options
caused it is beyond me.

crammed onto the right one, and I have to drag them all back again

- furthermore, there is no power option to tell gnome to not put the monitors

Bug#654973: xorg: screen lock on thinkpad t30 when laptop lid closed

2012-01-07 Thread Michael P. Soulier
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.5+8+squeeze1
Severity: normal

On my thinkpad t30, after installing Debian Squeeze, I configured the power
management to only blank the screen when the lid is closed. For some unknown
reason there is no do nothing option.

When the lid is closed and reopened, the screen displays random garbage and
does not recover. A reboot fixes it.

I have had various earlier Ubuntu releases on this laptop without such issues,
so perhaps the problem is a newer version of xorg or the kernel.

Bug#652008: gnome-terminal: lock up after medium period with much output

2011-12-13 Thread Michael P. Soulier
Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 2.30.2-1
Severity: important

I have repeatedly tried to run a unit test suite in a gnome-terminal, which
produces a great deal of output to the terminal in a short period of time. On a
fairly frequent basis, gnome-terminal inexplicably hangs during this output.

Rerunning the suite in an xterm works perfectly.

Bug#648509: gnome: unable to rename desktop shortcut

2011-11-12 Thread Michael P. Soulier
Package: gnome
Version: 1:2.30+7
Severity: normal

I ran a Java webstart app that created a shortcut in my Desktop directory
called

jws_app_shortcut_1321101478035.desktop

I tried to rename it on the desktop, and every time I tried it reverted to the
original name. No error message, nothing. I tried in the rename menu, in
properties, all with the same useless result.

jws_app_shortcut_1321101478035.desktop

I'm now using the shell to rename it, which works fine.

Bug#617289: [Pkg-alsa-devel] Bug#617289: alsa-utils: alsa fails to recognize EMU10K1X - no sound

2011-04-07 Thread Michael P. Soulier
On 08/03/11 Elimar Riesebieter said:

  msoulier@tigercub:~$ sudo alsactl init

 Are you running ubuntu stuff?

No, sudo is standard on Linux systems and its use is encouraged.

 Please post the output of:

 $ cat /proc/asound/cards
 $ lsmod  grep snd

This turned out to be a hardware problem, so nothing to do here.

Bug#617289: alsa-utils: alsa fails to recognize EMU10K1X - no sound

2011-03-07 Thread Michael P. Soulier
Package: alsa-utils
Version: 1.0.23-3
Severity: normal

After upgrade from Lenny, I have no sound.

Running alsactl init I get this:

msoulier@tigercub:~$ sudo alsactl init
Unknown hardware: EMU10K1X SigmaTel STAC9708,11 AC97a:83847608 0x1102

Hardware is initialized using a guess method

Output of lspci -v for this sound card, which is a Dell variant on the
soundblaster:

Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 18

Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2
Kernel driver in use: EMU10K1X

As this worked before, I expect it to continue working. I have checked
speakers, mixer settings, etc.

Actually I think GDM is the problem. I installed XDM and I didn't see the

On nearly every first boot of this Dell Dimension 2400 PC running Lenny, when
X starts up the screen simply goes blank and the computer is unresponsive. I
have to reboot the computer for it to finally come up and permit a login.
