The /etc/init.d/*.init files need to be modified, if I recall right the
if-*{up,down}.d scripts too, there is some subtle changes needed to
implement the method Ubuntu uses.

Ubuntu has pretty good Openstack implementation, how Open vSwitch is
basically fired up is if a network interface is onlined before OVS
starts, OVS is started. OVS is started after the networking service.

The openvswitch-switch.service file prevents the running on
/etc/init.d/openvswitch-switch during startup.

One of the challenges here is when OVS is started up, it may create
network devices, which triggers ifup ... if this happens during the
start of networking you have a problem, it is also a problem because the
ifup script tries to start the service if its not running. Under stretch
this collides horribly causing a very very long startup delay, OVS
starts starting, brings up a network device, ifup is run, which in turn
tries to start OVS while its already starting.

This is the reason why SYSTEMCTL_SKIP_REDIRECT is used.

There is also the other Open vSwitch services, and quite a few of them
depending on what you're doing. For instance on a controller,
ovsdb-server is started 3 times, once for SB, once for NB and once for
vswitchd to manage each of the databases.

Bug#883362: ifupdown: Using "description xxx" prevents bridge interface creation/configuration

2017-12-02 Thread Nigel Kukard
Package: ifupdown
Version: 0.8.19
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where
appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

Adding a description to a bridge interface.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Bridge interface failed to be created.

# ifup br1
Cannot find device "br1"
ifup: ignoring unknown interface br1=br1

This is a pretty critical bug as it can prevent access to a system with
a bridged network interface.

Do you have a configuration comparable to Torstens? If so it's possible,
I'd be happy about any tests with this patch since I still did not get
 around to do some investigation.

Is there a reason why this was not committed upstream? it looks like the
patch was not submitted as required in the review, should the correct
course of action not be to resubmit it upstream, and if its included we
can include it in the Debian package?

Excellent! Did you manage to publish some work, e.g. in some git repo
 somewhere?

FWIW, I found out v2.0.14 was released upstream on 2013-10-26. Furthermore,
Bug #735120 (non-free w3c icons) is fixed upstream in
 https://gitlab.devlabs.linuxassist.net/policyd/policyd/commit/925edf8630b83e3f474e47490369b830829a16b6,
 at around 2014-05.

So it should not be that hard to get postfix-cluebringer back in Debian...

I've not had a terrible amount of time since then to work on the
package. I have discussed the path I want to take with Eriberto and
Tobias, but after spending a few days on it, I realized it will take a
few more. Since then I've gotten a few other packages into Debian, but
I've just been a bit busy with DC15 and DC16 this year.

What I need to do is fix upstream a bit more, then rename the package.
But at the same time fixing naming upstream to be in line with this.

If you have any suggestions or want to discuss, just let me know :)

Bug#761074: RFS: cputool/0.0.7-1 [ITP]

2014-09-11 Thread Nigel Kukard

Hi there Tobias,

I'd just like to thank you again for the time you've taken below and
pointing me in the right direction, its very much appreciated.

Nothing but perfection is really not good enough ;), I've made a note on
each item and will include it in my own checks in future.

Could you clarify this for me Tobias, I must be missing something, I
copied an example that Eriberto gave me here...

http://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs/main/s/sentinella/unstable_copyright

The format is specified in
https://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/1.0/#copyright-field
The file format gives you many freedoms, so you format actually not
really wrong, but for the symmetry the , was somehow disturbing my
eyes as a comma indicates somehow there is something to follow. As
said, its a nitpick.

Excellent! I see what you mean, its the ,'s behind the dates.

I've removed them, it does look a bit easier on the eyes.

Thanks for pointing this out!

- d/control
   - I'd prefer only to override when necessary. In this case, please
remove the file using d/clean.
   - please use dh_autoreconf

Sorted. I now have this, I hope its what you were referring to...
***
$ cat rules
#!/usr/bin/make -f

%:
  dh $@ --with autoreconf

***

Yes, perfect. (you've also added a B-D on dh_autoreconf, haven't you?)

Excellent, thanks Tobias.

I've made the relevant changes, I hope you find them satisfactory and
feel free to note any other improvements I can make to improve quality :)

Bug#761207: ITP: awit-dbackup -- Flexible one archive per directory backup tool

2014-09-11 Thread Nigel Kukard
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Nigel Kukard nkuk...@lbsd.net

* Package name: awit-dbackup
  Version : 0.0.22
Upstream Author : Nigel Kukard nkuk...@lbsd.net
* URL : http://www.dbackup.org
* License : GPL-3+
  Programming Lang: Perl
Description : Flexible one archive per directory backup tool

This is a backup software package which basically creates one
archive per directory it backs up. This makes searching
through the backup much easier as you can look for which files
you're after in the directory hierarchy. It will only backup
directories which have changed, which makes it rsync friendly.

 - why is this package useful/relevant?

This package is extremely useful in backing up very large datasets or
virtual containers.

It creates one archive per directory being backed up using a number of
compression options.

Should contents change, and those contents are isolated to something like
new files being added, it will not touch the previous archive. This makes
it very efficient and rsync friendly.

As there is one archive per directory being backed up, you can easily browse
through the backup set and choose what you want to restore.

  - do you use it?

Extensively when backing up virtual containers and large filservers.

  - if there are other packages providing similar functionality, how does
it compare?

I do not believe there is a tool which offers this flexibility. Its got
quite a unique purpose.

  - how do you plan to maintain it? inside a packaging team
(check list at https://wiki.debian.org/Teams)? are you
   looking for co-maintainers?

I have multiple paid staff who are employed to maintain the software package
and for whom I will accept MR's for.

I will handle the packaging myself and uploading for the sponsor.

Bug#761065: ITP: cputool -- Utility which manages CPU usage and system load

2014-09-10 Thread Nigel Kukard
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Nigel Kukard nkuk...@lbsd.net

* Package name: cputool
  Version : 0.0.7
Upstream Author : Nigel Kukard nkuk...@lbsd.net
* URL : https://gitlab.devlabs.linuxassist.net/cputool/cputool
* License : GPL-3+
  Programming Lang: C
Description : Utility which manages CPU usage and system load

CPUTool allows the limiting of cpu usage of a process or a process group to a
given limit and allows the suspensions of process execution if the system
load exceeds a defined treshold.

 - why is this package useful/relevant? is it a dependency for another
   package?

This package is very useful for running backups from, or any operation which is
disk IO intensive. It pauses the process and waits for system load to drop,
when it has dropped it is resumed. This can occur multiple times per second.

It can also be used to give processes slices of CPU time to use. This is useful
when you want a program to only use a specific amount of CPU time.

Combined with the above, it can limit heavy CPU and IO operations by giving out
only a percentage of CPU time and pausing the process should the threshold be
exceeded.

Another sneaky thing you can do is run PHP in FCGI mode under cputool to limit
CPU usage.

 - do you use it? if there are other packages
providing similar functionality, how does it compare?

I do use this utility on a large number of systems when doing backups or heavy
IO or CPU intensive operations.

and - Auto Nice Daemon
schedtool - Queries/alters process' scheduling policy and CPU affinity
cpulimit - tool for limiting the CPU usage of a process

CPUTool is different that it allows the limiting of CPU time to process groups
in addition to single processes. It also monitors load and pauses the process
should this exceed the specified threshold.

I got the idea for CPUTool from certain commercial vendors who while providing
the source code to similar tools had no intention on me assisting them on
improving them. I then wrote CPUTool which is its entirely own implementation
and only borrows ideas from other projects.

 - how do you plan to maintain it? inside a packaging team
(check list at https://wiki.debian.org/Teams)? are you
   looking for co-maintainers?

CPUTool is different that it allows the limiting of CPU time to process groups
in addition to single processes. It also monitors load and pauses the process
should this exceed the specified threshold.

How it is better from what provides cgroups kernel feature, configured through
sysfs or userspace tool ?

cgmanager - Central cgroup manager daemon
cgroup-tools - control and monitor control groups (tools)

I would'nt say its better, its suited to a different use case.

* It can pause a process based on load, cgroups cannot do this
(something the proprietary tool cpuwatch does)

* It runs anywhere that it can access /proc/$pid of the process its
operating on and has no other requirements apart from this (similar to
the cpulimit tool already in Debian, except cputool operates on process
groups and also supports load monitoring, it also has an optimized
design allowing it to operate on thousands of processes)

Hi Nigel,

The quality of the package is very good;

Thanks guys :), I will further make a note of the below and make sure I
keep them in mind for next time.

Thanks for your input Tobias, I really appreciate the time you've taken
to point out the below.

I just saw a few nitpicks which I'd ask you fix before I upload it:

- d/copyright
  - please join the lines AllWorldIT and your contact (as it does not
describe a new copyright)
  - mind to add a Upstream-Contact Header?

If I add the upstream contact, would you still like the contact on the
copyright line? The reason I added it was to show the upstream contact.

  - Comment (line 3) is not needed, please remove it (its in d/control)

Removed.

  - there are extra ,s after the years in line 8 and 12

Could you clarify this for me Tobias, I must be missing something, I
copied an example that Eriberto gave me here...

http://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs/main/s/sentinella/unstable_copyright

  - has a final blank line

Removed.

- d/control
  - I'd prefer only to override when necessary. In this case, please
remove the file using d/clean.
  - please use dh_autoreconf

Sorted. I now have this, I hope its what you were referring to...
***
$ cat rules
#!/usr/bin/make -f

Thanks again for your time!

Bug#751009: RFS: ppp-gatekeeper/0.1.0-201406111015-1 [ITP]

2014-09-08 Thread Nigel Kukard

Hi there Eriberto,

On 09/07/2014 09:50 PM, Eriberto wrote:

Your package appears good. We need some last changes to upload it.

2014-09-07 12:36 GMT-03:00 Nigel Kukard nkuk...@lbsd.net:

Hi there Eriberto,

No problem at all, I really do appreciate your time :)

Oh, thanks! I saw your work, applying the corrections pointed by all
people. So, I will try to help you to finish this package.

I thank you again for your valuable input and time Eriberto.

My new observations:

1. d/control: remove the name 'PPP Gatekeeper' from short description
because when anyone execute an 'apt-cache search', the package name
will be showed. Do an '$ apt-cache search a' and you will see that the
packages names aren't showed in short descriptions.

I have rectified this, thank you for pointing this out.

I'm looking at d-policy #3.4 #5.6.13 but I can't find what the length
limit is. I kept the entire line to under 80 to be sure.

2. d/copyright:
 - About your question, yes, you need split to 'Files: *' and
'Files: debian/*'. The Nigel upstream and Nigel packager can do
different works. Imagine you have your upstream program as 2001-2013
and a package did in 2005. However, you need fix some issues in
packaging. So, you will have an upstream code 2001-2013 and a
packaging 2005-2014 (in other words, your program isn't copyrighted
2014). You can see two examples here[1][2].

[1]
http://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs/main/v/volatility-profiles/unstable_copyright
[2]
http://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs/main/p/phpwebcounter-extra/unstable_copyright

 - Other issue is that ppp-gatekeeper file says: Copyright (C)
2008-2014, Linux Based Systems Design. Your d/copyright say:
Copyright (C) 2010-2014,

Thankyou for pointing this out. I have rectified this mistake and added
a note to my own checklist. :)

I have two questions to ask clarification on:

1. If there were 100 files, each file having a different date range in
the copyright line, would I need to list each and every one?
For instance, say a package is the combination of a few other projects,
its quite possible that some may list 2014, some 2009-2014, some
2004-2005 for instance.

2. My second question is if there are say 5 people listed in the files
copyright line, how would these be properly listed? would the first one
appear on the copyright line in d-control and the rest below it indented
1 space from the left?

Linux Based Systems Design. Note that here
we have another issue: the upstream is Linux Based Systems Design and
the packager is Nigel Kukard. They aren't the same person. So, we
have:

Files: *
Copyright: 2008-2014 Linux Based Systems Design
License: GPL-3+

Files: debian/*
Copyright: 2014 Nigel Kukard nkuk...@lbsd.net
License: GPL-3+

I always like to put a contact for upstream. So, I suggest it
(implement if you like this):

Files: *
Copyright: 2008-2014 Linux Based Systems Design,
 by Nigel Kukard nkuk...@lbsd.net
License: GPL-3+

You can see an example here[3].

[3]
http://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs/main/c/core-network/unstable_copyright

Thankyou very much for this. You raise perfectly valid points which I
missed and I fully understand now.

I've also gone through the above links you pasted.

As I may not be the only person that authored the files, I changed by
to contact, I hope this is acceptable.

3. ppp-gatekeeper.README.Debian: you wrote Shorewall is a recommended
package. Change from recommended to suggested.

Thankyou for this, I will ensure I don't make this mistake again in future.

4. As curiosity, why you says 'Source:
https://gitlab.devlabs.linuxassist.net/ppp-gatekeeper/ppp-gatekeeper'
in d/copyright but uses
'http://download.allworldit.org/ppp-gatekeeper' in d/watch?

The first link is the revision control site used for the project, The
copyright URL points to the revision control site as it is the most up
to date.

The package was downloaded from the second link you mentioned. While the
first site offers limited downloading, it lacks hashes and also doesn't
support signatures. On the second site the sources are hashed and
signed. It also lists all versions nicely and in a nice order. This
download link is also listed in the wiki on the project site.

I can change the URL in the copyright file, I just thought it best to
point to the revision control URL as this is most up to date.

5. You have a Lintian message to fix: 'P: ppp-gatekeeper:
maintainer-script-without-set-e postrm'.[4]

[4] https://lintian.debian.org/tags/maintainer-script-without-set-e.html

I did have /bin/sh -e , but I have now rectified this to explicitly
use set -e :)

I need your last effort to be all right. :-)

I've been over all mails twice, and I am hoping very much that this time
all is good.

I've re-uploaded the latest revision.

**

I modified this according to the reply in
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=751009#56

Could you please clarify how this is incorrect so i can fix it?

2. d/copyright:
 - You need to add the section 'Files: debian/*' because you can
wish make a Debian revision without an upstream revision.

Could you please clarify this. Upstream (me) already has a debian/
directory, would these files not fall under the Files: * section
currently in d/copyright?

Do you want me to put the following section in regardless of the above?
*
Files: debian/*
Copyright: 2014 Nigel Kukard
License: GPL-3+
*

 - The information in d/copyright is different from upstream code.
There is a license file saying GPL-2. However, ppp-gatekeeper file
says 2008-2014 GPL-3+.

The file ppp-gatekeeper correctly states GPL-3+ , the d-copyright file
correctly states GPL-3+, the upstream LICENSE file also states GPL-3+.

Could you please clarify which file you are referring to?

3. d/ppp-gatekeeper.dirs: remove etc/modprobe.d because
d/ppp-gatekeeper.install will create it.

I'll sort this out, thanks for pointing it out.

4. d/ppp-gatekeeper.install: you are installing a file inside
/etc/shorewall. However, shorewall is a suggestion, not a dependency.
So, you must put contrib/start.shorewall in
usr/share/docs/ppp-gatekeeper/examples and write a d/README.Debian to
explain about how to use this file.

I'll sort this out, thanks for pointing it out.

5. d/rules:
 - override_dh_installdocs: don't install AUTHORS as docs. This
information should be provided by d/copyright. I suggest to use
d/ppp-gatekeeper.docs ($ man dh_installdocs).

I already removed this from my last upload, as indicated by
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=751009#56 as it does
not contain any useful information for a user.

 - override_dh_clean: I suggest to use d/clean ($ man dh_clean).

Already fixed in the latest upload as indicated in
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=751009#56

 - You are creating/deleting a manpage.1 but the correct level is 8.

I have corrected this, thank you very much for pointing it out.

6. You have Lintian messages to solve:

W: ppp-gatekeeper: new-package-should-close-itp-bug

Already fixed as per above.

E: ppp-gatekeeper: description-is-pkg-name PPP Gatekeeper

Already fixed in latest upload, mentors lintian no longer shows this
message.

I: ppp-gatekeeper: extended-description-is-probably-too-short

I already expanded the description. I'm not seeing this message on local
or mentors, could you indicate where you are seeing it?

Bug#758696: ITP: ppp-gatekeeper -- PPP Gatekeeper manages and load balances main, redundant and failover PPP connections

2014-08-20 Thread Nigel Kukard
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Nigel Kukard nkuk...@lbsd.net

* Package name: ppp-gatekeeper
  Version : 0.1.0-201406111015
Upstream Author : Nigel Kukard nkuk...@lbsd.net
* URL :
http://gitlab.devlabs.linuxassist.net/ppp-gatekeeper/ppp-gatekeeper
* License : GPLv3+
  Programming Lang: Perl
Description : PPP Gatekeeper manages and load balances main, redundant
and failover PPP connections

PPP Gatekeeper is a daemon that manages PPPOE connections supporting
various levels of redundancy and failover.
 .
Traffic can be routed using round-robin and random strategies over links
of similar priority. Static IP route lists can also be provided for specific
routing purposes. DNS can also be load balanced over multiple links.

 - why is this package useful/relevant?

This package is useful because it allows one to configure multiple PPP
connections and actively load balance default/static routing and DNS
over these links. It also allows failover connections to be established
which will then receive the relevant routing table(s) when the main link(s)
go down. It is extremely useful for those who have multiple DSL lines or
which want to use something like 3G or other methods as a backup should
 the main link go down.

 - how do you plan to maintain it?

I am the upstream and plan to maintain it using a separate git project
 on our gitlab system. https://gitlab.devlabs.linuxassist.net

I have multiple paid staff who are employed to maintain the software
package and for whom I will accept MR's for.

I will handle the packaging myself and uploading for the sponsor.

 - looking for co-maintainers? do you need a sponsor?

I do need a sponsor, ref
