Bug#1076519: libinchi1: new version 1.07 of InChI (now MIT license scheme)

2024-07-17 Thread Norwid Behrnd
Package: libinchi1
Version: 1.03+dfsg-4+b2
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: nbeh...@yahoo.com

Dear Maintainer,

I hereby request the update of the InChI package as provided by DebiChem.

At present, download and installation of libinchi1/libinchi-bin from the
repositories of Debian 13/trixie provides the software equivalent to version
1.03/June 15, 2010. While Andrius Merkys thankfully packaged this version in
2019, there already was the request to provide the community a package
corresponding to a more recent version of InChI. However, starting with
version 1.04 (September 2011), InChI trust adopted a license scheme which did
not comply Debian's policies (see, for example [1]).

Today Wednesday, 2024-07-17, the InChI trust released a new version 1.07 of the
software. In addition to revised and extended functionality, the open source
project hosted on GitHub[2] now adopts the MIT license scheme.

Bug#1069249: lintian: Debian Policy (version 4.7.0, published April 2024) appears to be unknown to lintian

2024-04-18 Thread Norwid Behrnd
Package: lintian
Version: 2.117.0
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: nbeh...@yahoo.com

Dear Maintainers,

in preparation of an update of ruby-mdl to adhere the recently published Debian
Policy (version 4.7.0), while checking my local `ruby-
mdl_0.13.0-5_amd64.changes` file prior to the subsequent upload, I observe the
checker considers version 4.6.2 as the most recent one.

For the particular package, the warning issued is not relevant; but for those
providing e.g., binaries the picture might differ.[1] It were desireable if an
update of the checker can consider the changes.

Thank you

Bug#1061483: tipp10: lesson 18 unexpectedly trains with English and German corpora

Dear Maintainer,

I gradually advanced to exercise with lesson 18 / all characters in a setup
with "USA | QWERTY | Windows" as keyboard layout, and "English | QWERTY" about
the language. In contrast to the previous installments, the dictations now
use a mix of English and German (cf. the attached dictation copy-pasted from
the report window after one session below).

For now, I'm not sure if this affects the progress of the training, for
instance the use of square brackets and curly braces. Based on my
recollection,
these characters were not considered by earlier lessons, nor were used in
training sessions of lesson 18.

By the conventions of the Ruby team,[1] the name `ruby-mdl` conveys the idea
the binary provides only a library. For them, the binary however provides an
application conventionally named without the prefix `ruby-`; hence their
recommendation to rename both the binary as well as files in the pristine-tar
branch.[2]

Was the collection of mdl "as new" into a separate folder and eventual pristine
git repository (without the trouble of ruby-mdl history) an error on my side?
I thought the simultaneous presence of some files "ruby-mdl*.*" and of files
"mdl*.*" (and perhaps some not yet correctly renamed ones) confusing and hence
opted-in for what appeared to me to be a clean cut.

Bug#1051716: mopac-makpol apparently not yet packaged

Package: mopac
Version: 22.0.6+dfsg-1+b1
Severity: wishlist
X-Debbugs-Cc: nbeh...@yahoo.com

Dear Maintainer,

apparently, the currently available package about MOPAC 22.0.6 does not yet
include the program's utility `mopac-makpol`. For future releases maintained
by DebiChem, I would like to suggest its addition.

To quote one of the developers, "MAKPOL is performing a structural
transformation - it is unfolding the periodic unit cell of a crystal into a
supercell - which isn't too complicated, but not something that OpenBabel can
do at the moment as far as I'm aware. MAKPOL is much simpler than MOPAC and
PARAM and may eventually be replaced by a Python script."[1] A dedicated web
page briefly outlines its functionality,[2] and provides a compiled executable
for Microsoft Windows.[3] Else, the GUI based installer for Linux the project
distributes offers it as a non mandatory extra.[4]

With best regards,

Norwid Behrnd

There was the attempt to resolve the name issue by renaming the package.
Given the freeze a couple of days ahead, the suggest received however was to
defer this *for now*,[1] or to risk that the package won't be considered to
enter stable. Thus this, and a few other things (e.g., still the «failed to
analyze the VCS repository» is seen, share of the maintainership with the Ruby
Team) remain on my todo, though they better are addressed for the time after
Q2/Q3 of 2023, provided `bookworm` was released.

Bug#1029186: reply: RFS: libcommons-validator-java/1:1.7-1 [Team] -- ease and speed development and maintenance of validation rules

2023-02-03 Thread Norwid Behrnd
Hello Min Sun,

is there a particular reason why you opt for / stick to distribution
`UNRELEASED` for a package already monitored by the tracker?[1] It is the
entry e.g., `dch -i` puts into file `/debian/changelog` when you start to work
on a new version (increment) of a package. After all other other work on your
side is done, an eventual change to the string `unstable` (then lower case
only) is one of the keys necessary to let results of your work enter branch
`unstable`, and later `testing`, etc.

Regards,

Norwid

Bug#1030307: RFS: posixsignalmanager/0.3-2 -- posix signal handling for qt

2023-02-02 Thread Norwid Behrnd
> So long for a library, change the name.

It might be better to rename the package after bookworm became stable.

My intent is to rename `ruby-mdl` into `markdownlint`; like
`posixsignalmanager`, it is a package accepted into `testing` a couple of
days ago. The recommendation I received was to stick with the odd name *for
now*, and to defer attempts to rename the package, or else face the possibility
that neither one form (i.e., old name, or new name) would ship.[1] Because
the soft-freeze of `bookworm` merely is a few days ahead (February 12).[2]

With these options ahead, I choose to stick (for now) with the name already
introduced. It might be the safer choice for Christoph, too.

Regards,

Norwid

Sorry, this was a misunderstanding on my side. In upload #3, with reference
to the documentation, the adjustment of the changelog and provision of the new
tag now are the only two intentional changes to the data.

Bug#1025320: suggestion: include of markdownlint as .deb

2022-12-02 Thread Norwid Behrnd
Package: markdown
Version: 1.0.1-11
Severity: wishlist
X-Debbugs-Cc: nbeh...@yahoo.com

Dear Maintainer,

while using markdown more often for taking notes, I noticed markdownlint[1]
as a handy tool to reveal inconsistencies in the formatting. On the project
page, a few Linuxes are listed which provide the too from their repositories
as a package. In the case of Debian (and cross-checked with `synaptic` for
Debian 12/bookworm), there is no .deb yet, though the idea already floats
in the project's issue at list since 2020.[2] Instead, `rubygems` and the
subsequent call

```shell
gem install mdl
```

is one possibility to install the program here.

Thus I would like to relay the idea with the suggest to add a .deb as a
vector of distribution for markdownlint.
