Please, don't begin again. The problem is not in live-build. The
problem is in apt-setup package that not taking into account the
 usb-hdd media to install.

I have not began.

Sometimes the easiest fix is not the right fix but a workaround and
that's why I asked for Daniel's input on that.

I don't know if you know it but I am an old contributor of Debian Live
and I always try to fix and help the handling of Debian Live related
stuff so before complaning please stop and think twice. This avoid
losing your and other's time with useless email.

The patch is running. What more do you want?

Personally I am not confident if the patch can or not have bad effects
in other use cases and then I asked Daniel (on this mail), Joey and
Colin's (on #debian-boot) input about that..

We won't risk installer stability if a risky patch. We're too close of release.

We are not denying the fix for the release but we need to be sure about the fix.

Cheers,

In testing for #496647, I found it useful to add a Makefile rule to build a
standalone ethtool-lite.  It doesn't get built by 'all', or as part of the
package building process, but it might make life a bit easier for others in
the future, so it'd be nice to see it in SVN.

We will be soon moving to GIT so please queue it for when we branch
rc1 so you can safely push it.

My recommendation on this bug would be for people with as many different
chipsets as possible to try my modified ethtool-lite on their machines

everywhere.  The more adventurous option would be to put the patch in
immediately after squeeze, and see if anyone reports catastrophic network
link detection failure as a result.

Once we branch for rc1 this could be pushed and then we upload it as
soon as we release squeeze out.

The other option is to punt this whole bug report at the kernel, since the
e1000e driver obviously has some confusion in the realm of MII support.

This ought to be done IMO in any case. This looks like a driver fault
and ought to be fixed if possible.

Please accept it however in the yaboot case I would prefer to try to
get a newer version into squeeze after this fix has been done. So in

 - accept the t-p-u upload;

Bug#603533: Missing sl82c105 ide module on IBM IntelliStation POWER 275

2010-11-18 Thread Otavio Salvador
This controller is not PowerPC specific. It can be run by traditional
IDE driver or by modern libata pata driver. PowerPC kernel is compiled
with the traditional IDE driver (sl82c105 module). Other kernel flavors
use modern libata pata driver (pata_sl82c105). These two modules won't
be used together, so a kernel flavor is compiled with either traditional
IDE, or libata driver, but not both.

I'm not quite sure why is PowerPC kernel not compiled with the modern
libpata driver in Squeeze. At some point in the future all traditional
IDE drivers will be purged out, and pata_sl82c105 will appear in the
 PowerPC flavor, too.

Miguel, please make this change into powerpc udebs only so we avoid
another mass-upload.

After squeeze we ought to review those udebs again and discuss with
kernel team about moving to libata for ppc too.

OK. I can wait a bit anyway as the machine is running but as XBMC + pvr
recors reading skips a bit (due to context switch between XBMC and VDR +
streamdev as streaming in a remote XBMC works), I'm rather sure I will

Many thanks to Jim for this patch. Debian installer should use this last
 revision to fix this problem.

Thanks for Jim and you for handling this issue.

I talked to Colin today and he will take a look on this issue.

It it worth noting that partman is still deficient in the way it handle a
parted-server error. Improving it will certainly help to get better problem
report from Debian users. I have see on the internet others installer report
about hang at the same partman operation time.

Also, the debian/rules for parted still should be updated with my proposed
 patch to remove obsoletes directives.

So even if the primary cause is now fixed, from a quality view, this bug is
still not in the state to be closed. Or should other bug be opened for those
 point ?

I agree. Colin will probably look at this while checking the patch
into parted's Debian package.

I queued it for inclusion in next kernel update. This will be in few days.

Bug#600852: Fail to read empty but gzipped Packages files

2010-10-20 Thread Otavio Salvador
Package: apt
Version: 0.8.7
Severity: critical
Tags: d-i

During the build of Debian Installer we have the possibility to use
localudebs so a build/localudebs directory scanned and a Packages file
is generated for it.

In the case of an empty Packages file (gzipped) is used, APT fails to
read it and in this case breaking the whole building process of
installer.

Downgrading apt to 0.8.5 I was able to build d-i file so a change done
later then 0.8.5 has broken it.

TIA,

Btw, now that #595007 has been fixed (thanks Colin!), this partman-zfs

I would be careful not to let it migrate to squeeze unless parted 2.3-3

Upload it to unstable please.

Bug#600320: Installation: set password for root; did not create a user; could not login after 1st reboot.

2010-10-15 Thread Otavio Salvador
Hello John,

On Fri, Oct 15, 2010 at 9:06 PM, John Hunter jmd...@btinternet.com wrote:
I was installing squeeze over an old version of Ubuntu which had users
already set up in /home. I set up the root password but declined to create any
[more] users. The install apparently finished OK and then I rebooted. Upon
reboot, the system would not let me log in as root so that I could not
 manually
 set up /etc/password, /etc/shadow, /etc/group and /etc/sudoers. I then had to
resort to using the CD in recovery mode to set up the users.

From your description it looks like you did not formated the partition
of data. Debian Installer cannot be installed (and it is not designed
to be used in this case) to install over an existent system. In case
you have a /home in a separated partition it can be reused but the
system _need_ to be installed into a fresh partition.

If the setup script has not created a user then root should be allowed to log
in; otherwise one's laptop is as useful as a bag of slates.

See my description above. If it is not the case, please describe your
use case more extensively.

I would call myself experienced; I am a retired comp-sci academic with *nix
experience going back to System VII. I have seen install glitches in my time,
but none as stupid as this.

I won't comment on this.

In passing, I should mention that on the 6th October, I tried to install
squeeze using the network install image (191MB). That got as far as installing
a bootstrap system then did not seem to have a script or any instructions to
load anything more: thus resulting in another bag of slates. Was that ever
 tested?

Without the URL I can't know which version you've used. I must remind
you that Squeeze is still in development and you being an
experienced user you must know that during this process we can end
up breaking the system sometimes.

If you wish a stable system, use stable releases. For Squeeze
Installer, alpha1 is the last release and beta1 is being prepared so
we're proud of receiving feedback from users (be it positive or
failure reports) but sarcasm is not going to help in fixing the bugs
you found (or think to have found).

Cheers,

This wasn't clear from your patch. So please:

 - commit it into SVN;

Since it is a new udeb you could commit it in the final required

In my opinion, dpkg should provide a way to turn off those offensive *sync()

I fully agree that d-i doesn't need and shouldn't use it by default.
In fact some embedded systems shouldn't use it either in production

As previously said in this thread, d-i needs to be restarted in case
of power outage or something broken and fsync won't help on that

detect wireless cards or disk drives. and when nobody really cares
 about video cards.

Just a wild guess: I know nearly nothing about all this crap..:-)

I guess the problem is that the installer doesn't have the drm modules
so it doesn't know what firmware they might need?  Ideally this would be
handled together with other firmware installation.

That said, now that I look at the bug title, X shouldn't hang even if
firmware is missing, it should be able to start without acceleration.  I
think.  Might warrant a separate bug report against
xserver-xorg-video-radeon, if there isn't one already.

This is supposely to be handled by discover step at pkgsel; I think it
is just a matter of providing the need data for its database to fix
it.

However, this would mean a debootstrapped chroot would need to have its /dev

This looks to be the best alternative IMO. We need to do that for
/proc and /sys so /dev won't be a problem et all.

Chasing down the issue in everything that uses debootstrap seems hard to
 me..

All those tools are going to require the same fixes when adding
support for kFreeBSD and Hurd so the right time to change it looks to
be just after Squeeze.

This is important so we keep support for installing Lenny if someone
wants to. This can be dropped after Squeeze release.

This is untested. I'm not 100% sure that my test is correct, so
 comments welcomed.

I haven't test it yet but it looks right for me.

Another possibility would be:

...
if ! $log $chroot $ROOT adduser $USER sudo /dev/null 21; then
echo $USER ALL=(ALL) ALL $ROOT/etc/sudoers
fi
...

This avoids the checking against dpkg.

Bug#595152: ZFS support

IIUC grub-common isn't yet installed the first time findfs() is used.

Alternatively, one could just apt-install grub-common and then
use $chroot $ROOT grub-probe directly.  Is this better?  I assumed
 redundant apt-install calls are cheap.

You are copying a file from /boot from d-i environment, it looks
better if you queue up the package that provides it to be installed in
 target to avoid this.

 Is it possible?

No. /boot/zfs/zpool.cache is dynamically generated. It's some sort of
index of existing ZFS filesystems (think of it like fstab). GRUB itself
doesn't need it, but kFreeBSD does, so GRUB loads it at boot time
and needs to know about it when generating grub.cfg.

This is more a Colin's call then mine.

Colin, what do you think about Robert's patch? Technically it looks OK
but I prefer if you ack it.

For some (well, probably only the Neo FreeRunner), g_ether is automatically

This patch registers g_ether, so that we can ssh to the device after

Good; I think you could use a mini.iso to test which parameter is
making it fail so we can restrict the code to look at.

The installer itself calls udhcpc with many parameters and I think one
of those are making your router to reset. Can you try those and see
which one makes it fails? You can use console-2 at installer to play

Bug#573429: installation-reports: some characters screwed up in menus + windoze detected but omitted from grub menu

2010-08-22 Thread Otavio Salvador
forcemerge 573429 567980
thanks

Hello,

 1) characters meant for menu boundaries were corrupt, and printed
funny-looking ascii characters.  Everything was usable, but certainly not
as intended by those who programmed the installer.

Please see if you can reproduce it using current daily images and
provide a screenshot or picture of it so we can see what you mean by
corrupt. In meanwhile I will assume it is working fine.

 2) the network detection seems a regression from the lenny installer I tried
several months ago.  I do not use dhcp, so I specify the network manually.
The old lenny installer was happy with the network number, gateway, and
DNS.  The installer then discovered the computer name and domain
automatically. This new squeeze installer needs all this info by hand.

Please in case you can reproduce it using latest dailies elaborate it
a bit more because I didn't figure out what you meant.

 3) the installer detected correctly the windoze OS, and made me assume that
it would be included it in the grub initial menu.  It wasn't.
Post installation I had to run update-grub manually, then the menu did
 include windoze as expected.

I can confirm this issue. I am reassigning it to grub-installer since
it needs to be fixed there.

Thanks a lot by reporting it.

So parted_devices is run with the wrong libblkid1-udeb installed
and only _after_ parted_devices is run, some other udev pulls
in the new 2.17 libblkid1-udeb and then parted_devies works.

The cause of parted not having the right depends is due util-linux
packages to provide the symbols and shlibs files. The later gives the
wrong information since it is hardcoded to 2.16 while 2.17 is the
newest one. The right solution from my POV is to use the symbols only

Conceptually it is OK but why not move it to post-base-installer.d?

Well, my idea was to clean it twice, once after debootstrap and once
at the end (after kernel and extra packages).  Doing it in
post-base-installer.d would not clean the kernel and extra packages.

It looks it will need to be optional otherwise this is going to break
Debian EDU.

But I see your point in doing it twice :)

If you are *very* short of disk space, doing it twice might make sense.

Nonsense. If you're that short on diskspace you have a totally unusable
 system anyway.

Not really; 80 or 90mb can be a big difference on this case. So
there're cases it will be important. What we need to discuss is if it
ought or not to be supported by d-i.

I think it could have a preseed option for it and do it so it is
easier for 'short-on-disk' devices to work.

One setup that would not break Debian Edu is to clean the apt cache
once just after debootstrap, as bind-mounting the apt cache is only
done after debootstrap is done when building the LTSP chroot.  The
reason is simply that as far as I know, there is no way to get
debootstrap to use an existing apt cache, so those packages are
downloaded every time.  It is at the moment ~50 MiB of debs.  The
remaining 3 GiB of packages are fetched from the apt cache,
 thought. :)

So it being done at base-installer time would not hurt you, indeed.
Then basically it could be always done (and disabled by a preseeding
option if needed).

Bug#586434: Let's clean the apt cache

The only reason I see to keep the cache is when some packages (after
base-installer) fail to install. If we want to cover that case it should
be detected automatically by testing the result of tasksel [1]. The final
cleanup could be omitted in that case.

 Sound like a good idea.

Agreed.

[1] Checking installation of packages using apt-install is much
harder to do as there are many different calls and failure may be
expected in some cases. It also gains much less as their total size
 is much less.

I believe it would not be very hard.  We would have to add code to
apt-install, and to the udeb handling the queue updated by apt-install
before base-installer is exeucted.  No need to update all those
 calling apt-install for this.

Agreed as well.

I see no reason for leaving .deb files in /var/cache/apt/archives on a
fresh installation, so let's run apt-get clean before reboot.

 OK to apply?

I fully agree with you and I do it every time I finish an install so
it does looks like the logical thing to do is to move it to d-i :)

Is there a reason why base-installer doesn't clear the apt cache after
installing base?  I end up with about 70 MB of .debs in
/var/cache/apt/archives and this hurts on machines with little space
(such as machines with only 512 MB flash storage).

The following patch, which clears the cache after debootstrap and then

I fully agree that is nice to reduce the delta between both projects, but

IIt might also allow the use of migration-assistant, but I suspect it's
not usable as is in Debian.

I think that adding support to Debian to migration-assistent needs to be
done first so we don't have an useless udeb in archive in meanwhile.

Cheers,
