Once we branch for rc1 this could be pushed and then we upload it as soon as we release squeeze out. Bug#603533: Missing sl82c105 ide module on IBM IntelliStation POWER 275
This controller is not PowerPC specific. It can be run by traditional IDE driver or by modern libata pata driver. PowerPC kernel is compiled with the traditional IDE driver (sl82c105 module). Other kernel flavors use modern libata pata driver (pata_sl82c105). These two modules won't be used together, so a kernel flavor is compiled with either traditional IDE, or libata driver, but not both. I'm not quite sure why is PowerPC kernel not compiled with the modern libpata driver in Squeeze. At some point in the future all traditional IDE drivers will be purged out, and pata_sl82c105 will appear in the PowerPC flavor, too. Miguel, please make this change into powerpc udebs only so we avoid another mass-upload. After squeeze we ought to review those udebs again and discuss with kernel team about moving to libata for ppc too. -- Otavio Salvador O.S. Bug#600320: Installation: set password for root; did not create a user; could not login after 1st reboot.
Hello John, On Fri, Oct 15, 2010 at 9:06 PM, John Hunter jmd...@btinternet.com wrote: I was installing squeeze over an old version of Ubuntu which had users already set up in /home. I set up the root password but declined to create any [more] users. The install apparently finished OK and then I rebooted. Upon reboot, the system would not let me log in as root so that I could not manually set up /etc/password, /etc/shadow, /etc/group and /etc/sudoers. I then had to resort to using the CD in recovery mode to set up the users. From your description it looks like you did not formated the partition of data. Debian Installer cannot be installed (and it is not designed to be used in this case) to install over an existent system. In case you have a /home in a separated partition it can be reused but the system _need_ to be installed into a fresh partition. If the setup script has not created a user then root should be allowed to log in; otherwise one's laptop is as useful as a bag of slates. See my description above. If it is not the case, please describe your use case more extensively. I would call myself experienced; I am a retired comp-sci academic with *nix experience going back to System VII. I have seen install glitches in my time, but none as stupid as this. I won't comment on this. In passing, I should mention that on the 6th October, I tried to install squeeze using the network install image (191MB). That got as far as installing a bootstrap system then did not seem to have a script or any instructions to load anything more: thus resulting in another bag of slates. Was that ever tested? Without the URL I can't know which version you've used. I must remind you that Squeeze is still in development and you being an experienced user you must know that during this process we can end up breaking the system sometimes. If you wish a stable system, use stable releases. For Squeeze Installer, alpha1 is the last release and beta1 is being prepared so we're proud of receiving feedback from users (be it positive or failure reports) but sarcasm is not going to help in fixing the bugs you found (or think to have found). Just a wild guess: I know nearly nothing about all this crap..:-) I guess the problem is that the installer doesn't have the drm modules so it doesn't know what firmware they might need? Ideally this would be handled together with other firmware installation. That said, now that I look at the bug title, X shouldn't hang even if firmware is missing, it should be able to start without acceleration. I think. Bug#595152: ZFS support
Hello Robert, On Mon, Sep 6, 2010 at 7:48 AM, Robert Millan r...@debian.org wrote: Hi Otavio, 2010/9/5, Otavio Salvador ota...@ossystems.com.br: I didn't get the reason why you created grub_probe. Why grub-common wasn't available in our target? IIUC grub-common isn't yet installed the first time findfs() is used. Alternatively, one could just apt-install grub-common and then use $chroot $ROOT grub-probe directly. Is this better? I assumed redundant apt-install calls are cheap. You are copying a file from /boot from d-i environment, it looks better if you queue up the package that provides it to be installed in target to avoid this. Is it possible? No. /boot/zfs/zpool.cache is dynamically generated. It's some sort of index of existing ZFS filesystems (think of it like fstab). GRUB itself doesn't need it, but kFreeBSD does, so GRUB loads it at boot time and needs to know about it when generating grub.cfg. This is more a Colin's call then mine. Bug#573429: installation-reports: some characters screwed up in menus + windoze detected but omitted from grub menu
forcemerge 573429 567980 thanks Hello, 1) characters meant for menu boundaries were corrupt, and printed funny-looking ascii characters. Everything was usable, but certainly not as intended by those who programmed the installer. Please see if you can reproduce it using current daily images and provide a screenshot or picture of it so we can see what you mean by corrupt. In meanwhile I will assume it is working fine. 2) the network detection seems a regression from the lenny installer I tried several months ago. I do not use dhcp, so I specify the network manually. The old lenny installer was happy with the network number, gateway, and DNS. The installer then discovered the computer name and domain automatically. This new squeeze installer needs all this info by hand. Please in case you can reproduce it using latest dailies elaborate it a bit more because I didn't figure out what you meant. 3) the installer detected correctly the windoze OS, and made me assume that it would be included it in the grub initial menu. It wasn't. Post installation I had to run update-grub manually, then the menu did include windoze as expected. I can confirm this issue. I am reassigning it to grub-installer since it needs to be fixed there. Thanks a lot by reporting it. -- Otavio Salvador O.S. Bug#587570: Analysis
clone 587570 -1 reassign -1 util-linux retitle -1 Wrong shlibs information priority -1 important thanks Hello, On Mon, Jul 5, 2010 at 5:50 PM, Martin Michlmayr t...@cyrius.com wrote: libparted0-udeb_2.2-7 udeb has Depends: libblkid1-udeb (= 2.16) However, it requires 2.17 alpha1 includes this in the netboot image: libblkid1-udeb 2.16.2-0 So parted_devices is run with the wrong libblkid1-udeb installed and only _after_ parted_devices is run, some other udev pulls in the new 2.17 libblkid1-udeb and then parted_devies works. The cause of parted not having the right depends is due util-linux packages to provide the symbols and shlibs files. The later gives the wrong information since it is hardcoded to 2.16 while 2.17 is the newest one. The right solution from my POV is to use the symbols only and drop the shlibs. -- Otavio Salvador O.S. Hello, On Sun, Jun 20, 2010 at 10:54 AM, Petter Reinholdtsen p...@hungry.com wrote: One setup that would not break Debian Edu is to clean the apt cache once just after debootstrap, as bind-mounting the apt cache is only done after debootstrap is done when building the LTSP chroot. The reason is simply that as far as I know, there is no way to get debootstrap to use an existing apt cache, so those packages are downloaded every time. It is at the moment ~50 MiB of debs. The remaining 3 GiB of packages are fetched from the apt cache, thought. :) So it being done at base-installer time would not hurt you, indeed. Then basically it could be always done (and disabled by a preseeding option if needed). -- Otavio Salvador O.S. Hello, On Sun, Jun 20, 2010 at 10:41 AM, Petter Reinholdtsen p...@hungry.com wrote: [Frans Pop] The only reason I see to keep the cache is when some packages (after base-installer) fail to install. If we want to cover that case it should be detected automatically by testing the result of tasksel [1]. The final cleanup could be omitted in that case. Sound like a good idea. Agreed. [1] Checking installation of packages using apt-install is much harder to do as there are many different calls and failure may be expected in some cases. It also gains much less as their total size is much less. I believe it would not be very hard. We would have to add code to apt-install, and to the udeb handling the queue updated by apt-install before base-installer is exeucted. No need to update all those calling apt-install for this.
