Bug#777013: ax25-node testers needed
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA256 I have a candidate package built to address bug 777013 (and so the associated CVE). I would like some testing to be done by other users to verify the problem of the ax25-node program hanging on SIGQUIT has been corrected. The candidate package can be found at https://people.debian.org/~pouelle/ An amd64 version of the binary is there, as well as the source. If this package works, it will be uploaded to testing as ax25-node_0.3.2-8. Colin Colin, While I appreciate upstream's concern, having MySQL *installed on the same machine* is not a requirement for it to run. This seems to me to be a case for Recommends rather than Depends From the policy manual: Recommends This declares a strong, but not absolute, dependency. The Recommends field should list packages that would be found together with this one in all but unusual installations. The upstream includes this on the cqrlog website's download page: The binaries should work in any distribution. Please don't forget to install MySQL server, MySQL client, Hamlib libraries and if LoTW support is desired, trustedqsl package and libssl-devel must be installed. If the upstream was truly concerned about the software just working he would embed the database server in the cqrlog tarball (reference MythTV's treatment of FFMPEG) and it would all just install at once. An example from a similar case in Ubuntu - MythTV. The MythTV application is non-functional without a MySQL database server running on the local network. None of the MythTV functional packages depend on the MySQL server package, just mysql-client. (The meta-package MythTV does depend on the MySQL server) With the current Debian package, I can not install cqrlog on my shack machine without either accepting a lot of wasted space/time (installing MySQL on the box and then configuring it not to run or allowing it to run on the shack box sucking up resources) or using force-depends vodoo to make cqrlog install this one time without pulling in MySQL - and then having to remember to do this in the future so and update/upgrade doesn't pull MySQL back in. I'm not seeing where it suggests that personally, but I'm probably too close to it. We can certainly add a pointer to 10.1 here. Sorry, I should have copied this part of 7.4 too: Conflicts should be used when two packages provide the same file and will continue to do so If you read the entire section 7.4 is seems entirely reasonable to create a package with an executable name that already exists in Debian with a package conflicts tag if the two executables have different functionality. Section 10.1 says we can't ever do that. 10.1 also leaves open the possibility of two executable with the same name in different packages as long as the functionality is the same. This might not be a good thing if one package later adds/removes functionality. Pat -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#614907: Question of sincerity on the node/nodejs nausia
Can anyone explain to me why the message I sent with a proposal containing a MAJOR concession to the Node.js maintainers has not received a response from the Node.js maintainers but rather caused them (I'm assuming Jonathan Nieder is some how acting with their knowledge or approval at some level) to run crying to the technical committee? The proposal gave them their way provided they were willing to do the heavy lifting everybody claims should be so easy. I have received absolutely no comments, no counter offers, no sure, no we'll need some help, but ok and not even you're nuts. Reflecting on this has lead me to the following possible conclusions: 0. The Node.js maintainers were so shocked they have lost all cognitive abilities and are delirious with joy 1. The Node.js maintainers were never interested in a compromise solution of any kind 2. Node.js maintainers are not really interested in doing any work to solve the issue beyond changing their binary back to node What did I get from proposing a major concession to solve the issue? I got called a passive aggressive, stonewalling individual not interested in moving the issue forward. Bug#630893: ax25-apps: Should be removed from main
Sam, I just talked to Jeff on the telephone. The email is from him. He does wish to release the code under a BSD license. I have included in the Cc list of this message Jeff, the maintainers of the upstream ax25-apps, ax25-tools, and libax25 (Ralf and Thomas). I would expect an email from Jeff (reply all) stating his intention that the code he contributed to ripdump.c in 4/1993 be released under a BSD license should be sufficient. It would be good if the email were signed by a gpg or pgp key owned by Jeff if possible. If something else needs to be done, someone else needs to let Jeff know. I want to thank Jeff again for agreeing to release the code under a license that allows it to remain in the main Debian free software repository. So rather than talking about “for learning Morse code (Continuous Wave)” we mean something more like “for learning Morse code (CW in ham radio jargon)”. A case where the acronym gained a life of its own. You are really over thinking this and making it way more complex than it needs to be. unixcw is a program useful for learning Morse Code. The CW in unixcw refers to the traditional method of sending Morse code via radio: turning on and off (keying) a radio transmitter that otherwise would produce a continuous wave (CW) emission. 73, Pat NE4PO -- Patrick Ouellette p...@flying-gecko.net ne4po (at) arrl (dot) net Amateur Radio: NE4PO What kind of change have you been in the world today? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
