Line 20 of the file '/usr/share/man/man1/file.1.gz', when uncompressed, is:
.Ek -words
All other man1 pages (searched [a-z]*) have just '.Ek'.

Bug#605751: apt autoremove (still) tries to remove essential packages

2010-12-02 Thread Paul Higgins

Bug#566501: switching virtual consoles during boot or when using setupcon/

2010-09-11 Thread Paul Higgins
I saw something like the problem in bugs #566501 and #570338 since about
February and just spent some time with a more knowledgeable collegue to
investigate.

I have two PCs that I run with the 'testing' distribution.

On one of these PCs, from February thru July, I was able to change the
line in /etc/default/console-setup from:
VERBOSE_OUTPUT=no
to
VERBOSE_OUTPUT=yes
to fix the problem on one of my systems.

When I did a upgrade in August, the problem re-occurred, and the final
VT could be any of tty[1-6] after booting.

(My other PC never exhibited this problem in any way.)

We found this thread: http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/11/15/72, talking about
a problem in /usr/bin/consolechars (package: console-tools) that seems
to explain this problem as being in the kernel. We couldn't find any
patch that fixed it.

'/usr/bin/consolechars' is used by '/bin/setupcon' which is used in
'/etc/init.d/console-setup' (both in package: console-setup) which is
where my system seemed to have the problem. I hacked '/bin/setupcon' to
save the vt number at entry (from '/bin/fgconsole') and restored it at
exit (with '/usr/bin/chvt'). This fixed the problem on my PC.

'/usr/bin/consolechars' is also used by /etc/init.d/console-screen.sh
(package: console-tools) which might explain the behavior in bug
#566501.

I found it is also used by '/usr/bin/charset' and
'/usr/bin/unicode_start' (also package: console-tools).

Hope this helps
Paul Higgins

Bug#543304: /usr/bin/X: Options -showDefaultModulePath and -showDefaultLibPath return extraneous text

2009-08-23 Thread Paul Higgins
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+19
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/X

I was installing an updated video driver on my system. (Nvidia's:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.20-pkg1.run)

It complained about not being able to retrieve the module and lib paths for the
installed
configuration. Fortunately it's defaults worked for my system. I traced the
error to the
command options mentioned. Here is sample output on my PC:

===
r...@higginsp6(1):~# X -showDefaultModulePath
X: warning; process set to priority -2 instead of requested priority 0
/usr/lib/xorg/modules

r...@higginsp6(1):~# X -showDefaultLibPath
X: warning; process set to priority -2 instead of requested priority 0
/usr/lib
===
The X: warning line is unexpected. I don't think it is reasonable to expect
users of these command
options to ignore this. (I will also report this to NVidia too.)

I obviously don't know if X is where the message originates. I trust this will
be redirected as needed.

BTW: Why can't these command options work when X is running? I get the
message:
X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting.
Seems like these information options should work anytime, anywhere.

Bug#503694: upgrade-reports: apt-get update gets frequent Hash sum mismatches

2008-10-27 Thread Paul Higgins
Package: upgrade-reports
Severity: important

9 times out ten in the last few weeks, when I do the apt-get update,
prior to upgrading, I get messages such as the following:
--
W: Failed to fetch
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/unstable/non-free/binary-i386/Packages.bz2
Hash Sum mismatch

W: Failed to fetch
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/unstable/non-free/source/Sources.bz2
Hash Sum mismatch

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old
ones used instead.
---
This occurs when I try it again. If I wait 10 minutes or so, it works
successfully. I assume this is due to a update being pushed to your
servers. Why does it fail on the same downloads over such a long period
of time? I don't think it should fail more that once or twice.

BTW: I didn't see this happen very often as recently as August.

Bug#501866: Missing dependancy - libpango1.0-common.prerm uses defoma-app in pkg defoma

2008-10-10 Thread Paul Higgins
Package: libpango1.0-common
Version: 1.20.5-2
Severity: normal

I dusted off a system that hasn't been upgraded since Oct of 2007.

Upgrading it required a big leap in package versions. The upgrade
of perl, perl-base, and perl-modules caused several problems.
(I'm filing this report for each package involved, as I'm not sure
where the problem is.)

The following excerpts from my upgrade process (and the dpkg.log
excerpt that follows) show all my apparent dependancy problems. I
suspect that the half-configure / half-install / unpack step for
perl-modules removed the required modules from the
/usr/share/perl/5.8.8 tree.

The prerm or postrm scripts for these packages use either
/usr/bin/defoma-app or /usr/sbin/install-docs (in packages defoma and
doc-base). Those in turn reference files in perl-modules already
removed, causing libtiff4 to abort the install. In summary:

   fontconfig.prerm, libpango1.prerm, and libwmf0.2-7.postrm
all invoke /usr/bin/defoma-app; which needs File/Copy.pm
from perl-modules. It was able to continue using the prerm
   script from the new package.

   libpng12-0.prerm, libtiff4.prerm, base-passwd.postinst,
   cupsys.prerm, and shared-mime-info.prerm invoke
   /usr/sbin/install-docs which needs Pod/Usage.pm from perl-modules.

I had a backup of the /usr/share/perl/5.8.8 tree, which I reloaded to
aloow me to complete the upgrade.

Bug#501868: libpng12-0: I dusted off a system that hasn't been upgraded since Oct of 2007.

2008-10-10 Thread Paul Higgins
Package: libpng12-0
Version: 1.2.27-2
Severity: normal

I dusted off a system that hasn't been upgraded since Oct of 2007.

Upgrading it required a big leap in package versions. The upgrade
of perl, perl-base, and perl-modules caused several problems.
(I'm filing this report for each package involved, as I'm not sure
where the problem is.)

The following excerpts from my upgrade process (and the dpkg.log
excerpt that follows) show all my apparent dependancy problems. I
suspect that the half-configure / half-install / unpack step for
perl-modules removed the required modules from the
/usr/share/perl/5.8.8 tree.

The prerm or postrm scripts for these packages use either
/usr/bin/defoma-app or /usr/sbin/install-docs (in packages defoma and
doc-base). Those in turn reference files in perl-modules already
removed, causing libtiff4 to abort the install. In summary:

   fontconfig.prerm, libpango1.prerm, and libwmf0.2-7.postrm
all invoke /usr/bin/defoma-app; which needs File/Copy.pm
from perl-modules. It was able to continue using the prerm
   script from the new package.

   libpng12-0.prerm, libtiff4.prerm, base-passwd.postinst,
   cupsys.prerm, and shared-mime-info.prerm invoke
   /usr/sbin/install-docs which needs Pod/Usage.pm from perl-modules.

I had a backup of the /usr/share/perl/5.8.8 tree, which I reloaded to
aloow me to complete the upgrade.

Bug#501874: Missing dependancy - cupsys.prerm uses install-docs in pkg doc-base

2008-10-10 Thread Paul Higgins
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.3.8-1lenny1
Severity: normal

I dusted off a system that hasn't been upgraded since Oct of 2007.

Upgrading it required a big leap in package versions. The upgrade
of perl, perl-base, and perl-modules caused several problems.
(I'm filing this report for each package involved, as I'm not sure
where the problem is.)

The following excerpts from my upgrade process (and the dpkg.log
excerpt that follows) show all my apparent dependancy problems. I
suspect that the half-configure / half-install / unpack step for
perl-modules removed the required modules from the
/usr/share/perl/5.8.8 tree.

The prerm or postrm scripts for these packages use either
/usr/bin/defoma-app or /usr/sbin/install-docs (in packages defoma and
doc-base). Those in turn reference files in perl-modules already
removed, causing libtiff4 to abort the install. In summary:

   fontconfig.prerm, libpango1.prerm, and libwmf0.2-7.postrm
all invoke /usr/bin/defoma-app; which needs File/Copy.pm
from perl-modules. It was able to continue using the prerm
   script from the new package.

   libpng12-0.prerm, libtiff4.prerm, base-passwd.postinst,
   cupsys.prerm, and shared-mime-info.prerm invoke
   /usr/sbin/install-docs which needs Pod/Usage.pm from perl-modules.

I had a backup of the /usr/share/perl/5.8.8 tree, which I reloaded to
aloow me to complete the upgrade.

Bug#494477: Additional info on failure...

2008-10-03 Thread Paul Higgins
I've upgraded three systems to use 2.6.26 kernels. (2.6.26-5 or 2.6.25-6) and see this
problem on all of them. (One has a P2, another a P3, and the last a P4 CPU.)

Booting an old 2.6.25-5 kernel from grub makes the problem go away.

The insert key is a mode.. On odd presses it disables the keys and on even presses they
work again.

Using showkey I found:

showkey --scancodes shows the same output when the keys are working or
not.
showkey --keycodes is the same.
showkey --keymap output three bytes for each arrow key only when the keys work (else
nothing).

Hope this helps.

Bug#470115: apt-get dist-upgrade tries to remove 60+ packages (including apt)

2008-03-15 Thread Paul Higgins
 libstdc++6 (due to apt)

Need to get 14.7MB/49.1MB of archives.
After unpacking 158MB disk space will be freed.

To see if a newer version of apt would help, I then did:
apt-get -u install apt
This updated apt from 0.7.6 to 0.7.11, but the problem was the same when
I tried the apt-get -u dist-upgrade again.

Thanks
