Bug#558852: Resolve unresolved symbols in shared libraries
Charles Plessy wrote: Le Mon, Nov 30, 2009 at 07:32:24PM +0100, Peter Fritzsche a écrit : Source: emboss Version: 6.1.0-4 Severity: wishlist User: peter.fritzs...@gmx.de Usertags: unresolved-symbols-so I build all packages some time ago with binutils-gold and your package build without an hard failure, but I noticed that you seems to provide a library in a specific library package so other packages can link against it without problems but your shared object has still some unresolved symbols which the program which links agaomst it must resolve. This isnt a good idea because when you introduce new dependencies the package previously linked against the old version will break because it doesnt know about the new dependency. Maybe you could link against all needed libraries so programs must not link against libraries which it doesnt need to use. Dear Peter, thank you for your report, and sorry for not anwering on time. My understanding of libraries and linkages is quite weak. Maybe than it is a good idea to forward the bug report to upstream Could you point me at a documentation that explains how to “link against all needed libraries”. Hm, there is no documentation at it is quite simple. Just link against those libraries you are missing. Lets take your package as an example. As I found it using binutils-gold, we may just install binutils-gold. First thing I notice is that the clean target of your package deletes files which are part of the tar.gz (config.guess, config.sub). Thats quite bad when we try to create a clean diff.tar.gz or debian.tar.gz dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol XSetFunction used by debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol XGetVisualInfo used by debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol XOpenDisplay used by debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol XGetGeometry used by debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol XQueryPointer used by debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol XPutImage used by debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol XDestroyWindow used by debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol XStoreColor used by debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol XSetForeground used by debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol XCreateWindow used by debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: 39 other similar warnings have been skipped (use -v to see them all). dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: dependency on libz.so.1 could be avoided if debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 were not uselessly linked against it (they use none of its symbols). dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: dependency on libfreetype.so.6 could be avoided if debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 were not uselessly linked against it (they use none of its symbols). dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: dependency on libjpeg.so.62 could be avoided if debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 were not uselessly linked against it (they use none of its symbols). dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: dependency on libpng12.so.0 could be avoided if debian/emboss-lib/usr/lib/libeplplot.so.3.2.7 were not uselessly linked against it (they use none of its symbols). dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol c_pljoin used by debian/libajax6/usr/lib/libajaxg.so.6.0.2 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol ajStrGetLen used by debian/libajax6/usr/lib/libajaxg.so.6.0.2 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol ajListstrFree used by debian/libajax6/usr/lib/libajaxg.so.6.0.2 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol c_plgspa used by debian/libajax6/usr/lib/libajaxg.so.6.0.2 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol c_plptex used by debian/libajax6/usr/lib/libajaxg.so.6.0.2 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol c_plwid used by debian/libajax6/usr/lib/libajaxg.so.6.0.2 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol ajStrAppendC used by debian/libajax6/usr/lib/libajaxg.so.6.0.2 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol ajStrNewS used by debian/libajax6/usr/lib/libajaxg.so.6.0.2 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol c_plfill used by debian/libajax6/usr/lib/libajaxg.so.6.0.2 found in none of the libraries. dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol c_plschr used by debian

Bug#584522: [libdbus-1-3] Race condition in protected_change_timeout
Package: libdbus-1-3 Version: 1.2.24-1 Severity: important dbus has a race condition in protected_change_timeout which causes different applications like akonadi and other kde applications to crash or to behave strangely (mostly seen on a single core cpu... but happens always). Bug#584157: [korganizer] Reminder doesn't remind anything

I am using akonadi with file backend and birthday backend. I think that events with time associated show normally. Just tried to test it using an event for today (qwe - warn 15 minutes before start; zxc - warn 15 minutes after start) and one event with time associated (warn 2 minutes before start) I tried to use dumpAlarms of dbus org.kde.korganizer.KOrgac and it shows {AlarmDeamon::dumpAlarms() from 2010-06-01T00:00:00+02:00 to 2010-06-01T23:59:59+02:00, asd (2010-06-01T21:39:00+02:00), qwe (2010-06-01), zxc (2010-06-01)} I see a reminder for asd, but still miss the one for qwe and zxc. The problem seems to be that akonadi (at least on debian) isn't finished loading itself and all resource handler when korgac tries the first time to get all alarms since it was closed. See https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=223388 for more information. The only fix which can be done by the user is to _not_ use akonadi resources in korganizer. At least here it works a lot better than automatic starting of akonadi by kde itself. Just tried to test it using an event for today (qwe - warn 15 minutes before start; zxc - warn 15 minutes after start) and one event with time associated (warn 2 minutes before start) I tried to use dumpAlarms of dbus org.kde.korganizer.KOrgac and it shows {AlarmDeamon::dumpAlarms() from 2010-06-01T00:00:00+02:00 to 2010-06-01T23:59:59+02:00, asd (2010-06-01T21:39:00+02:00), qwe (2010-06-01), zxc (2010-06-01)} I see a reminder for asd, but still miss the one for qwe and zxc. --- System information. --- Architecture: amd64 Kernel: Linux 2.6.34-1-amd64 Debian Release: squeeze/sid 500 unstableftp.uni-kl.de 500 unstableftp.debian.org 500 testing ftp.debian.org 500 stable ftp.debian.org 1 experimentalftp.debian.org --- Package information. --- Depends (Version) | Installed =-+-= kdebase-runtime | 4:4.4.3-1 kdepim-runtime| 4:4.4.3-1 libakonadi-contact4 (= 4:4.4.0) | 4:4.4.3-1 libakonadi-kde4 (= 4:4.4.0) | 4:4.4.3-1 libc6 (= 2.2.5) | 2.11.1-1 libgcc1 (= 1:4.1.1) | 1:4.4.4-3 libkabc4 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkcal4 (= 4:4.4.0) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkde3support4(= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-2 libkdecore5 (= 4:4.4.0) | 4:4.4.3-2 libkdepim4 (= 4:4.4.3-1) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkdeui5(= 4:4.4.0) | 4:4.4.3-2 libkholidays4 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkio5(= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-2 libkmime4 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libknewstuff2-4(= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-2 libkontactinterface4 (= 4:4.4.0) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkparts4 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-2 libkpimidentities4 (= 4:4.4.0) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkpimutils4 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkresources4 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkutils4 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-2 libphonon4 (= 4:4.6.0really4.3.80) | 4:4.6.0really4.4.1-2 libqt4-dbus (= 4:4.5.3) | 4:4.6.2-5 libqt4-qt3support(= 4:4.5.3) | 4:4.6.2-5 libqt4-xml (= 4:4.5.3) | 4:4.6.2-5 libqtcore4 (= 4:4.6.1) | 4:4.6.2-5 libqtgui4(= 4:4.5.3) | 4:4.6.2-5 libstdc++6 (= 4.1.1) | 4.4.4-3 phonon| 4:4.6.0really4.4.1-2 zlib1g (= 1:1.1.4) | 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3 perl | 5.10.1-13 Package's Recommends field is empty. Bug#583563: [kaffeine] CAM support has gone
Package: kaffeine Version: 1.0~pre3-3 Severity: important Kaffeine is currently the dvb application of choice on systems were LinVDR isn't the right distributions. But the cam (for dvb encryption) was removed in 1.0 (was there in 0.8.8 and probably before). This makes kaffeine unusable on systems with cam installed (cams must be initialised correctly - but this can be done using `gnutv -cammenu` for fta channels) or at least when they want to use encrypted channels (cam must be informed that we want to decrypt a specific channel). There is cam support again in the current svn version of kaffeine. If the programs just use some structs or other things which are declared in their header then the cflags just looks like before and nothing has changed for them. Or do you mean that there is a gtk_blablubfoo() which just is a define or static inline function in their headers which uses glib_foobar()? It would make gtk+-2.0 an evil library and prevent Requires.private. For example some GTK+ functions return structures or types that are defined in Glib or Pango. Thats ok. Those structure types have nothing todo with symbols which must be resolved by libraries. The header stuff is still exported by --cflags as before - only the third party libraries will not appear using --libs when not using it together with --static. Bug#580343: [kopete] OTR sends xhtml encoded xmpp messages without otr session
Package: kopete Version: 4:4.4.3-1 Severity: normal I use different clients which aren't otr or xhtml-im aware. This means that kopete must not send xhtml encoded messages to these clients. This works perfectly in case the otr plugin is _disabled_. OTR now defines that all data send over it can be (x)html. The problem is that after I enabled the otr plugin (without using otr at all - standard behaviour is opotunistic) it just sends xhtml even when the capabilities of the other clients doesn't support xhtml-im and doesn't supprt otr at all. Message to google mail with otr plugin enabled in kopete: message type=chat to=testacco...@googlemail.com id=239 bodylt;pgt;asdlt;/pgt; /body x xmlns=jabber:x:event offline/ composing/ delivered/ displayed/ /x active xmlns=http://jabber.org/protocol/chatstates/ /message message to google mail with otr plugin disabled in kopete: message type=chat to=testacco...@googlemail.com id=241 bodyasd/body x xmlns=jabber:x:event offline/ composing/ delivered/ displayed/ /x active xmlns=http://jabber.org/protocol/chatstates/ /message This bug is not about problems with miranda's otr plugin because it has more faults than features. It was tested using minimal client implementation and actual user clients like the jabber integration in google mail. All output was checked using xml console. --- System information. --- Architecture: amd64 Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-3-amd64 Debian Release: squeeze/sid 500 unstableftp.uni-kl.de 500 unstableftp.debian.org 500 testing ftp.debian.org 500 stable ftp.debian.org 1 experimentalftp.debian.org --- Package information. --- Depends(Version) | Installed -+-== kdebase-runtime | 4:4.4.3-1 kdepim-runtime | 4:4.4.3-1 libc6 (= 2.3) | 2.10.2-7 libexpat1(= 1.95.8) | 2.0.1-7 libgadu3 (= 1:1.8.0+r592) | 1:1.9.0~rc2-1 libgif4 (= 4.1.4) | 4.1.6-9 libglib2.0-0 (= 2.12.0) | 2.24.1-1 libidn11 (= 1.13) | 1.18-1 libkabc4 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkde3support4 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkdecore5 (= 4:4.4.0) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkdeui5 (= 4:4.4.0) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkdnssd4(= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkhtml5 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkio5 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkmime4 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libknewstuff2-4 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libknotifyconfig4 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkopete4 (= 4:4.4.1) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkparts4(= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkpimidentities4(= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libkutils4(= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libmeanwhile1 (= 1.0.2) | 1.0.2-3 libmediastreamer0 (= 3) | 3.2.1-2 libmsn0.3 (= 4.1~) | 4.1-1.2 libortp8 | 3.2.1-2 libotr2 (= 3.2.0) | 3.2.0-2 libphonon4 (= 4:4.2.0) | 4:4.6.0really4.4.0-4 libqca2 | 2.0.2-1 libqimageblitz4 | 1:0.0.4-4 libqt4-dbus (= 4:4.5.3) | 4:4.6.2-4 libqt4-network (= 4:4.5.3) | 4:4.6.2-4 libqt4-qt3support (= 4:4.5.3) | 4:4.6.2-4 libqt4-sql (= 4:4.5.3) | 4:4.6.2-4 libqt4-xml (= 4:4.5.3) | 4:4.6.2-4 libqtcore4 (= 4:4.6.1) | 4:4.6.2-4 libqtgui4 (= 4:4.5.3) | 4:4.6.2-4 libsolid4 (= 4:4.4) | 4:4.4.3-1 libssl0.9.8(= 0.9.8m-1) | 0.9.8n-1 libstdc++6(= 4.4.0) | 4.4.4-1 libv4l-0 (= 0.5.0) | 0.6.4-1 libx11-6 (= 0) | 2:1.3.3-3 libxml2 (= 2.7.4) | 2.7.7.dfsg-2 libxslt1.1 (= 1.1.25) | 1.1.26-3 phonon | 4:4.6.0really4.4.0-4 zlib1g (= 1:1.1.4) | 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3 Recommends (Version) | Installed ==-+-=== libqca2-plugin-ossl| 0.1~20070904-4 libqt4-sql-sqlite | 4:4.6.2-4 Suggests (Version) | Installed ===-+-=== kdeartwork-emoticons| 4:4.4.3-1 khelpcenter4| 4:4.4.3-1 texlive-latex-base | 2009-8 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#555596: [Fontforge-devel] mensis: FTBFS with binutils-gold
On Saturday 24 April 2010 16:11:52 George Williams wrote: How to do explicitly link against libfreetype6 (or maybe libfontconfig1) library? I've been unable to do so correctly. Well, you are trying to build mensis in a way which isn't really supported. It expects to dlopen freetype rather than link with it, and that's all the Makefile/configure script was written to handle. Ok, in that situation the debian package build with the old GNU ld is broken and doesn't work as you designed the software. Just check out the DT_NEEDED section: $ readelf -a /usr/bin/mensis|grep freetype 0x0001 (NEEDED) Shared library: [libfreetype.so.6] This means that the linker loads libfreetype.so.6 (probably found it by using --as-needed implicit while searching the DT_NEEDED section of other libraries it uses) and will fail to load the program if libfreetype.so.6 cannot be found in the ld library paths by the dynamic linker. Here is for example the ouput when I removed libfreetype.so.6: $ mensis mensis: error while loading shared libraries: libfreetype.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Either your argument is wrong that mensis should only load libfreetype using dlopen or the debian package is broken and added libfreetype.so.6 by accident (including adding the required symbols of libfreetype to the symbols header). Bug#575332: virtualbox-ose-qt linked against libqt libraries from experimental.
Not only when you use stuff from experimental. It is always a good idea to use sbuild or pbuilder/cowbuilder to build your packages before uploading. This is even the case when the binary packages will be stripped from uploads in the future, because you easily see missing dependencies locally. Just install cowbuilder, run `sudo cowbuilder --create` and then start a build with a script similar to #! /bin/sh set -e ID=`/usr/bin/id -nu` GROUP=`/usr/bin/id -ng` /bin/rm -rf $HOME/to_upload/ sudo /usr/sbin/cowbuilder --update sudo /usr/sbin/cowbuilder --build --buildresult $HOME/to_upload $@ sudo /bin/chown $ID:$GROUP -R $HOME/to_upload cd $HOME/to_upload /usr/bin/debsign *.changes (don't forget to change the key-id in debsign). You should add your key id to ~/.devscripts: DEBSIGN_KEYID=12345678 And you may speedup cowbuilder startup using following entries in ~/.pbuilderrc (it will share the apt archives with the host rootfs): BINDMOUNTS=/var/cache/apt/archives APTCACHE= Adding debuild options will still work. For example if you have a -2 version and want to add the source to the tarball then call the script the following way (I just say that it is called buildme and can be found in your $PATH): build-sponsor mypackage_1.0-2.dsc --debbuildopts -sa -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#571722: [libstreamanalyzer0] Always segfaults in gzipendanalyzer
Peter Fritzsche wrote: Package: libstreamanalyzer0 Version: 0.7.1-1 Severity: important I tried to get more information for #571721 directly from strigi-daemon, but it only crashes somewhere else without any further information which file was the problem. I did some tests with xmlindexer -j 1 and noticed that it only happens when having two compressed files after each other. One is called s.tar.lzma and the other one u.tar.bz2. They contain both nearly the same content (customized debian based usermode linux root image and some scripts to use it). It crashes when the bz2 is indexed after the lzma, but _not_ when the lzma is scanned after the bz2. So I duplicated the lzma and the bz2 in two different paths and started to scan them again. Two lzmas didn't cause a crash, but two bz2 crashed. Next step I recompressed the lzma tarball to bz2 and tried again. It didn't crashed everything as expected. So decompressed the old bz2 and recompressed again as bz2. This recompressed u.tar.bz2 and the u2.tar.bz2 still created the crash. Next idea is to use the uncompressed tar u.tar and u2.tar. This time the same crash happened - ok, the backtrace looks a little bit different: #0 0x003a3ec1a549 in Strigi::ArInputStream::checkHeader (data=value optimized out, datasize=value optimized out) at /tmp/buildd/strigi-0.7.1/src/streams/arinputstream.cpp:33 #1 0x003a3e839e1d in Strigi::StreamAnalyzerPrivate::analyze (this=value optimized out, idx=value optimized out, input=value optimized out) at /tmp/buildd/strigi-0.7.1/src/streamanalyzer/streamanalyzer.cpp:419 #2 0x003a3e81f6f4 in Strigi::DirAnalyzer::Private::analyze (this=value optimized out, analyzer=value optimized out) at /tmp/buildd/strigi-0.7.1/src/streamanalyzer/diranalyzer.cpp:121 #3 0x003a3e81fc06 in Strigi::DirAnalyzer::Private::analyzeDir (this=value optimized out, dir=value optimized out, nthreads=value optimized out, c=value optimized out, lastToSkip=value optimized out) at /tmp/buildd/strigi-0.7.1/src/streamanalyzer/diranalyzer.cpp:266 #4 0x00404afa in main (argc=value optimized out, argv=value optimized out) at /tmp/buildd/strigi-0.7.1/src/xmlindexer/xmlindexer.cpp:160 So, I uncompressed u and u2 and checked again. This time it didn't crash. So my I would guess that it is related to the tarball. I am a little bit clueless how to proceed further. So played a little bit more around and decompressed the tarball with tar xvfSp (as root) and recompressed everything as tar xvfSp (as root). This time it started to crash again. So I removed the biggest file in the tarball (root.img) and then recompressed it and copied it to u2.tar this time it didn't crash anymore. So it is probably related to the root.img. So removed the new tarballs and decompressed the old u.tar, removed everything but the root.img, recompressed and duplicated u.tar. This time it crashed again. So the biggest file it the problem which is quite problematic when I want to attach it to a bug report - next test is to reduce the size of the root.img, but first a check if the crash is related to the Sparse tarball by rewriting the file with `dd if=root.img of=root2.img` and then renaming it from root2.img to root.img). This time it didn't crashed So checking it again by copying it back using `cp --sparse=always root2.img root.img; rm root2.img`. It crashed again. So it is maybe possible to reduce the size of the image. Did it with following script: rm -f *.tar sudo tar xvfSp ../u.tar cd umlnetwork dd if=root.img of=root2.img skip=78438 count=203706 cp --sparse=always root2.img root.img rm root2.img cd .. sudo tar cvfSp u.tar umlnetwork rm -rf umlnetwork cp u.tar u2.tar xmlindexer -j 1 I did some tests and i cannot reproduce the bug all the time. Sometimes it runs without any problems and sometimes it crashes. I think it crashed more often with the large archive, but I dont have enough webspace to upload the large version. Just download it in a new directory using wget http: // mitglied.multimania .de/ robertwohlrab/u.tar.xz # remove the whitespaces - otherwise the spamfilter didn't accept the mail unxz u.tar.xz cp u.tar u2.tar xmlindexer -j 1 # had to run ~5 times before i got the first crash I couldn't reproduce the crash when I started it with valgrind (also not with the big file). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#563998: [kmymoney2-plugin-aqbanking] Doesn't work with kmymoney2 in unstable
Package: kmymoney2-plugin-aqbanking Version: 1.0-1 Severity: serious Just opened a kmymoney 1.0.2 file in the current version of kmymoney (3.95.0+svn1069391-2) in unstable. I noticed that update account is disabled for all my accounts I previously attached to aqbanking in kmymoney 1.0.2. I cannot find any aqbanking settings inside kmymoney. So I would think that it doesn't work at all. As this makes it unusable for everyone using it, I mark this bug as serious. --- System information. --- Architecture: amd64 Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 Debian Release: squeeze/sid 500 unstableftp.debian.org --- Package information. --- Depends (Version) | Installed ===-+-== kdelibs4c2a(= 4:3.5.9) | 4:3.5.10.dfsg.1-3 kmymoney2(= 0.9.3) | 3.95.0+svn1069391-2 libaqbanking29 (= 4.0.0) | 4.2.1-1 libart-2.0-2(= 2.3.18) | 2.3.20-2 libaudio2 | 1.9.2-3 libc6(= 2.2.5) | 2.10.2-3 libfontconfig1 (= 2.4.0) | 2.8.0-2 libfreetype6 (= 2.2.1) | 2.3.11-1 libgcc1(= 1:4.1.1) | 1:4.4.2-8 libgwenhywfar47 (= 3.1.0) | 3.11.3-1 libice6(= 1:1.0.0) | 2:1.0.6-1 libidn11(= 0.5.18) | 1.15-2 libjpeg62 | 6b-15 libpng12-0(= 1.2.13-4) | 1.2.41-1 libqbanking8| 4.2.1-1 libqt3-mt (= 3:3.3.8b) | 3:3.3.8b-6 libsm6 | 2:1.1.1-1 libstdc++6 (= 4.1.1) | 4.4.2-8 libx11-6| 2:1.3.2-1 libxcursor1 ( 1.1.2) | 1:1.1.10-1 libxext6| 2:1.0.4-1 libxft2 ( 2.1.1) | 2.1.14-1 libxi6 | 2:1.2.1-2 libxinerama1| 2:1.0.3-2 libxrandr2 | 2:1.3.0-2 libxrender1 | 1:0.9.5-1 libxt6 | 1:1.0.7-1 zlib1g (= 1:1.1.4) | 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3 libaqbanking29-plugins-qt | 4.2.1-1 Package's Recommends field is empty. Bug#558964: Resolve unresolved symbols in shared libraries
Kumar Appaiah wrote: tags 558964 + confirmed thanks Dear Peter, Thank you for notifying us of this. On Mon, Nov 30, 2009 at 07:32:45PM +0100, Peter Fritzsche wrote: I build all packages some time ago with binutils-gold and your package build without an hard failure, but I noticed that you seems to provide a library in a specific library package so other packages can link against it without problems but your shared object has still some unresolved symbols which the program which links agaomst it must resolve. This isnt a good idea because when you introduce new dependencies the package previously linked against the old version will break because it doesnt know about the new dependency. Maybe you could link against all needed libraries so programs must not link against libraries which it doesnt need to use. I agree. More informations can be found at http://wiki.debian.org/qa.debian.org/FTBFS#A2009-11-02Packagesfailingbeca usebinutils-gold.2BAC8-indirectlinking dpkg-shlibdeps already showed you the related warnings: [snip] You've propably linked it with gcc instead of g++. This was happening. However, even after switching to g++, I get several of those warnings. Is there a way I could find out which libraries actually provide those symbols, so that I could just add them to the list of libraries to which I link? Could you suggest of a way I could do this? Install all dependencies and you will probably find it by grepping interesting folders. These are for example /usr/lib, /lib and your build-folder. You can then check with `readelf -s` if they really provide that symbol or just using them. You can use c++filt to read a demangled version of a symbol. _ZNK12EST_Features3valEPKc would be for example EST_String::chop_internal(int, int, EST_String::EST_chop_direction) const. So I would guess that libestools.so.1.2.96 must be linked against libestbase.so. I checked it using `grep -rli _ZNK12EST_Features3valEPKc .` in the current link folder and then checking the found libraries using `readelf -s |grep _ZNK12EST_Features3valEPK` ( readelf shortens output of symbol names to 25 chars!) Output of libestools.so is 254: 0 NOTYPE GLOBAL DEFAULT UND _ZNK12EST_Features3valEPK This means it doesnt provide the symbol, but uses it. Output for libestbase.so is 4185: 000f4510 115 FUNCGLOBAL DEFAULT 12 _ZNK12EST_Features3valEPK 7406: 000f459076 FUNCGLOBAL DEFAULT 12 _ZNK12EST_Features3valEPK So it probably provides this function and another one which has the same suffix. You can also use `nm --demangle=gnu libestbase.so` in some cases to get the complete symbol name. One is _ZNK12EST_Features3valEPKc and the other one _ZNK12EST_Features3valEPKcRK7EST_Val. This translates to EST_Features::val(char const*) const EST_Features::val(char const*, EST_Val const) const Best regards, Peter -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#558769: [mumble] Please add small noise when connected
Package: mumble Version: 1.2.0~beta1-1 Severity: wishlist For human it is normal to hear noise when they are talking over a telephone line. It was normal when analog transmission was used. When no one talks little white noise can be heard. This one is missing if no call is made. This small white noise comes from electric effects during the data transmission over analog channels. When ISDN came to germany this little noise was gone since the whole data transmission to the user was digital. Digital endpoints are in most cases the telephones and so there is nearly no white noise generated anywhere. Most calls in that time by normal users were something like that Hi, John here, Hi here is your grandma. Have you heard that Bob has married. Are you eating enough are you still there? Yes, g'ma I thought you hang up. - the line was dead After a while the manufacturers of digital endpoints added a little white noise. Just use two ISDN telephones, call each other and then hear what sound they make - even if in both rooms is complete silence. This informed grandma that we are still connected and makes both feeling fine - even if grandma is only talking and John takes a nap. The same problem happens now with voice over ip. It seems to be a good idea to add white noise (configurable volume) when we are connected. Bug#557388: [libtool] -Wl,--as-needed is added after libraries
Package: libtool Version: 2.2.6a-4 Severity: normal I tried to add --Wl,--as-needed to the library flags, but it seems that libtool adds this option after the -l arguments and makes it useless (it must stand before the libs and not after them). Is there a workaround or can it be fixed in libtools? I saw different patches which does that, but maybe there is a more elegant way to do it. The actual problem is that `pkg-config --libs gtk+-x11-2.0` isn't really fine grained and adds a lot of extra dependencies I don't use. --as-needed would be a nice way to fix it for me. --- System information. --- Architecture: amd64 Kernel: Linux 2.6.31-1-amd64 Debian Release: squeeze/sid 500 unstableftp.debian.org --- Package information. --- Depends(Version) | Installed -+-=== gcc | 4:4.3.4-1 OR c-compiler | cpp | 4:4.3.4-1 libc6-dev| 2.10.1-7 OR libc-dev | file | 5.03-3 autotools-dev| 20090611.1 Recommends (Version) | Installed ==-+-=== libltdl-dev| 2.2.6a-4 Suggests(Version) | Installed =-+-=== libtool-doc | autoconf( 2.50) | 2.64-6 automaken | gfortran | OR fortran95-compiler| gcj | diff --git a/config/ltmain.sh b/config/ltmain.sh index 0bf3848246321707ac514bb6566691c31aa4f08c..ec8e8d621cbad18b0769f2d32168f137a2765da2 100644 --- a/config/ltmain.sh +++ b/config/ltmain.sh @@ -1807,6 +1807,11 @@ EOF arg=`$echo X$arg | $Xsed -e s/^ //` ;; + -Wl,--as-needed) + deplibs=$deplibs $arg + continue + ;; + -Wl,*) args=`$echo X$arg | $Xsed -e $sed_quote_subst -e 's/^-Wl,//'` arg= @@ -2150,6 +2155,15 @@ EOF lib= found=no case $deplib in + -Wl,--as-needed) + if test $linkmode,$pass = prog,link; then + compile_deplibs=$deplib $compile_deplibs + finalize_deplibs=$deplib $finalize_deplibs + else + deplibs=$deplib $deplibs + fi + continue + ;; -mt|-mthreads|-kthread|-Kthread|-pthread|-pthreads|--thread-safe|-threads) if test $linkmode,$pass = prog,link; then compile_deplibs=$deplib $compile_deplibs

Bug#556951: [binutils] objcopy fails with 'Invalid operation'
forwarded 556951 http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=10982 thanks Matthias Klose wrote: [] `debian/sauerbraten-dbg/usr/lib/debug//usr/lib/games/sauerbraten/sauer_cl ient': Invalid operation dh_strip: objcopy returned exit code 1 Is this a known problem with binutils-gold? yes, I did see this as well recently. Could it be that it is new with 2.20-3 or 2.20-4? I think I didn't saw that in earlier version. I think I saw it the first time when compiling batctl - which I compiled right after update of my Sources file. This was after the 11. November. I wanted to write a bug report right now but haven't a glue why it fails. objcopy --only-keep-debug debian/batctl/usr/sbin/batctl debian/batctl-dbg/usr/lib/debug//usr/sbin/batctl seems to work without any problems. The real problem is objcopy --add-gnu-debuglink debian/batctl-dbg/usr/lib/debug//usr/sbin/batctl debian/batctl/usr/sbin/batctl So a small test would be: $ echo 'int main() { return 0; }' test.c \ gcc -g3 test.c -o test \ objcopy --only-keep-debug test test.dbg \ objcopy --add-gnu-debuglink=./test.dbg test echo cool it works objcopy:stCdJOm4: cannot create debug link section `./test.dbg': Invalid operation This works with the old linker, but not with binutils-gold So I build the cvs version of the linker and objcopy and it is the same here. So it is propably an upstream bug. Best regards, Peter -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? However I am slightly concerned that this policy is opposite to another one that say to never link binaries against library they do not use directly, to avoid spurious dependencies. Of course the two policies are complementary, but I am afraid that fixing packages to link with gold will lead maintainers to link with more libraries than strictly required (because it is not always obvious) and to add spurious dependencies to packages. To explain it further. The policy says something like: Hey, don't link to libxyz when you arent using it. And binutils-gold says.. hey link to libabc if you are using it. So it is completely unrelated. So it would be best if both checks were consolidated somehow into a single one with the exact list of library to add. Building with binutils-gold and checking output of dpkg-shlibdeps is the exact test you suggests. Thanks for the fast processing of this bug I have tested this with both standard binutils and passing LDFLAGS=-Wl,--no-add-needed to configure and installing binutils-gold and both produce a correct build as far as I can tell (passing --no-add-needed with binutils-gold doesn't work BTW). Yes, this is getting a problem as some packages started to use it - which will fail as it doesn't allow to change that value. I will submit a patch which accepts this flag and ignores it. Bug#554695: FTBFS with binutils-gold
Helge Kreutzmann wrote: [...] From what I've gathered from here, you introduced a new linker and found that it does not link many programmes linking with the standard linker. I haven't heard of it before, nor was it mentioned as (possible) release goal (IIRC, correction welcome). And about the only advantage seems to be the avoidance of certain classes of possible errors, where I don't know how common they are. Correct. It is not a release goal, but the linker can be (misused) to show some common failures when linking programs. So it is more a QA bug - if you want to change it to wishlist then do it. In your case it is only that upstream forgot to link against libX11 even if they use symbols from that library. Dmitry E. Oboukhov wrote: Goldendict are built by qt4-qmake. I think that You should report about such projects in qt4-qmake package, because just qt4-qmake generates linker call command. I think that it is the same as packages which are under automake/autoconf. As others have said it before: these tools don't magically find dependencies. So it is a user who specified it and in most cases not in auto* or *make, but in a external script/config file. This means either the package author of the broken package or the author of the (for example) pkg-config file has to correct it. So it is correct that not always the broken package is the reason for that problem. You buried me with the same bugs, but only one really touched my package. I think You should find out which specific a package has a bug before submit bugreports. I expect ~600 broken packages. I don't have really time to check in detail what is broken. I do a quick check if it looks like this is the fault of the package and not the build system, but I cannot create patches for every problem. I am really sorry if I submit a wrong bug. To show you that this is probably real a broken config file I attached you a patch which fixes this packages. I would feel better if it would use pkg- config or something similar, but I don't know qmake4 good enough to find how to use it correctly. And the problem is only that it uses for example XKeysymToKeycode in hotkeywrapper.cc:305 which is defined by libX11.so `readelf -s /usr/lib/libX11.so|grep XKeysymToKeycode` - but doesn't link to it correctly. For example: fluxbox is built with autotools. goldendict is built with qt4-qmake. Do You suggest me to patch all these packages? You don't have to fix these things. A report back to the upstream author would be everything I expect from a maintainer. If he real fixes it by himself - wow, that's wonderful, but I don't force anybody to do that. Yes, this is more the fault of the old GNU ld which is used by most distributions right now (like Ubuntu 9.10). It has a quite messy way of finding the symbols, but there are different other linkers around used by other Unix systems and maybe GNU gold will replace the old ld in the future on Linux too. As this didn't happened yet it is a minor bug for Debian right. Thanks for fixing it right now. I think that it is just a matter of time until the transition will happen.
