Bug#890034: Backport of Perc 740/840 for Stretch
We have some spare hardware with a H740P installed. Would having access to the IDRAC to run some tests help? -Original Message- From: Moritz Muehlenhoff Sent: 14 September 2018 11:38 To: 890...@bugs.debian.org; 890...@bugs.debian.org; 891...@bugs.debian.org; 891...@bugs.debian.org Cc: cui...@lenovo.com; doru.iorgules...@gmail.com; vdanj...@debian.org; Phil Lavin Subject: Backport of Perc 740/840 for Stretch Hi, I've pulled a number of upstream commits for the megaraid_sas driver which add support for the Perc 740/840 RAID controllers to the Stretch kernel. Successfully tested with a H840 on a current Dell PowerEdge R440 and I've also tested the built kernel on a system which was previously supported by the megaraid_sas driver (LSI MegaRAID SAS 2008 (Perc H310 Mini)) and that continues to work fine as well. Test debs (I'd appreciate more tests on MegaRAID controllers, the 740 should be identical to the 840 except that it allows for less drives) are at https://people.debian.org/~jmm/perc/ Merge request at https://salsa.debian.org/kernel-team/linux/merge_requests/61 Cheers, Moritz
Bug#890034: comment on 890034
Thanks for updating the issue, Salvatore. The motivation behind raising the bug was to ask that the driver be backported to 4.9. Dell's Gen 14 hardware with Perc H740P has only been around a few months and, given that Debian 10 is a fair way away from being released, I suspect that there will be a raft of users wishing to install Debian on this hardware in the not so distant future who will be unable to do so without manually compiling and loading the driver from Dell into both the installer and the installed OS. If a bug isn't the right way to request a backport, can you advise how it should be done?
Bug#890034: linux-image-4.9.0-5-amd64: No driver support for Perc H740P RAID Controller
Package: src:linux Version: 4.9.65-3+deb9u2 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, Latest Debian 9.3 does not have support for Perc H740P RAID controllers. The megaraid_sas module likely needs to be updated. I believe it is supported from kernel 4.11 on Debian and it works correctly on latest Debian 10. These controllers ship with new generation (Gen 14) Dell servers. The drivers that Dell supply for SUSE compile and work correctly on Debian, though it makes the install process, kernel upgrades, etc. extremely involved. It would be desirable that support for H740P be backported into Debian 9. The Ubuntu bug is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1683587. Although it is "Won't Fix", it does work in Ubuntu LTS. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 4.9.0-5-amd64 (debian-ker...@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 6.3.0 20170516 (Debian 6.3.0-18) ) #1 SMP Debian 4.9.65-3+deb9u2 (2018-01-04) ** Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.9.0-5-amd64 root=UUID=2e6a0e7c-a8d2-4ce4-a8d5-d1a130839c44 ro elevator=noop quiet ** Tainted: O (4096) * Out-of-tree module has been loaded. ** Kernel log: [4.215460] lpc_ich :00:1f.0: I/O space for ACPI uninitialized [4.215461] lpc_ich :00:1f.0: No MFD cells added [4.225119] [drm] Initialized [4.225364] sd 0:2:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0 [4.225867] sd 0:2:1:0: Attached scsi generic sg1 type 0 [4.230103] input: PC Speaker as /devices/platform/pcspkr/input/input1 [4.233447] random: crng init done [4.240972] [TTM] Zone kernel: Available graphics memory: 65842056 kiB [4.240973] [TTM] Zone dma32: Available graphics memory: 2097152 kiB [4.240973] [TTM] Initializing pool allocator [4.241070] [TTM] Initializing DMA pool allocator [4.274062] fbcon: mgadrmfb (fb0) is primary device [4.389808] EXT4-fs (sdb1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Further confirmed that installing fam and libfam0 solves the problem: apt-get install fam libfam0 I have previously also experienced the check for configuration errors with the FAM/Gamin library bug which does not seem to have reoccurred after installing fam. Phil

Bug#467002: proftpd: fails to install
I have had both installed for a long time however this issue only started after I did an apt-get dist-upgrade the other day and proftpd failed with the same error. Phil
