Bug#380191: installation-report Beta2 AMD64 3200+

During detecting CD it stopped at 98% and displayed an error-message, that the RELEASE-files are missing. If I tried to detect the CD again, it failed entirely, because the DVD-ROM would not be detected any more. Got the same results in 3 boot-ups. Oh, I used the 2.6-kernel and tried the standard mode twice and the expert-mode once. The DVDROM is connected to the first IDE-port as master. Although I don't think it matters (because I never came to the point where the harddrive is detected): the harddrive is connected via SATA. The computer seems farely new. Debian-Installer Beta2 is about 5 months old and I guess about 7 months old in kernel. Please try again with a recent version of debian-installer. Is has a newer kernel (which handles the hardware detection) Visit http://www.nl.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ for download locations. Please report your milage. Took me some time, because I wanted to ahve some free hours before starting. Trying to use newer version failed two times. But I believe it was due to incompatibilities between DVD-writer and DVD-reader. I cannot be sure, but I don't believe my original problem (see above) was also due to those problems, because in that case I got no error message saying read error. In my last two tries, I got such a message. Instead of trying it again, I finally tried a netinstall-Version of Beta3, because it fits onto a CD (expected no read errors). This worked without problem, installation report see below. Consider doing another install in about two weeks, Beta3 is then available. Because it took me so long for my next try, I kind of did that. ;-) Greetings, Ralf Laue If you are not the right person to send this installation report to, please forward it. Thanks. Bug#350104: Installation via USB-stick
Package: installation-reports Boot method: USB-stick Image version: January 25th 2006 http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso Date: January 26th 2006 appr. 22.30 until 0.30 o'clock (time zone Germany) Machine: Desktop-tower, Motherboard Asus A8N-E Processor: AMD64 3200+ Memory: 1GB Partitions: don't have it right now, but can try to get it, if needed; but I don't think there were any problems with the harddrive Output of lspci and lspci -n: unable to do, system not running Base System Installation Checklist: [O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it Initial boot worked:[O] Configure network HW: [O] Config network: [O] Detect CD: [O] Load installer modules: [O] Detect hard drives: [O] Partition hard drives: [O] Create file systems:[O] Mount partitions: [O] Install base system:[E] Install boot loader:[ ] Reboot: [ ] Comments/Problems: During install of base system, I got following error message: Couldn't download package e2fslibs The same message was repeated for packages: e2fsprogs, findutils, libblkid1, libcomer2, libsasl12, libss2, libuuid1 After that the mounting of /proc/ failed an the installation stopped. I repeated the process with different servers in Germany as installation sources. Always the same results. I do not believe, that there was some problem with the network connection, but cannot be sure. I used the the boot image from (download date as above): http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/images/daily/hd-media/boot.img.gz and used the easy way from http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch04s04.html to get the data on my USB-stick. By the way: I had a kubuntu (5.1) installation on the same partition before but wanted to install the debian instead of it (formatting the partition with the debian installed). After I gave up on isnatlling debian that day, the grub boot manager missed some files of the deleted kubuntu installation. To repair that, I installed kubuntu again and encountered no problems. Unfortunately, I didn't think about storing the /var/log/syslog anywhere. But I'm not entirely sure, whether I would be able to do this, as my system has no floppy and the emergency shell is quite limited. If you think it is important, I can repeat the installation and try to get the information. I think that's all, Greetings Ralf Laue -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
