Bug#464191: Sound broken with linux-image-2.6.24-1-686

2008-02-12 Thread Rob Bochan
So now I've got to recompile my kernel just to have sound?
How nice. I haven't had to do that since about 1998. I guess this is good
enough reason as any to remove Debian from my laptop. Sad too, it's been
Debian since before Woody was released.

With the upgrade to linux-image-2.6.24-1-686, sound no onger works on this

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to this, life got in the way. I just now
removed the libglide3 packages, and sure enough, X crashed when I attempted
to run glxinfo. Reinstalling libglide3 stopped the crashing.

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.2-5

Package: xserver-xorg-video-tdfx
Version: 1:1.3.0-1

Bug#392223: recurring events are missing when kontact is restarted

2007-03-12 Thread Rob Bochan
Some more info:
If I don't set the recurring event to M-W-F, but set up a separate event for
each of the 3 days (and have them recurring weekly), the events are shown
properly even after a restart of Kontact. If I do try to set a single
recurring event to M-W-F, the previously described behavior returns.

Bug#405126: xfe: feature request - eject

2006-12-31 Thread Rob Bochan
Package: xfe
Version: 0.88-3.1
Severity: wishlist

Xfe is a fine file manager. It is, however, lacking one feature that would
make it an excellent file manager: the ability to eject media (cd, dvd,
etc.). The included mount/unmount funtions seem lacking without the ability
to eject media as well.

 It's an optional configuration file.

Okay.

  I wasn't previously aware there was a libglide3, and don't
recall it being any sort of dependency for the tdfx driver.

 See bug #387339.

Fair enough.

I just installed libglide3 and ran the same command (attached

 That's bug #326099/#329920.

I also temporarily commented the AIGLX line from my xorg.conf, that you

Yeah, it's still falling back to indirect rendering without a working
Glide. It's possible that a working Glide would also fix the AIGLX crash
with indirect rendering, in which case this would be another duplicate
of the libglide3 bugs above, but I'm just changing the title for now.

Considering the age of those, I doubt there will be any sort of resolution
before the kids show up next week for LAN games over the holidays :o(

Since these packages are also now in Etch, I guess I don't have much of a
choice but to go back to Sarge until they're resolved. I'm no coder, but if
there's anything at all I can do to help, I'd be glad to do what I can.

Bug#403969: xserver-xorg: xserver crashing, mode related?

2006-12-21 Thread Rob Bochan
On Thursday 21 December 2006 01:46, you wrote:

Please provide a log file from a crash

See attached (console.log), which contains everything I could see at the
console after attempting to run glxgears. Using tail on Xorg.0.log file shows
the same exact output from a second crash from glxgears.

and the output from LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo

I've tried this several times, but the only thing I can get to dump to a file
is:

name of display: :0.0

since I keep getting dumped back to the console, and I can't run glxinfo from
there to get more info. I've attached the Xorg.0.log from that crash. If you
know of a way I can provide more info, I'll do whatever I can.

Some notes that may or may not be relevant:
- The crashing doesn't seem to occur on everything running under
winex/cedega. I am able to successfully run an old copy of Irfanview and
Forte Agent. Running Diablo 2 crashes the X server.
- I am also noticing the crashes whenever I try to run any applications under
wine (tested Forte Agent and Irfanview mentioned above, and IE6).
- Crash occurs if I try to access the OpenGL section of KDE's KInfoCenter.
- I'm also noticing some other artifacts from within KDE, like system tray
icons blinking (not because of activity) and slow scrolling with apps like web
browsers.
- All this behavior is present with root as well as normal users.

Bug#403969: xserver-xorg: xserver crashing, mode related?

No they do not, though I had to add that section to the xorg.conf manually.
The glxgears and glxinfo programs run, as do some of the wine programs
mentioned above, but not the game via winex.
The output of
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo
is attached (glxinfo.log).

  No they do not,

Then apparently the tdfx 3D driver is incompatible with AIGLX.

though I had to add that section to the xorg.conf manually.
The glxgears and glxinfo programs run, as do some of the wine programs
mentioned above, but not the game via winex.

This might be due to the lack of direct rendering.

Okay, what can be done about this? Things were working well before I'd
restarted my X session yesterday. Like I mentioned previously, I hadn't
restarted it in quite a while, even though I'd noticed some xorg upgrades
over the last month or so. Mostly because I had been bitten by this bug:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=389781
previously, and I'm now a bit paranoid about not having a properly working x
server.

  The output of
  LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo
  is attached (glxinfo.log).

The stderr output is missing, so it's not clear why direct rendering is
 not being used.

If you can tell me how to get that to you, I'd be glad to do so.

Bug#403969: xserver-xorg: xserver crashing, mode related?

2006-12-20 Thread Rob Bochan
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.1.0-9
Severity: important

The xserver on this machine is crashing. So far, it's happening whenever
I've tried to run a winex/cedega based game, tried to run glxgears, or tried
to call up glxinfo. Whenever any of the aforementioened are attempted, I'm
dumped back to the console (since I use startx). This has come up today, but
I haven't restarted the xserver in well over a month.

Bug#400266: iceweasel: strange close functionality

2006-11-24 Thread Rob Bochan
Package: iceweasel
Version: 2.0+dfsg-1
Severity: wishlist

Before the transition from Firefox--Iceweasel, hitting ctrl+w would close
the firefox window when only one tab was open. This is no longer the case.
Now, the sequence is ctrl+shift+w, or having to use the file menu. Using
ctrl+w works properly(closes the window) when Always show tab bar is
UNchecked in the Tab Preferences dialog, so there's a discrepency there. At
least in my case, the old behavior is preferred.

Bug#397512: fvwm95 has nothing when it starts

2006-11-07 Thread Rob Bochan
Some more info. I was just able to get fvwm95 to start properly, but I had to
reconfigure locales, adding all the EN_US entries available (as per bug
#278775). This was a fresh netinstall of Etch, and the default locales setup
apparently doesn't allow fvwm95 to start properly, so I don't know if this is
an issue with locales or fvwm95.

I've set up a recurring event (every M W F). If I restart Kontact, the event
doesn't show up on the calendar, due to the start date showing as being
after the begin date. This behavior occurs on every recurring event I've

Bug#388645: akregator sends wrong message type to KDE

2006-09-21 Thread Rob Bochan
Package: akregator
Version: 4:3.5.4-1
Severity: minor

When deleting articles from within akregator, a message window asking:
Are you sure you want to delete the selected (#) articles?
pops up. It's asking a question, however it triggers the A Warning
message is being shown sound from the KDE System Notifications. There
is no way to turn off the verification to remove the article (which
would be _really_ nice), and other than setting the KDE System
Notifications to use no sound for it's warning function, there's no
other way to stop this behavior. It's minor, but also quite annoying.

Bug#386000: xlibs uninstallable/missing from Sid

2006-09-04 Thread Rob Bochan
Package: xlibs
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I'm using Sid. While installing a 3rd party package, xlibs, on which it is
dependent,
wasn't installed. Upon attempting to install xlibs, I received the
following message:
Package xlibs is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source.

Searching http://packages.debian.org shows a listing for xlibs
( http://packages.debian.org/unstable/libs/xlibs ) and a link to download
the file, however, the file doesn't exist on any of the download pool links.

Out of curiosity, then why is there still an Unstable package page for it at
packages.debian.org? Also, I was able to manually download the package
version that's still in Experimental (so a package does still exist) and
satisfy the dependency with that.

Bug#385890: pan: New version loses 'per group' threading and doesn't keep layout

2006-09-03 Thread Rob Bochan
Package: pan
Version: 0.110-1
Severity: normal

With this latest version of Pan Newsreader in Sid, I've lost the ability to
thread headers on a 'per group' basis. With previous versions, I was able to
thread one group via author, another group via subject, and others via date.
This new version threads everything based on what was last chosen, regardless
of the group.
Regarding the layout, this new version doesn't save the layout spacing and I
have to resize the groups pane, header pane, and message pane every single
time I use Pan. i.e. I can't set the panes to a specific size and have those
sizes there after Pan closes.

Bug#367308: azureus: strange config behavior, no transfers

2006-05-14 Thread Rob Bochan
Package: azureus
Version: 2.4.0.2-1
Severity: important

Just updated to Azureus 2.4.0.2-1, I can't transfer anything. The seeds and
peers columns show peers, but nothing connected. This is the case whether
or not I use my existing config, or start fresh.
Also, this new version has created 2 directories in the user's home:
..Azureus
and
..azureus
I don't know if that has anything to do with the lack of transfers. I
temporarily removed those 2 directories, and they were recreated upon reopening
azureus.

This issue seems to be remedied with the update from Tue, 25 Apr 2006 to

FYI, when the new Xorg packages came in and I had no X at all, I purged all
the X related packages in an attempt to get X working again - a 'fresh
start', if you will. I would imagine that's why I have no xserverrc, which
would have been left over from the previous versions, since it's no longer
included in xbase-clients. I have no idea if the non-inclusion is intentional
or not.

Yep, since I first installed the machine with a Woody base and dist-upgraded

consistent up until the Xorg 7.x packages were introduced last week. That's

OK, the log files are long gone, but I do have the previous xorg.conf backed
up. The only differences in the new config file that I'm seeing are 1) a lack
of GLcore in the modules section, and 2) the new section pertaining to the
Synaptics Touchpad which has been giving me fits as well(see bug #363363).

No, this shows *startx* being passed -dpi 100, not the X server. Try

 startx -- -dpi 100

OK, now that I have the syntax correct, I can startx properly with 100 dpi.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ps ax |grep x
 5068 tty1 S+ 0:00 /bin/sh /usr/bin/startx -- -dpi 100
 5085 tty1 S+ 0:00 xinit /home/rbochan/.xinitrc -- /usr/bin/X -dpi
100 -auth /home/rbochan/.serverauth.5068

However, why am I having to add the dpi switch to the startx command now,
after all this time (2+ years) running Sid on the machine without having to
do so before? It has _always_ defaulted to 100 dpi previously, even when
XFree86 was still in the rotation.

file /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc, which startx uses, contained the

Perhaps this has changed in Xorg 7.x?

Good eye!
Looks like it has. That file doesn't exist on the machine in question, but it
still exists on my machine which I haven't yet updated (and does indeed
include the switch mentioned). Also, according to a search at
packages.debian.org
http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?word=xserverrcsearchmode=searchfilescase=insensitiveversion=unstablearch=i386
the file xserverrc doesn't exist in any packages in Sid.
xbase-clients (from which that file originates in Sarge and Etch) no longer
contains that file, and I have no idea what might 'replace' it nor am I
familiar enough yet with all the new Xorg things to figure how to mimic it's
previous behavior short of having to add the switch manually to the startx
command - every time I use it.

I remember previously having to remove the -dpi 100 manually,
because I wanted to specify the actual resolution in the configuration
file. I never understood why the Debian default setting was to
override anything specified in the server configuration file, so if
this default command-line argument was removed in Xorg 7, I'm
personally quite happy with the change. However, perhaps it should be
documented, e.g., in the NEWS file? (I don't know if it already is, I
haven't looked at the 7.x packages yet.)

I just did, and I saw no mention of the changed/missing xserverrc file in any
of the changelog/NEWS files for xserver-xorg, xserver-xorg-core, or
xbase-clients

Another possibility would be to ask for the resolution when the X
packages are configured, and write this out to the auto-generated X
 server configuration file.

I'd agree, that would probably be well fitted to the advanced options during
the initial and reconfiguring.

I think the proper place to configure the resolution should be the
server configuration file, since that contains all the other
information about the monitor (such as the supported frequencies, if
they are not autodetected), and since (I think) the server
command-line arguments need to be specified in multiple files (at
least previously, xserverrc applied only to startx and, for example,
xdm had its own configuration file where the server command-line
options could be specified - I don't know if this has changed
 recently).

Nor do I.

There is no response from the attached PS/2 mouse whatsoever... no movement,

dpkg-reconfigure has had no effect. The mouse still works properly on the

 BTW, is xserver-xorg-input-synaptics installed?

Yes, though I originally had to install it manually because it wasn't included
with the xserver-xorg-input-all meta package (which apparently has been
remedied). X wouldn't start at all without it, complaining about the missing
synaptics driver.

This was not the case before these new packages, at least according to the KDE
KInfocenter X-Server section. It always showed 100x100 dpi previously, now it
shows 75x75 dpi. I haven't done the updates on my desktop machine, which
clones my laptop install, and it still shows 100x100 dpi. Both machines are
using startx instead of a login manager. Adding the -dpi switch to the startx
command also has no effect.

Also, is the difference actually in the DPI value as reported by
xdpyinfo, or could it just be that the 75 DPI bitmap fonts now precede
the 100 DPI ones in the font path?

xdpyinfo output is attached.

The 100 dpi fonts precede the 75 dpi fonts in the xorg.conf:

Bug#363363: xserver-xorg: Lost ability to use external PS/2 mouse

2006-04-19 Thread Rob Bochan
On Wednesday 19 April 2006 08:50, you wrote:

As you're running a 2.4 kernel, the PS/2 mouse is probably represented
 by /dev/psaux instead of /dev/input/mice.

I just tried that per your advice, and though X was able to start, neither the
mouse nor the synaptics touchpad responded at all.
Xorg complained about:

(EE) Synaptics Touchpad no synaptics touchpad detected and no repeater device

This was also in the log file you posted. Does the touchpad work if you

Yes, when using that setting, the touchpad works fine. Neither /dev/input/mice
nor /dev/psaux for the mouse setting gets the mouse functioning again, and as
in my previous reply, /dev/psaux for the mouse setting actually stops the
touchpad from working as well.

Bug#363359: xserver-xorg: Resolution has changed from 100 dpi, to 75 dpi

2006-04-19 Thread Rob Bochan
On Wednesday 19 April 2006 10:07, you wrote:

Again, this must have been either due to the driver obtaining additional
 information, e.g. via EDID,

I have no idea how to figure that out. If you can tell me, I'd be glad to
provide any additional information that I can.

or due to configuration, either via the
DisplaySize directive in the xorg.conf Monitor section or via the -dpi
 command line switch.

I don't see that directive in my xorg.conf (using the advanced options for
monitor setup via dpkg-reconfigure):
Section Monitor
Identifier Omnibook LCD
Option DPMS
HorizSync 30-60
VertRefresh 50-75
EndSection

Weird, the command line switch should always override anything else.
Have you confirmed that the switch is actually passed to the X server,
 e.g. using ps?

ps info from the laptop:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ps ax |grep x
1002 tty1 S+ 0:00 /bin/sh /usr/bin/startx -dpi 100
1018 tty1 S+ 0:00 xinit xterm -dpi
100 -- -auth /home/rbochan/.serverauth.1002
1076 ?S 0:00 xfe

Seems to show it properly, but the fonts are still small, and KInfocenter
still shows 75x75 dpi.

is rather unpleasant on a 13.5 inch laptop screen (HP Omnibook 6000).

Bug#358646: xserver-xorg: X fails to start leaving no access to keyboard or mouse

2006-03-23 Thread Rob Bochan
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-5
Severity: important

Since the 6.9.x versions of xserver-xorg and its related packages, X fails
to start whenever I try to start X (manually or via login manger). This
locks the keyboard and mouse, leaving no local access to the machine
what-so-ever, short of a hard-reboot. Remote access is still possible.

Reverting the 49 or so packages to the 6.8.2x versions allows X to start
normally.

Video card is a 3Dfx Voodoo5.

Bug#358646:

2006-03-23 Thread Rob Bochan
Some more info, I don't know if it helps, but here it is:

When the aforementioned behavior is present, upon reboot of the machine, I
just noticed that the system clock had reverted to the last time I'd had a
clean reboot of the machine. In this case, it had set itself back about 10
hours.

Subject: Debian Bug report logs - #345815 kmymoney2: default geometry too
large for screen
Date: Wed, 1 Feb 2006 20:59:06 +0100

Please upgrade to 0.8.2. The problem has been fixed there.

0.6.4 will not be maintained anymore.

Regards

Thomas Baumgart

Excuse me?
You're telling that a package version in Sarge will not be maintained any
longer?
Is this a Debian policy?
Short of using testing/unstable or going to 34rd parties, just how would one
upgrade to 0.8.2 when it's not even available in Sarge?

Bug#345815: kmymoney2: default geometry too large for screen

2006-01-03 Thread Rob Bochan
Package: kmymoney2
Version: 0.6.4-1
Severity: important

Using kmymymoney2, the default geometry will not allow the entire window to
be on the screen, or allow it to be resized, no matter the screen
resolution, rendering it basically unusable without customizing settings.
Setting customized fonts to _very_ small settings allow it to
finally be visible.
