Bug#838635: fp-utils-3.0.0: Installation of an outdated version of listings.sty

2016-09-23 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: fp-utils-3.0.0
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Dear Maintainer,
I just found out that after installing free pascal, some of my LaTeX slides
stopped compiling
properly.

After some work, it turns out that the reason is the presence of this file,
installed by fp-utils-3.0.0 in
a LaTex path I still use

/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/fpc-3.0.0/listings.sty

This is an horribly outdated version of the listings LaTeX package (dates back
to 2002 according to the header), that misses many of the features used in
modern version, hence breaking LaTeX compilation of unrelated files.

I did not investigate further, and just removed all of free pascal: you might
want to look at why such a file is present, and find a way to reach the same
objectives without breaking the rest of the LaTeX distribution

Cheers

Bug#820709: konqueror: No file view, only file size view is available!

2016-04-11 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: konqueror
Version: 4:15.08.3-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,
the current version of Konqueror only offers the File Size view, Cervisia
View and File Search view.
The usual file view/icon view/compact view modes have disappeared.

This makes Konqueror next to useless on the desktop, and since many other
application try to open directories using Konqueror, they become severely
hindered too.

This bug is extremely similar to the one reported 6 years ago here:
http://www.aptosid.org/index.php?name=PNphpBB2=viewtopic=18031 I hope
this provides some useful information

Bug#819594: totem: Actually, unable to play *any* file!

2016-04-10 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: totem
Version: 3.18.1-2+b1
Followup-For: Bug #819594

Dear Maintainer,

I confirm this bug is present, and renders totem useless: we cannot play any
video file any more.
To reproduce, just run totem whatevervideoyouhave and you will immediately see
it.

Looking around, it seems this bug comes from a bad interaction with components
of gstreamer, see

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1300125

and in particular

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=760234

This appears to be fixed in RedHat now: may we get a fix in our preferred
distribution too? :-)

Bug#794110: plasma-workspace: plasmashell segmentation fault (11) every few minutes (and restarted)

2016-03-15 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: plasma-workspace
Version: 4:5.4.3-2
Followup-For: Bug #794110

Dear Maintainer,
I confirm the bug is still present. Plasmashell crashes randomly, and,
particularly annoyingly, it
kills all konsole instances that were open at the moment of the crash, so after
it is relaunched one looses the content of all open terminals.

I also find sometimes several instances of plasmashell running after a few
crashes.

This is making the desktop environment close to unusable, as most time is spent
restarting/resetting the environment instead of working.

A release fixing all this would be much appreciated.

Yes, I have seen there is a new one in experimental, but I am going to wait for
it to reach testing before giving it a try.

Bug#694155: nvidia-vdpau-driver:amd64: Only native resolution on DFP available with recent NVidia driver version

2013-10-22 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Dear Andreas,
I have tested 304.88 and am currently using 310.19-0, and everything
stays the same: I just got used to fiddle with the ViewPortIn and Panning
values to get the required resolution on the internal screen, and I had
to do some nitty gritty tricks to supersed the driver's now strict checks
on EDID, that prevent it to work with overhead projectors connected
through long VGA cables :-(

Unfortunately, this is really an upstream change, apparently, and I believe
Debian cannot do anything about it, so it's fine to close the bug, and
I apologize for the noise.

Bug#699495: ocamldsort breaks with recent versions of ocamldep

2013-01-31 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: ocamldsort

the 4.00 release of OCaml comes with a version of ocamldep that outputs

Bug#694155: nvidia-vdpau-driver:amd64: Only native resolution on DFP available with recent NVidia driver version

2012-11-25 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
After careful investigation, this issue comes from
an upstream design decision in the 3xx driver series.

In this new series of the NVidia driver, for reasons
that completely escape my understanding, the user
is directly exposed to the (powerful) details of
the inner working of the GPU pipeline, like
RasterSize, ViewPortIn, ViewPortOut etc. See
the following url for more explanations from
one of the driver's programmers.

http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2012-September/096933.html

A positive consequence is that one is now free to
program arbitrary zoom/rotation/panning on any
display device.

The negative consequence is that if you want *just*
to adapt your LCD resolution to that of an external
beamer to show your slides in clone mode, you are
now going to have to play with these parameters which
are way more obscure than the traditional 1024x768
modes that did show up in nvidia-settings with pre-3xx
drivers.

For example, I have to click on the Advanced button
in the X server display configuration window, and then
type 1024x768 in the ViewPortIn and Panning fields, and
leave alone the ViewPortOut field.
[I checked this functionality on the 310 version in
experimental, where it is supported properly; it did
not seem to work on the 304.60-1 driver, which is no
longer relevant anyway]

Did not find out how to do the same using xrandr yet.

A good tutorial on how to get the basic old functionality
with these new features would be a big plus.

I only get native resolution for the internal display
on my laptop, which was not the case before.

This is particularly annoying, as it is no longer
possible to use the laptop in clone mode when
giving a presentation.

Bug#689323: apt: Broken EDSP generation: some dependencies and provides are silently dropped

2012-10-01 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: apt
Version: 0.9.7.5
Severity: important

Recent changes in edsp.cc lead to dropping relevant metadata
in the EDSP passed to apt-cudf: this may render the solution provided
by the external solvers unusable, as dependencies and conflicts
are missing.

As an example, see the difference among the EDSP dump obtained using
two versions of apt, withthe command

apt-get -s install texlive -o APT::Solver::Strict-Pinning=false --solver
dump

The file /tmp/dump.edsp-0.9.7.5-old-edsp is produced by apt version 0.9.7.5
compiled using the version of edsp.cc present before revision 1327.106.19,
and correctly contains the same info as that contained in the Packages files.

The file /tmp/dump.edsp-0.9.7.5 is produced using the stock apt version 0.9.7.5,
and it drops all or part of conflicts, replaces, breaks metadata (only en
excerpt
of the differences is shown).

Bug#668027: ocaml-batteries-included: Lots of mismatches between what the documentation says and what the package does.

2012-04-08 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: ocaml-batteries-included
Version: 1.4.1-1
Severity: important

The documentation included in libbatteries-ocaml-doc does not correspond
to what the libraries actually do, and what the packages contain: it really
needs a thorough check.

Please do not underestimate the importance of fixing just some documentation:
in the current state, a developer will simply not find a way to use these
packages,
unless he/she has a friend in the Batteries developer's team.

A few examples:

 /usr/share/doc/libbatteries-ocaml-doc/html/setup.html says:
To use batteries in the ocaml toplevel, install ocamlinit from the batteries
source directory into your ~/.ocamlinit file and launch ocaml normally

but there is no ocamlinit to be found in any of the three batteries packages

 /usr/share/doc/libbatteries-ocaml-doc/html/toplevel.html says:
To launch the toplevel from a terminal, open a terminal and write ocamlfind
batteries/ocaml

but here is what happens if one tries
 ocamlfind: Cannot find command: /usr/lib/ocaml/batteries/ocaml

 /usr/share/doc/libbatteries-ocaml-doc/html/extensions.html says:
where construction (activated by default, implemented as findlib package
batteries.pa_where.syntax)

but there is no findlib package batteries.pa_where.syntax to be found on the
system!

After looking more into the issue, it seems that list_data
 disappears because
  i) the Debian package configure the code without the --expldir option
 _and_ with the fhs option
ii) in the upstream source, in configure.ac, when choosing fhs, the
value of expldir does not contain the list_data subdirectory

Bug#639627: sympa: comes from upstream

2011-08-30 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: sympa
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

After looking more into the issue, it seems that list_data
disappears because
 i) the Debian package configure the code without the --expldir option
_and_ with the fhs option
ii) in the upstream source, in configure.ac, when choosing fhs, the
value of expldir does not contain the list_data subdirectory

Hence, it seems that this nees fixing upstream, but I hand in a
one line patch to allow testing the results (to test, you need
to configure at least one virtual robot).

Bug#633084: sympa: dh_fixperms -X called with the link to the program, instead of the path to the program

2011-08-30 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: sympa
Severity: normal

In the package building process for sympa, it is necessary to maintain the
setuid bits
for a certain number of files, more precisely

chmod 4755
/tmp/buildd/sympa-6.1.4~dfsg/debian/sympa//usr/lib/sympa/lib/sympa/queue
chmod 4755
/tmp/buildd/sympa-6.1.4~dfsg/debian/sympa//usr/lib/sympa/lib/sympa/bouncequeue
chmod 4755
/tmp/buildd/sympa-6.1.4~dfsg/debian/sympa//usr/lib/sympa/lib/sympa/familyqueue
chmod 4750 aliaswrapper
/tmp/buildd/sympa-6.1.4~dfsg/debian/sympa//usr/lib/sympa/bin/aliaswrapper
chmod 4750
/tmp/buildd/sympa-6.1.4~dfsg/debian/sympa//usr/lib/sympa/bin/virtualwrapper
chmod 6755
/tmp/buildd/sympa-6.1.4~dfsg/debian/sympa//usr/lib/cgi-bin/sympa/wwsympa-wrapper.fcgi
chmod 6755
/tmp/buildd/sympa-6.1.4~dfsg/debian/sympa//usr/lib/cgi-bin/sympa/sympa_soap_server-wrapper.fcgi

to achieve this result, the current package source usese -X options to
dh_fixperms, as follows

 dh_fixperms -psympa -X /usr/lib/sympa/bin/queue -X
/usr/lib/sympa/bin/bouncequeue

unfortunately, the files /usr/lib/sympa/bin/queue and
/usr/lib/sympa/bin/bouncequeue are just links to
/usr/lib/sympa/lib/sympa/queue and /usr/lib/sympa/lib/sympa/bouncequeue, so the
setuid are not preserved

One should use

 dh_fixperms -psympa -X /usr/lib/sympa/lib/sympa/bouncequeue -X
/usr/lib/sympa/lib/sympa/queue \
 -X /usr/lib/sympa/lib/sympa/familiqueue -X
/usr/lib/sympa/bin/aliaswrapper \
 -X /usr/lib/sympa/bin/virtualwrapper -X
/usr/lib/cgi-bin/sympa/wwsympa-wrapper.fcgi \
 -X /usr/lib/cgi-bin/sympa/sympa_soap_server-wrapper.fcgi

Bug#639627: Wrong value for EXPLDIR in Constants.pm

2011-08-29 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: sympa
Severity: normal

Some more information on the bug reported above: apparently EXPLDIR is
not set in the configuration option, and I found in
 sympa-6.1.4~dfsg/debian/rules
the following line
# We cannot configure --with-expldir: upstream use uppercase X in subdir

So maybe this is what needs to be fixed.

Bug#639627: sympa: Wrong value for EXPLDIR in Constants.pm

2011-08-28 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: sympa
Severity: important

The sympa package in Debian uses the wrong value for EXPLDIR in Constants.pm;
per sympa documentation about virtual hosts, this directory must be the
list_data
subdirectory of the sympa data directory, see
http://www.sympa.org/manual/virtual-hosts

For the Debian configured package, this would mean

 /var/lib/sympa/list_data

Instead, the Constants.pm file shipped with all versions of the sympa package I
could check
contains the line

   use constant EXPLDIR= '/var/lib/sympa';

This is a significant deviation from the architecture of the file system used
in sympa upstream,
and has two major negative effects:

 - it renders the official documentation useless: I spent several hours
tracking down this
issue, and I am sure any other user willing to exploit sympa's virtual hosts
facility
   will have a similar headache;

 - it has potential dangerous consequences: the /var/lib/sympa/list_data must
only contain
   virtual host domains, and the sympa code iterates on the files therein;
/var/lib/sympa
contains a lot of other data unrelated to virtual hosts

I would suggest checking carefully where this erroneous configuration comes
from (looking
at the sources of the modified Debian sympa I could not find where list_data
disappears)

Bug#620236: ocamldsort only handles dependency lines with trailing blanks; breaks with recent versions of ocamldep

2011-03-31 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: ocamldsort
Version: 0.14.4-2+b2
Severity: important
Tags: patch upstream

The old code in dep_parse.ml only works properly on lines which are
terminated by a space; this error has gone unnoticed for years, since
ocamldep did produce a trailing space on each dependency line.
Recent version of ocamldep do not do this any longer, so the bug
is now apparent to anybody using ocamldsort.

You can verify this situation yourself by testing as input a file

toto.cmo: toto.ml

with or without a trailing blank.

It is enough to fix the parse_source parser as shown in the attached
patch to correct the error.

Bug#616604: xserver-xorg: Precise information on nvidia 3100M / Dell latitude E6510 X problem after fresh squeeze install.

2011-03-29 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.5+8
Severity: normal

I confirm that a fresh squeeze install on a Dell Latitude E6510 with Nvidia NVS
3100
leaves the user with a machine booting into a blank screen, which makes the
system
pretty unusable.

This is due to the fact that
 - the default module used to handle the Nvidia card is 'nouveau'
 - nouveau is configured by the installer by default with modeswitch enabled
 - the version of nouveau shipped with squeeze has serious problems with this
   Nvidia card

The workaround is the following:

 - manually edit the boot line under grub to add the option

nouveau.modeswitch=0

this will allow you to boot into a workable machine with a decent Vesa
support

 - once there, you can install the proprietary nvidia driver by

apt-get install nvidia-glx

To be on the safe side, the Debian installer should configure machines with the
NVS 3100M
with this option for the kernel by default.

I hope it helps

--Roberto

[By the way, I am experiencing very unsatisfactory suspend/resume even with the
proprietary
Nvidia driver, and tried to update to a more recent kernel, that shows up in
the information
below, which is not the information one would get after a fresh install.
Please consider this report valid only against the stock version of X and the
kernel installed by a fresh squeeze.]

Bug#614765: liboss-salsa-asound2: dependencies problems with libasound2

2011-03-19 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
liboss-salsa-asound2 tries to provide a replacement to libasound2
by declaring a Provides: libasound2 and a Conflicts: libasound2

Unfortunately, 1889 packages in squeeze absolutely need (we say 'strongly
depend on' [2]) the real package libasound2, and not the virtual one
(because the declared dependencies are versioned); actually, for the
same reason, a total of 2531 packages are incompatible (we say
'strongly conflict' [1]) with liboss-salsa-asound2.

On the other hand, there is *no* package that strongly depends on
liboss-salsa-asound2, so the problem is with liboss-salsa-asound2,
and not with the other packages.

I may humbly suggest one of two solutions:

 - either drop liboss-salsa-asound2

 - or change the metadata by simply allowing liboss-salsa-asound2 to
overwrite files belonging to libasound2 (if this is enough that
/usr/lib/libasound.so.2 is the one contained in this package for
   everything to work fine)

Hope this helps

Bug#618270: advi: Missing dependency on ghostscript-x

2011-03-13 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: advi
Version: 1.9.0-1+b1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

On a freshly installe Debian squeeze, installing advi does
not bring in ghostscript-x.

As a consequence, just typing advi starts with the following warnings:
 Warning: Unknown device: x11
Warning: Unrecoverable error: undefined in .uninstallpagedevice
 Warning: Operand stack:
 Warning: defaultdevice
and advi blocks on an empty blank page.

Bug#600447: Non UTF8/En locales bug reappeared (renders hplip useless for non US/UTF8 users)

2010-10-17 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: hplip
Version: 3.10.6-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

In 3.10.6-1 there is still a serious issue with CUPS *requiring* either
an US-ASCII locale, or a UTF8 locale. As a consequence, all programs
communicating with CUPS to discuver printers/install printers, and the
like, fail miserably with errors of various kind, like hp-setup not
finding the printer (#515720), or not finding the proper PPD files, hp-clean
complaining that there is no printer, etc.

These extra errors *all* come from the inability of the hplip tools
to communicate properly with CUPS, because the locale forces an
encoding of the messages in a format that CUPS refuses to interpret.

According to what is said in #471228, CUPS is not going to change this
behaviour, so hplip needs to do either:

 * be patched to convert everything to UTF8 no matter what the user's
locale is, as done in hplip-2.8.12-force-utf8.patch submitted by
   Tiago Salem Herrmann (ref: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162196)
that was used in 3.9.2, but is gone in 3.10.6-1

 * or at least pop up a warning box if it detects a non UTF8 locale
telling the user that it will not work with CUPS without an UTF8 locale
(and saving the user, the Debian maintainers, and a lot of other
people a sizeable amount of time)

Bug#494506: aptitude: Additional example usage justifying this feature request

2010-05-19 Thread Roberto Di Cosmo
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.6.2.1-2
Severity: normal

When functionality from a package P is merged into a new package Q, and
the user erroneusly requests to install Q, aptitude should warn the user
that downgrading Q to install the old P is possibly not necessary.

As an example, baobab from etch has been merged into gnome-utils in Lenny,
as can be seen by the metadata Replaces: and Conflicts:, so asking to
install baobab can lead to downgrade gnome-utils, breaking gnome, and
autoremoving hundreds of packages, when actually no action was really
required.
