Thank you Jeff for your persistent effort in tracking down the bug. It has given me a workaround to run gscan2pdf. As advised, I will raise a separate request for libsane. As you are using Ubuntu, I suggest you raise a bug against the libsane package: https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=libsane
