Bug#769187: general: Entries in system log for failed services refer to FreeDesktop.ORG for support
Package: general Severity: normal I use Virtualbox to run test environments for the packages I maintain (just a few really). I install virtualbox-guest-utils in my guest installations to adjust system clock after hibernation. In Jessie, there seem to be a problem with the virtualbox guest service. It fails to start and, as usual, I look in the system log for clues. Now, as a DD I am of course very much aware of the highly debated change in Jessie to a new default init process. I have had no strong feelings about this so far, other than that in general, as a user, I very much value the freedom of choice. That is why I choose to use free and open source software when available in the first place. Any way, back to the failed start of the virtualbox service. I went to the system log for clues, in this case using 'journalctl -x'. To my surprise, where ever there was a problem reported, there was also a reference to systemd-devel mailing list at FreeDesktop.ORG for support. In my particular case it looked like this: // log extract begins nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd sudo[1429]: tomfa : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/tomfa ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/sbin/service virtualbox-guest-utils start nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd sudo[1429]: pam_unix(sudo:session): session opened for user root by tomfa(uid=0) nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd virtualbox-guest-utils[1447]: Starting VirtualBox AdditionsNo suitable module for running kernel found ... failed! nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd virtualbox-guest-utils[1447]: failed! nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd sudo[1429]: pam_unix(sudo:session): session closed for user root nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd systemd[1]: virtualbox-guest-utils.service: control process exited, code=exited status=1 nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd systemd[1]: Failed to start LSB: VirtualBox Linux Additions. -- Subject: Unit virtualbox-guest-utils.service has failed -- Defined-By: systemd -- Support: http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/systemd-devel -- -- Unit virtualbox-guest-utils.service has failed. -- -- The result is failed. nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd systemd[1]: Unit virtualbox-guest-utils.service entered failed state. // log extract ends I don't understand why there should be a reference to an external support entity when the issue obviously is Debian related and should be reported as such in Debian-related forums. My specific issue has nothing to do with systemd or FreeDesktop.ORG. I want the external reference removed. If it stays it will only create confusion and misunderstanding. Thank you for your consideration. The package was not orphaned at the time of adoption. As for documenting a formal adoption agreement in the changelog; I have not seen any policy that mandate this. I can understand your question from a transparency point of view; But I have not found any Debian documentation that make this a requirement. * Closes: #314856: Missing pre-dependency on debconf. Anyway, back topic: if you have removed the upgrade path, then please note it in the changelog. The wording you have used leads to thinking that you've just added the pre-dependency on debconf, which is not the case. It's very useful to have changelog entries with detailed information of what changes were done to fix a certain bug. There never was an upgrade path. The debconf stuff in preinst should never have been there. I don't know the history behind this exactly, but I'm pretty sure it was a leftover from sqlite 2.x, which exist in parallel and lives it's own life. The upgrade path is all about sqlite 2.x, not sqlite 3.x. As for putting more detailed information in changelog; If I had made an actual addition or removal I would surely have mentioned it in the changelog. In this case, I considered it to be a minor cleanup and choosed not to comment it any further beside the reference to the bug report. Until then, I'd suggest, you let the security team know, that your package has local versions due to above mentioned reasoning. So they can decide, what to do, if and when those packages have issues. Quick note: This is an example of what a package maintainer have to deal with when upstream is linking an application against their own versions of libraries which are also available as shared objects in the same distribution. Some time after filing the bug, I finally found out some details of the local changes, and I have some possible ideas to get them done in other ways: * sqlite: As I understand, there's only an addition. - It might be put in an extra .c, so that it's only used in monotone. - The code using it might be rewritten to use a loop with sqlite3_prepare (It's not faster than sqlite3_exec, as that uses the former.) Is Elrond's suggestion an acceptable solution? Of course, the sqlite changes should be proposed to upstream for inclusion. But it is not currently possible according to upstream. I should have mentioned this in more detail in the changelog, so thanks for pointing this out. Yep, that would have been helpful. Maybe better put this into a README.Debian or TODO.Debian. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Javier Kohen skrev: Package: rdesktop Version: 1.4.1-1 Severity: normal RDesktop seems to grab the keyboard in a weird way while it's running. On one hand, it grabs alt-tab before the window manager which is useful, but on the other hand, it's a bit agressive. If the connection is lagging or gets disconnected (for some reason the window is not always closed), you lose all ability to use the keyboard. The only way I found to restore the keyboard to normal in this case is to kill rdesktop or wait until the connection gets back to normal (only if it wasn't lost, but severely lagged). I expect that a lost connection or a slow network won't prevent me from typing in my local system once I take the focus away from rdesktop. Hello Javier Thank you for reporting this problem. On the contrary; with the exception of packages that depend on C++ libraries that are currently going through the ABI transition, plus the odd compiler regression (there are some, but they're mostly architecture-specific), packages most definitely *are* expected to be buildable in unstable right now. Of course. I stand corrected. I think what I wanted to say was that it didn't surprised me that the transition was causing intermediate build problems for this package. However, it happens that monotone depends on one of the libraries currently in transition (boost), and it looks like the build failure is actually caused by a gcc 4.0 compatibility issue with the C++ headers provided by boost itself. (Maybe the temporary license for his machine expiread around the same time he upgraded rdesktop) I can't see where 1.4.0 could have introduced such a behaviour which was not present in 1.3.1. The last posting also shows that the second poster may not have enough licenses on his W2K-AS, but if he checks out a license from his W2K-Server he can successfully use it with the AS. Bug#307412: ITP: dbxml -- a native XML database

Vyas skrev: On Tue, 3 May 2005, Jay Berkenbilt wrote: I'm not entirely surely this is the same package, It looks like the same one. but I seem to recall Jaldhar Vyas may have been working on this. Just FYI in case there's some duplication of effort. This has come up in some xerces-related discussions before. Yes off and on I was working on it but I never filed an ITP so Tomas is welcome to it. I'd be happy to help if help is needed. Ok, and thanks for the offer. The reason for me to file an ITP for dbxml is that I need it to be in sarge or at least sarge+1, and would spend time on packaging issues anyway, since we use apt-get extensively to distribute in-house software and configuration. By the way, I did try to look for earlier dbxml work in the debian mailing lists to be sure before filing the ITP, but apparently missed the xerces-related discussions. - -- Tomas Fasth [EMAIL PROTECTED] GnuPG KeyId: 0x9FE8D504 Fingerprint: DC7B 9453 7F26 1BF9 6B21 9F90 C187 7355 9FE8 D504 -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFCd6agwYdzVZ/o1QQRAquXAJ41JnAfiLMCMHEcsUyt6LMSiwmVbgCgl54F gOz5tUReiWlQankxdf5onhA= =+PwU -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#307182: rdesktop unusable with non-ASCII Windows username
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello Rémi, Can you verify that your rdesktop specific keyboard map is set accordingly? If it is not specified as a '-k' command line argument the default is en-us (a US keyboard), as stated in the man page. Also please verify your X environment keyboard configuration. May be the keymapping.txt documentation file for 1.4.0 can give you some guidance. The first couple of paragraphs reads: Keyboard mapping This release of rdesktop uses a new, portable keyboard mapping implementation. It should hopefully work on all X11 systems. This new implementation only looks at X11 keysyms: Not on (nonportable) keycodes or modifier status. This means that rdesktop will obey your local keyboard configuration. For example, if you have swapped CapsLock and Control, rdesktop will use this mapping. XKB is currently not used. It seems like a good idea to me, but since some X servers (like Xvnc) does not support XKB, we still need to use the plain old interface as well, at least. There are still some small problems. * CapsLock: CapsLock changes are never sent to the RDP server. rdesktop does not know which keys that are modified by CapsLock and which are not. So, the CapsLock indicator in Wordpad etc will always be off.
