Hello Amadeusz,
I can verify that your patch is working for me. I built a new Debian
package with your patch and installed it locally. The screen executable
is no longer crashing.
I have put the Debian bug report on CC to notify the Debian maintainer
of the existence of this patch.
Thank you for your quick action and for a great and much appreciated
piece of software!

Bug#769967: virtualbox-guest-utils: Starting VirtualBox Additions No suitable module for running kernel found ... failed!

2014-11-17 Thread Tomas Fasth
Package: virtualbox-guest-utils
Version: 4.3.18-dfsg-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I have two Debian installations running as guests in a VirtualBox installation.
One is stable, the other one testing. Both have virtual-guest-utils and
virtual-guest-dkms packages installed.

In stable the host time sync works, in testing it does not. Here is what can be
found in the system log after an attempt to start the virtual-guest-utils
service:

// log extract begins
nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd sudo[1429]: tomfa : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/tomfa
; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/sbin/service virtualbox-guest-utils start

opened for user root by tomfa(uid=0)
nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd virtualbox-guest-utils[1447]: Starting

control process exited, code=exited status=1
nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd systemd[1]: Failed to start LSB: VirtualBox

// log extract ends

It seems like the vboxguest kernel module is not loading correctly.

Please give advice on possible workaround or if you need further details.

Thank you for providing these packages. Looking forward to a solution.

Bug#769187: general: Entries in system log for failed services refer to FreeDesktop.ORG for support

2014-11-11 Thread Tomas Fasth
Package: general
Severity: normal

I use Virtualbox to run test environments for the packages I maintain
(just a few really). I install virtualbox-guest-utils in my guest
installations to adjust system clock after hibernation.

In Jessie, there seem to be a problem with the virtualbox guest service.
It fails to start and, as usual, I look in the system log for clues.

Now, as a DD I am of course very much aware of the highly debated
change in Jessie to a new default init process. I have had no strong
feelings about this so far, other than that in general, as a user, I
very much value the freedom of choice. That is why I choose to use free
and open source software when available in the first place.

Any way, back to the failed start of the virtualbox service. I went to
the system log for clues, in this case using 'journalctl -x'. To my
surprise, where ever there was a problem reported, there was also a
reference to systemd-devel mailing list at FreeDesktop.ORG for support.

In my particular case it looked like this:

// log extract begins
nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd sudo[1429]: tomfa : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/tomfa
; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/sbin/service virtualbox-guest-utils start

nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd sudo[1429]: pam_unix(sudo:session): session
closed for user root
nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd systemd[1]: virtualbox-guest-utils.service:
control process exited, code=exited status=1
nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd systemd[1]: Failed to start LSB: VirtualBox

--
-- The result is failed.
nov 10 01:36:47 debian-systemd systemd[1]: Unit virtualbox-guest-utils.service
entered failed state.
// log extract ends

I don't understand why there should be a reference to an external support
entity when the issue obviously is Debian related and should be reported
as such in Debian-related forums. My specific issue has nothing to do
with systemd or FreeDesktop.ORG. I want the external reference removed.
If it stays it will only create confusion and misunderstanding.

Thank you,

Hello Thomas,

Thanks for considering Algol 68 Genie for the Debian archive.

Until now a68g could make do with the homebrew configure script, but the
way you are using it leaves only one option: upgrading the package to a
full GNU implementation. I think this is the logical step to take now. I
will upgrade version 2.1.0 to the GNU build system.

I will keep you posted.

Best regards,
Marcel

 Hello Marcel

My name is Tomas Fasth. I am a Debian Developer taking on the task of
bringing your algol 68 genie implementation into the Debian archive.
When I tried to build algol68g version 2.0.3 for Debian Sid (unstable)
64-bit version I ran into a problem with the provided ./configure
script. I use the tool dpkg-buildpackage. Here is the last part of the
 output:

 CFLAGS=-g -O2 -g -Wall -O2 CXXFLAGS=-g -O2 -g -Wall -O2 CPPFLAGS=
 LDFLAGS= /tmp/buildd/algol68g-2.0.3/./configure

I understand that your version of ./configure does not support the
--build option with an argument of 'x86_64-linux-gnu'.

Debian tools support standard GNU automake and autoconf tools.
Are you planning to upgrade your configure script to a full GNU
 implementation?
Do you have any advice how to resolve this issue so I can move forward?

 Thanks

Bug#335544: rdesktop: Copy/paste doesn't work in fullscreen

2005-10-25 Thread Tomas Fasth
There is a registered bug (1198945) at sourceforge about a clipboard
problem. It doesn't mention anything about full-screen mode, so I
decided to register a new bug. The request is:

Project: rdesktop
Request ID: 1336997
Summary: Copy/paste doesn't work in fullscreen
Open Date: 2005-10-25 06:40

Clipboard functionality (copy/paste between the RDP
session and X) works ok in default - windowed mode.

In full-screen mode (e.g. rdesktop -f server) it doesn't.

This bug was reported in Debian by Robert Trebula. The
report can be found at

I change the severity of this bug to 'important' because I don't
consider it grave. The problem you reported only occur after
activating the 'composite' extension, and, as you found out
yourself, deactivating the extension again makes the problem to

Hello David,

I am not sure Content Manager is a good description, may be
Information Manager is closer to what it seem to target. For me,
content management is about structure and appearence, not calendar
events and instant messaging.

I also think it could serve the presumtive user better if you
rewrite the short description in this way:

: Web-based Personal Content Manager System written in PHP

or may be even better (because of what it seem to target)

: Web-based Personal Information Management System written in PHP

Just a thought.

Thank you for pointing this out. It seem to me that the debconf

taken from the ancestor sqlite 2.x source package, which, by the
way, still lives its own life in Debian. I will make a new upload
with this stuff removed completely.

Adeodato Simó skrev:
Thanks to you for adopting a package (though I don't see any orphaning

Thank you for your consideration. The package was not orphaned at
the time of adoption.

As for documenting a formal adoption agreement in the changelog; I
have not seen any policy that mandate this. I can understand your
question from a transparency point of view; But I have not found any
Debian documentation that make this a requirement.

   * Closes: #314856: Missing pre-dependency on debconf.

Anyway, back topic: if you have removed the upgrade path, then please
note it in the changelog. The wording you have used leads to thinking
that you've just added the pre-dependency on debconf, which is not the
case. It's very useful to have changelog entries with detailed
information of what changes were done to fix a certain bug.

There never was an upgrade path. The debconf stuff in preinst should
never have been there. I don't know the history behind this exactly,
but I'm pretty sure it was a leftover from sqlite 2.x, which exist
in parallel and lives it's own life. The upgrade path is all about
sqlite 2.x, not sqlite 3.x.

As for putting more detailed information in changelog; If I had made
an actual addition or removal I would surely have mentioned it in
the changelog. In this case, I considered it to be a minor cleanup
and choosed not to comment it any further beside the reference to
the bug report.

Thank you for caring.

Thank you for reporting this bug. I finally tracked the source of
the unwanted behavior to the configure script. Here's the patch I

sed that misbehaved. Somehow the brackets was removed somewhere
between interpretation and execution which gave the unwanted effect.
I will of course communicate this upstream.

Usually, when the connection trouble starts, the rdesktop window just

 Good!

Until then, I'd suggest, you let the security team know,
that your package has local versions due to above mentioned
reasoning. So they can decide, what to do, if and when
 those packages have issues.

Quick note: This is an example of what a package maintainer have to
deal with when upstream is linking an application against their own
versions of libraries which are also available as shared objects in
the same distribution.

Some time after filing the bug, I finally found out some
details of the local changes, and I have some possible
ideas to get them done in other ways:

 * sqlite: As I understand, there's only an addition.
   - It might be put in an extra .c, so that it's only used in
 monotone.
   - The code using it might be rewritten to use a loop with
 sqlite3_prepare
(It's not faster than sqlite3_exec, as that uses the
  former.)

Is Elrond's suggestion an acceptable solution?

Of course, the sqlite changes should be proposed to
 upstream for inclusion.

But it is not currently possible
according to upstream. I should have mentioned this in more detail
in the changelog, so thanks for pointing this out.

Yep, that would have been helpful.

Maybe better put this into a README.Debian or TODO.Debian.

 (while there: /usr/share/doc/monotone/README currently does
not give any vital information to the user, really)

RDesktop seems to grab the keyboard in a weird way while it's
running. On one hand, it grabs alt-tab before the window manager
which is useful, but on the other hand, it's a bit agressive. If
the connection is lagging or gets disconnected (for some reason
the window is not always closed), you lose all ability to use the
keyboard. The only way I found to restore the keyboard to normal
in this case is to kill rdesktop or wait until the connection
gets back to normal (only if it wasn't lost, but severely
 lagged).

I expect that a lost connection or a slow network won't prevent
me from typing in my local system once I take the focus away from
 rdesktop.

Hello Javier

Thank you for reporting this problem. I have not been able to
reproduce it myself, though. I have therefore presented your problem

Apperently you are not allowed to use certain characters, in your

Domain Names in Applications and is defined in RFC 3490. ACE stands
for ASCII Compatible Encoding and LDH is an abbreviation for

On the contrary; with the exception of packages that depend on C++ libraries
that are currently going through the ABI transition, plus the odd compiler
regression (there are some, but they're mostly architecture-specific),
packages most definitely *are* expected to be buildable in unstable right
 now.

Of course. I stand corrected. I think what I wanted to say was that
it didn't surprised me that the transition was causing intermediate
build problems for this package.

However, it happens that monotone depends on one of the libraries currently
in transition (boost), and it looks like the build failure is actually
caused by a gcc 4.0 compatibility issue with the C++ headers provided by
boost itself. It would be good to test this again once the new upstream
version of boost is in the archive.

I will do that.

good reason why. The upstream author writes the following comment:

Isn't this name too generic for such a specific use? Why not
mlenctools, mlencrypt or similar?

The URL is redirected to an https page written in italian. I could
not find any reference to the described tools, may be because of my
limited knowledge in italian. So, where is the upstream source?

This is the first version I have used of rdesktop. I don't know if the
behavior is present in earlier versions, sorry.

Rdesktop version 1.4.0 is available in sarge (testing). It would be
of much value if you could do the extra trouble to download and
install the version in sarge from a public debian archive to verify
if the behavior is the same or different. I recommend to uninstall
version 1.4.1 first, though.

Thanks

My question to this list is; Is the problem reported above known to
the list? Any one who have experienced the same problem? I can't
reproduce the problem myself. Any help is appreciated.

I have not seen such a problem with rdesktop 1.4.0.
To me this sounds like Windows terminalservers running out of
licenses or old invalid licenses stored in ~/.rdesktop.
(Maybe the temporary license for his machine expiread around
the same time he upgraded rdesktop)

I can't see where 1.4.0 could have introduced such a behaviour
which was not present in 1.3.1.

The last posting also shows that the second poster may not have
enough licenses on his W2K-AS, but if he checks out a license from
his W2K-Server he can successfully use it with the AS.

Ok, and thanks for the offer. The reason for me to file an ITP for
dbxml is that I need it to be in sarge or at least sarge+1, and
would spend time on packaging issues anyway, since we use apt-get
extensively to distribute in-house software and configuration.

By the way, I did try to look for earlier dbxml work in the debian
mailing lists to be sure before filing the ITP, but apparently
missed the xerces-related discussions.

My plan is to build dbxml using the Berkeley DB and Xerces libraries
as provided in debian. I am not sure though, what to do about pathan
and xquery. I could build them as separate binary packages and make
them visible to other developers. Or, I could just hide them within
the dbxml package. What do you think?

Bug#307182: rdesktop unusable with non-ASCII Windows username

2005-05-01 Thread Tomas Fasth
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello Rémi,

Can you verify that your rdesktop specific keyboard map is set
accordingly? If it is not specified as a '-k' command line argument
the default is en-us (a US keyboard), as stated in the man page.
Also please verify your X environment keyboard configuration.

May be the keymapping.txt documentation file for 1.4.0 can give you
some guidance. The first couple of paragraphs reads:

Keyboard mapping

This release of rdesktop uses a new, portable keyboard mapping
implementation. It should hopefully work on all X11 systems. This
new implementation only looks at X11 keysyms: Not on (nonportable)
keycodes or modifier status. This means that rdesktop will obey your
local keyboard configuration. For example, if you have swapped
CapsLock and Control, rdesktop will use this mapping.

XKB is currently not used. It seems like a good idea to me, but
since some X servers (like Xvnc) does not support XKB, we still need
to use the plain old interface as well, at least.

There are still some small problems.

* CapsLock: CapsLock changes are never sent to the RDP
server. rdesktop does not know which keys that are modified by
CapsLock and which are not. So, the CapsLock indicator in Wordpad
  etc will always be off.
