Bug#296201: closed by Roger Leigh (Closing mtab-related bugs)

2012-01-10 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Roger,
Thanks, I've been waiting for this for awhile! One question: Will the
'mount' update process delete an /etc/mtab and replace it with a symlink? I
certainly hope so!

Bug#647772: gnome: Josselin Moutte shrugs off bug reports

2011-11-05 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: gnome
Version: 1:3.0+3
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

I just reported bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=647768
which is a serious issue with the debian system. This happened after a
reboot of a single system and I am afraid to reboot the rest of the fleet as
a result in fear that our knowledge and culture may be lost forever.

Instead of addressing this concern and providing and/or fixing a clean
upgrade path, Josselin has closed the previous bug with a shrug. A "shrug".
This seems to indicate that not only GNOME, but the entire debian system is
broken, and that more breakage is on the way. What can we do to avoid such
cascade failure across the whole planet?

Bug#635604: also,

2011-07-30 Thread Tyler MacDonald
one of my NICs remembers it's mac addresses between reboots... so i'm having
to look up the old one in my routers' leases to put things right. it took
hours to debug this because hacing multiple systems with the same MAC on the
same network is *never* supposed to happen. wrecked my day. :-(

Bug#635604: dnet-common borked my network

2011-07-30 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Dominique Dumont,

I don't think it is sufficient that the dependancy be resolved. I
just upgraded two hosts on my network, as a result dnet-common got
installed on both. I was aked "configure, don't configure, or leave it
alone". I chose "leave it alone", and guess what -- both hosts on my
network were given the same mac address.

There was absolutely no indication of this. Not only did my hosts
lose their assigned IP's, the entire network broke because this
package got installed.

Changing mac addresses is kind of a big deal. You can't just do it
when somebody picks a default configuration option of "not right now".
The dnet-common package needs to be fixed to never, EVER change
somebody's MAC address unless they explicitly consent to this action.

I tried this workaround in debian squeeze and I was able to mount my iPhone

Bug#608973: mysql-client-5.1: tab completion attempting to complete wrong object type

2011-01-04 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: mysql-client-5.1
Version: 5.1.49-3
Severity: normal

Current behaviour:

When attempting to call a stored procedure, the MySQL client's tab
completion provides table and column completions, but does not provide tab
completion for the stored procedure.

Expected:

When issuing "CALL", completions should be stored procedure names, and
table/column names should /not/ be available as completions because they are
invalid in this context.

I haven't tested stored functions or other objects, but they may suffer from
the same ailment.

To reproduce:

mysql> CREATE TABLE tab_complete (a int);
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.09 sec)

mysql> CREATE PROCEDURE tab_complete_procedure () LANGUAGE SQL SELECT 1;
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.03 sec)

mysql> CALL tab_complete
tab_completetab_complete.a

On the statement line, I have pressed "tab" twice to show all available
completions.

  Thanks,
 Tyler

Instead, I have to pick "Always display an icon" and then click on the
dropdown to see that my celphone is charging.

"Charging or discharging" should definitely apply to celphones, etc. I'm not
100% sure about "when a battery is present"... but really, that setting only
makes sense on desktops for the sake of external chargable devices.

   Thanks,
 Tyler

Bug#588171: audacious: on song change, moves playlist selection to currently playing song

2010-07-05 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: audacious
Version: 2.3-2
Severity: minor

When a new song starts playing, audacious will change the playlist selection
and focus to be the currently playing song. This is uneccessary and
annoying; when I'm editing a playlist while listening to music, I have to
stop at the end of a song, wait for the next song to start playing, then
find where I was. This is especially annoying when editing via keyboard, or
when I am in the middle of selecting several songs to move/delete.

Bug#581889: posgresql-8.3: cannot purge after it has been removed

postgresql-8.3 was removed by incident of postgresql-8.4 being installed.
sysvrc wants me to purge 8.3 so i can move to a dependency-based boot. however,
"apitutude purge postgresql-8.3" renders this error message:

Can you fix this in the package so future versions dont have this problem? I'm

Bug#567675: mysql-server: MySQL Bug #49479: Slave stops with syntax error: LOAD DATA event without escaped field names

2010-01-30 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: mysql-server
Version: 5.1.41-3
Severity: important

Replication is basically broken in this version of MySQL;

http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=49479

If a table contains a field name that must be escaped (eg, `key`
INT), loading data into that table, using LOAD DATA INFILE, will
break replication.

If logging in mixed or statement mode, the master will binlog a
LOAD DATA event without escaping the field names. Consequently,
the slave will stop with a syntax error:

Last_SQL_Error Error 'You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the
manual that
corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near
'key, c2)' at
line 1' on query. Default database: 'test'. Query: 'LOAD DATA INFILE
'../../tmp/SQL_LOAD-2-1-1.data' REPLACE INTO TABLE `t` FIELDS TERMINATED BY
'\t'
ENCLOSED BY '' ESCAPED BY '\\' LINES TERMINATED BY '\n' (key, c2)'

There is a patch available on the bug report on MySQL.com.

Bug#566093: nautilus: generating thumbnails modifies a file's access time (atime)

2010-01-20 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.28.4-1
Severity: minor

When nautilus generates thumbnails for media, that causes the file's atime
to be changed. This is a bit annoying, because I often use the atime of a
file to determine whether I've watched/listened to it yet. It would be
awesome if nautilus could preserve the atime so that when I open a new
folder, all of my files do not appear to have been accessed "just now".

Bug#565443: util-linux: "fdisk -l" should omit device-mapper managed devices without a partition table (like LVs)

2010-01-15 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: util-linux

"fdisk -l" creates a lot of spam when you have many logical volumes. If a
device-mapper managed virtual device does not contain a partition table, it
shouldn't bother printing junk like this:

Disk /dev/dm-27: 128.8 GB, 128849018880 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 15665 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Sorry -- I mean when you have a "file://" bookmark in your bookmarks folder,
and scroll down to it and use the little arrow on the menu to expand the
list.

Bug#558801: find: option to find files that are currently open

2009-11-30 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: findutils
Version: 4.4.2-1
Severity: wishlist

Especially for things like temporary directory cleanup, it'd be handy if
"find" had an option to seek files that are currently open. I can run the
results of "find" through "fuser" but that's a bit hairy. Something like
this would be nice:

  find /var/tmp/spool -type f -not -open -print0 | xargs -0 -n 1000 rm -f

Thanks,
   Tyler

Bug#552625: apt-ftparchive: Does not allow generation of multiversion Packages files

2009-10-28 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: apt-utils
Version: 0.7.22.2
Severity: normal

Hi,

There does not appear to be any way to instruct apt-ftparchive to generate
multiversion package files. I consider this a bug and not a wishlist item
because the documentation states,

apt-ftparchive is a superset of the dpkg-scanpackages(8) program,
incorporating its entire functionality via the packages command. It
also contains a contents file generator, contents, and an elaborate
means to ´script´ the generation process for a complete archive.

and dpkg-scanpackages has a --multiversion option.

Either apt-ftparchive should be fixed to support multiversion Pacakges
files (this would be the preferred option IMHO), or the documentation needs
to be updated to reflect that apt-ftparchive is actually a subset of the
dpkg-scanpackages program.

  Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#548939: gnome-terminal: feature request: sound an alarm when a terminal's output is updated

2009-09-29 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 2.26.2-2
Severity: wishlist

Often, I have a long-running task running in a terminal (such as an apt
update), that is going to run for a long time, then prompt me with a
question, then run for awile, then ask me more questions, etc...

It would be really nice if I could leave the room while this is happening,
without risking my computer sitting idle for awhile because the prompt
appeared.

I'm thinking a setting where you can specify a list of patterns (regular
expressions) and audio files to play when the pattern is seen in the
terminal output. Maybe by default, have the alarms disable themselves once
they are seen, but give the user an option to also have an alarm be
persistent and play every time a pattern is seen.

Bug#537789: postfix: postmap crashes if networking is not configured

2009-07-20 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: postfix
Version: 2.5.5-1.1
Severity: normal

If you attempt to run postmap before network interfaces have been created,
it crashes with the following error:

postmap: fatal: could not find any active network interfaces

It seems that postmap is playing around with networking stuff, even though
it is only used to make .db key/value pair files.

The workaround is to do an "ifconfig lo up" before running postmap, but
that's kind-of silly. I understand that "postmap -q" can query remote
sources (eg; LDAP), but do I really need an active network interface just to
manipulate files on my own hard disk?

Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#534290: xen-tools: indicates successful completion if you run out of disk space

2009-06-23 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: xen-tools
Version: 4.1-1
Severity: important

I'm using the "copy" method to prep my images.

If xen-tools is copying files into your image and one of your image files /
volumes runs out of disk space, xen-create-image reports back "done" and
happily goes about it's business.

xen-create-image should fail and exit with a nonzero exit status if you get
any error copying files into your xen instance. Otherwise automated
deployment could be very error-prone.

Bug#526364: pidgin: XMPP: crashes when i try to send a message with a bad meta-character

2009-04-30 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: pidgin
Version: 2.5.5-1
Severity: normal

I was just debugging an XML stream problem in my own codebase, found the
offending character and was sending a message with it to a friend so they
could see what was crashing our software. This caused pidgin itself to crash
with "XML Not Well Formed".

The string I was pasting is:

 the worlds greatest ancient mysteries

As you can see, there is a control-Z character where there should be an
apostrophe -- probably some bad encoding soemwhere up the line -- but it
results in pidgin dropping my XMPP connection.

Pidgin (and/or the upstream XML emitter) should handle this better. My software
should too. I'm working on fixing my software now. :-)

Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#363349: mirrors: anonftpsync should have a debian package

Simon,
It's great that something better has come along, but still...

"Sorry, your search gave no results"

:-(

I don't think it should come configured, but since this is basically
at the heart of debian's architecture, doesn't it make sense that it
actually be a debian package with the appropriate dependancies, etc?

Thanks,
Tyler

Version: 2.24.3-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

It would be really nice if I could right click on a tab / document
body in gedit and select "copy document location" to get the document's full
path in my clipboard. It seems the closest I can get is going to "File ->
Open" -- which will allow me to drag-and-drop a path into a terminal window,
but I can't drag it into a chat window since pidgin thinks I'm trying to
start a file transfer, or into another document in gedit since gedit thinks
I'm trying to re-open the file...

Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#198220: dpkg: status?

2009-03-13 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.14.25
Followup-For: Bug #198220

Hi,
This bug's really old... how is it going?

I just did a "dpkg-query -S /usr/bin/w"... and of course, no
matches, since /usr/bin/w is a symlink to /etc/alternatives/w is a symlink
to /usr/bin/w.procps ... It's not exactly convienent to have to follow all
of those by hand to figure out what package owns the program that runs when
I type "w" in a shell.

busybox's manual entry for "ps" says that it supports the "w" option for

more than my terminal widths' output.

It would be especially useful to be able to see this in the debian installer

add the "--enable-ofxplugin" option to the configure arguments -- I'm doing

package can support this :-)

Bug#513995: watch: option to not clear screen between invocations

2009-02-02 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: procps
Version: 1:3.2.7-11
Severity: wishlist

It would be nice if 'watch' had an option to not clear the screen each time
it is run, and it would be even nicer if that option could preserve the
"watch" header while still safely scrolling the rest of the screen.

I often use "watch" to check the progress of things that are kind of hard to
watch the progress of otherwise (eg; rsyncs). Lately, I've stopped using
watch because I can't get a good gauge of overall progress. Instead, I
resort to bash commandlines like;

while true; do du -ks b10; sleep 10; done

Because this won't clear the screen each time, and so I can eyeball how fast
things are actually moving. A command with the purpose of "watch" should
support this sort of behaviour.

Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#509043: transmission-gtk: ability to ask a specific tracker for more peers

2008-12-17 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: transmission-gtk
Version: 1.40-3
Severity: wishlist

With a multi-tracker torrent, it would be nice to be able to ask specific
trackers for more peers.

Also, does the "ask tracker for more peers" selection get grayed out when
*any* of the trackers dont want you to announce yet, when *none* of the
trackers want you to announce yet, or when the *first* tracker doesn't want
you to announce yet?

A lot of the rest of the interface is mono-tracker centric (just filed two
other bugs on this), so if this button gets grayed out only when the first
tracker wants you to leave it alone, this may be another multi-tracker bug
in transmission.

Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#509040: transmission-gtk: you can only view the announce statistics for the first tracker in a .torrent

2008-12-17 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: transmission-gtk
Version: 1.40-3
Severity: minor

When you are viewing the "Tracker" tab for a multi-tracker .torrent in
transmission-gtk, under the "announce" section, you can only view the
information (reponse code, last announce at, next announce in, etc) for the
first tracker on a .torrent.

Also, I'm not sure about this, but I think that the "Scrape" information is
only relevant for the first tracker in a torrent as well.

In the GUI, right above these stats is a list of trackers, and individual
trackers can be put in focus. transmission-gtk should follow that focus and
give you the specific scrape/announce information for the tracker you have
selected.

My justification for making this "minor" instead of "wishlist" is that the
top tracker on the list is not always the most important, and so this
information is being misrepresented if you look at the .torrent as a whole.

Cheers,
Tyler

Bug#509039: transmission: should add additional trackers when a .torrent with the same infohash is added

2008-12-17 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: transmission
Severity: minor

I'm not sure whether it's libtransmission or just the gtk interface that is
causing this, but;

Transmission supports multi-tracker torrents. The transmission GUI allows
you to manually add trackers to a .torrent.

However, if you've already started a .torrent with a given infohash, and
then try to start another .torrent with the same infohash, but different
trackers, the new .torrent is ignored.

Instead, any additional trackers should be pulled out of this .torrent and
added to the tracker list.

Tyler

Bug#507748: svn: "svn up" should realize it does not have a controlling terminal

2008-12-05 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Hi,

I guess my complaint is that the addition of a new feature has made
something that has worked fine for years and years and years just stop. I
get bitchy about that sometimes :-) This one in particular still _really_
irks me;

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=450758

Anyway, up to you if you want to forward it upstream or not. I'll
update all of my scripts to use --non-interactive ... I'm curious how many
people this will bite when the new version of subversion ends up in debian
stable...

Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#507748: svn: "svn up" should realize it does not have a controlling terminal

2008-12-03 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: subversion
Version: 1.5.1dfsg1-1
Severity: minor

The previous behaviour of "svn up" was to mark any conflicts in an update as
"postpone".

Now, you have to specifically select "postpone" on a terminal, or pass in
the "--accept postpone" flag to "svn up".

When subversion is being run without a controlling terminal (eg; "svn up <
/dev/null", or when being executed from a cronjob), subversion should
realize that it has no controlling terminal and revert to the previous
default behaviour, "postpone".

Bug#502380: iceweasel: drag and drop is very inconsistent

2008-10-15 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.0.3-2
Severity: minor

- Pidgin:

If you drag-and-drop a link from iceweasel's addressbar (specifically, the
favicon image) into pidgin, you end up with a link to the page, with the
text of the link being the title of the page. If the page you are sharing
has no title, no text or link appears in the chat window.

- Nautilus desktop:

If you drag-and-drop a link from iceweasel's favicon image to the gnome
desktop;

  - If the page has a title, a link to the page is created on the desktop,
with the title of the webpage as the link's name.

  - If the page does not have a title, you are asked if you would like to
download the page, or create a link to it. If you choose to create a
link, the name of that link is a portion of the URL.

- Openoffice Writer:

If you drag-and-drop a link from iceweasel's favicon image into openoffice
writer, you don't get a link, instead you get the text:

  http://path/to/your/webpage";>http://path/to/your/webpage

Not only is the html code appearing right in the office document, but the
title is not showing up, even if there is a title on the webpage.

- Iceape composer:

Whether the page has a title or not, dragging it's favicon image from
iceweasel into iceape composer results in a valid hyperlink, but it is
always the URL of the page -- the title of the page is never included as
part of the link like it is with pidgin or the nautilus/gnome desktop.

Why is it that iceweasel seems to share urls with each application
differently? The interaction with pidgin definitely seems to be a bug, since
titleless pages can't be shared with drag and drop -- yet the fact that
pidgin recieves iceweasel page titles (whereas openoffice and iceape only
seem to get urls) makes it sound like the GNOME interaction was meant to be
really full-featured. Is this a bug with iceweasel or pidgin? Is the raw
HTML appearing in openoffice a bug with iceweasel or openoffice? And why
can't iceape receive title tags from iceweasel? Aren't they almost the same
program?

  Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#502038: nautilus: search does not live-update

2008-10-12 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.20.0-7
Severity: minor

When you are in the regular file browser view, nautiulus will refresh items
in the folder as they are changed/added/removed. However, if I am in the
search view and I find a file, and say, delete it or move it in a terminal,
the item stays in the search results even though it isn't "really" there.

I dont know how expensive "live-updating" search results for *additions*
would be, but nautiulus should at least recognize that a file has been
removed and take it out of the search results.

Cheers,
Tyler

Bug#500274: pidgin-otr: You can't use the string "?OTRv" in a conversation, even if the conversation is already encrypted

2008-09-26 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: pidgin-otr
Version: 3.2.0-2
Severity: normal

If you use the string "?OTRv" in conversation (eg; to have a conversation
about the OTR protocol, which i was just doing), the message never reaches
it's recipient and instead you get the message "Successfully refreshed
conversation with __".

This makes some sort of sense if the conversation is not yet encrypted, but
if you are already speaking privately, then shouldn't that "?OTRv" string
already be wrapped in an encrypted packet? Is the OTR plugin actually
recursively looking for encrypted data within encrypted data?

Bug#499219: iceweasel prevented this site from opening a pop-up window

2008-09-16 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.0.1-1
Severity: wishlist

When Iceweasel prevents a site from opening a pop-up window, I get the
following options:

Allow pop-ups for ___
Edit pop-up blocker preferences
Don't show this message

It would be nice to have an "allow pop-ups just this once" option so that I
don't have to immediately whitelist a site in order to see what it was going
to send me.

Bug#493550: amarok: if amarok crashes, it forgets the playlist it was on

2008-08-02 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: amarok
Version: 1.4.9.1-3
Severity: normal

If amarok crashes, it forgets the contents of the current playlist, and
reverts to a playlist from a long time ago -- probably the last time amarok
exited normally.

Since the playlist is typically very short, it should be trivial to re-save
the playlist to disk each time it changes, so that if you experience a crash
(either amarok, or a power outage, or whatever), you're still back where you
left off.

Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#201613: closed by Barry deFreese <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (glimmer has been removed from Debian, closing #201613)

2008-04-18 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Hi,

Tis a shame. Glimmer had a lot of promise. Do you know of another
good programmer's editor that has the ability to make the edit window
translucent?

Thanks,
Tyler

Hi,

I'm running sid.

I've had the "education" packages installed for awhile... last week,
an update came out for them which has completely broken the package manager,
making it impossible to upgrade further. I get a message like this for every
"education-*" package:

Preparing to replace education-chemistry 0.824+svn40294 (using
.../education-chemistry_0.825_i386.deb) ...

dpkg: error processing education-chemistry (--remove):

reinstall it before attempting a removal.
Errors were encountered while processing:
 education-chemistry
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

... and trying to force dpkg's hand doesnt work either!

domus:~# dpkg --force-remove-reinstreq --purge education-chemistry
dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
reinstall it before attempting a removal.
(Reading database ... 580601 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing education-chemistry ...
err 67: Custom distribution education does not exist
dpkg: error processing education-chemistry (--purge):
subprocess post-removal script returned error exit status 67

Is there any safe, sane way I can either remove these 50-some-odd
packages or get them to install correctly?

Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#439742: Image

2008-01-07 Thread Tyler MacDonald
An Iguana? A real Indian? (That is, somebody from India?), a block of Ice?
Ivy? The possibilities are endless, and there's lots of free images on
wikimedia commons. Of course, we'd have to get someone to record a new sound
clip for it as well.

Cheers,
Tyler

... If I was scripting yes. But I'm trying to do sysadmin work in a
terminal, and ps has always been simple and intuitive in that regard, until
recently... Recently, in this one small way, it's making us do more work to
get at the results we're after.

I did file the bug as "minor"... more as a gripe than anything else. :-)

Bug#450758: /bin/ps: ps: piping output of ps causes it to assume wide mode

2007-11-09 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: procps
Version: 1:3.2.7-5
Severity: minor
File: /bin/ps

Expected behaviour: If I want wide output, I should have to specify it.

Actual behaviour: I get wide output as a side effect of piping the output of
"ps" through other commands.

I used to be able to do a "ps ax | grep java", and get sane,
terminal-readable output. Sometime since then, the "ps" command seems to
have changed to default to wide output when it's output is sent through a
pipe. Since some of my java processes have commandlines 1,000s of characters
long, this makes the output of "ps ax | grep java" unreadable...

Yes, I can do a "ps ax --width 80 | grep ..."... but this is silly and
unintuitive and a change from the way it's always been before.

Is there any way you can get a stack backtrace out of this? Like
attaching gdb to a httpd process and then causing the segfault?

Bug#446291: anjuta: ugly URI escaping in title bar

2007-10-11 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: anjuta
Version: 2:2.2.1-1+b1
Severity: minor

I just created a file called "Backend::Xyzzy::API.t", a unit test for one of
my perl modules... the file was created with the correct name, but the title
bar calls it "Backend%3A%3AXyzzy%3A%3AAPI.t"

Is this really neccessary? URI-escaping is designed to be consumed by
machines, not humans, and I don't see any value in having a filename in the
titlebar that is different than the filename on disk. It's pretty ugly. I'd
prefer to just see the actual filename... only _unprintable_ characters
should really be escaped for humans.

  Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#446016: mutt doesn't handle mailto: links from lists.debian.org correctly

2007-10-09 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: mutt
Version: 1.5.16-3
Severity: minor

Example, a message I wanted to reply to:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2007/10/msg00868.html

The "reply" link at the bottom of the page is:

mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>&Subject=Re:%20Re: gnome alarm clock
/ egg timer?

When open mutt with that link, i get the correct In-Reply-To: header, but
my "Subject:" line is empty.

Cheers,

You don't need to go through all of that if you buy the product. If you
get a free open source developmnet license, they want you to renew every
year, and they want an account on your server so they can make sure you've
only got open source code on there.

Perforce is an absolutely *excellent* VCS with the unfortunate
distinction of being proprietary. SubVersion can do most (but not all) of
what it does, albeit 10 times slower. Still, I've migrated all of my stuff
over to subversion, because, well, subversion is free. Perforce is free (as
in "free beer") for open source developers, if you want more than 2 users on
one VCS server, you have to sign a contract, get a license, give the
perforce people full access to your repo, sign a new contract whenever you
server's IP address changes, and renew each year

Bug#238237: grep: not only does -P not work, but the manual page says it does!

2007-09-25 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: grep
Version: 2.5.3~dfsg-2
Followup-For: Bug #238237

Not only does "grep -P" not work, but the manual page says it will:

   -P, --perl-regexp
Interpret PATTERN as a Perl regular expression. This is
highly
experimental and grep -P may warn of unimplemented features.

$ grep -P "foo"
grep: Support for the -P option is not compiled into this
--disable-perl-regexp binary

I really hope bug #350468 gets fixed, so that debian grep can support the -P
option.

Please???

PCRE's are 1,000x more useful than regular old regexp's, not having PCRE in

essential and moved to /lib, so that grep can consume it? Cmon, it's only

In Linux Letters and Numbers, when you press the "I" button, sometimes the
word "Indian" comes up. However, the picture that is portrayed with it is
not a person from India, but a Native American.

These people used to be called "Indians" when us white folk didn't know any
better. We've grown up since then, and we should stop lying to our children
who are just learning english.

Bug#429890: gnome-terminal: Ctrl-+ sends "+" to the terminal if you are already at maximum size

2007-06-20 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 2.18.0-2
Severity: normal

Ctrl-+ normally increases the font size and does not echo anything to the
terminal. However, if you are at the maximum font size, pressing Ctrl-+
causes gnome-terminal to echo a "+" keypress to the terminal.

I am certain this is not the intended behaviour, and it can be problematic
for spastic people like me who like to do things like hold down Ctrl and
loudly bash "+" a few dozen times.

While I'm on the subject, the default maximum font size seems a little bit
on the small side, but I'll save that for another bug. ;-)

  Thanks,
Tyler

With the "experimental" paravirtualization options enabled, it is also
impossible to load the VMware kernel modules. I find this ironic since
VMware contributed the paravirtualization code to the kernel. ;-)

And dmesg reports:

Forum post where I found that disabling paravirtualization fixes it:

Doing my own make-kpkg now but I hope this is disabled in mainstream soon
since for the time being, not having it is more useful than having it :-)

Bug#424833: New mod_bt .deb's

2007-05-22 Thread Tyler MacDonald
tag 424833 pending
thanks

Hi Julien,

mod_bt development has continued to stagnate for awhile... one of
these days I'll get the time to keep going on it... my next goal is to get
it moved off of this perforce repo into subversion... i've gotten sick and
tired of perforce...

Anyways, i've rolled up a new release to deal with bug #424833. The
only change should be a lack of dependancies on php4, and a lack of a
php4-apache2-mod-bt package. You can find the new package here:

http://www.crackerjack.net/mod_bt/debian/etch/

Let me know when you get a chance to upload it :-)

Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#408315: ITP: mysql-workbench -- Official MySQL database schema designer / editor

2007-01-24 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Tyler MacDonald <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

* Package name: mysql-workbench
  Version : x.y.z
  Upstream Author : MySQL AB
* URL : http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/gui-tools/5.0.html
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C
Description : Official MySQL database schema designer / editor

MySQL Workbench is a graphical tool for designing databases. It allows
database administrators to design database schemas visually, and existing
MySQL schemas can also be imported, edited in the graphical interface, then
re-exported to a MySQL database server.

This product is still in alpha, but appears to work well, and it already has
a lot of useful functionality.

Bug#407061: One cause of the problem

2007-01-16 Thread Tyler MacDonald
I have determined one cause of the problem. If there are no ports available
in your range, torrentflux *always* fails in this way.

However, it still *sometimes* fails in this way even if there are ports
available.

So it may actually be three different bugs that need to be fixed:

* The queue manager should deal more gracefully with torrent deaths
so that the manager doesn't get confused

* Need to figure out why some torrents take a few tries to start up
successfully, even when there are ports available...

* The queue manager should not start a torrent if the number of
active torrents is equal or greater to the number of ports
available. What would be *really* slick here is some sort of
useful warning message. And if there was a warning message on
"Admin -> Settings" and/or "Admin -> Queue" if the number of
torrents setting is in conflict with the maximum number of ports
  that torrentflux can use.

I'll let Cameron decide if we should split that into multiple bugs or not...
each one does sound like a different piece of work to me tho.

Bug#407065: torrentflux: way to rename RSS feeds?

2007-01-15 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: torrentflux
Severity: wishlist

Example: I have two different mininova searches stored as RSS feeds. When I
look at my RSS listing, they both just show up as "mininova"... it'd be nice
to have a way to rename / re-order these feeds to keep them organized.

Bug#407066: torrentflux: option to limit number of results from an RSS feed?

currently, torrentflux just pulls in an entire RSS feeds, which could be
hundreds of entries. it would be nice if there was a setting for the maximum
number of results fetched from an RSS feed, either as a global setting, or
on a per-RSS basis.

Bug#407061: torrentflux queue manager breaks unreliably

2007-01-15 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: torrentflux
Version: 2.1-7
Severity: important

At least 10% of the time, a torrent will "fail" mysteriously when the queue
manager attempts to start it. When this happens, the index.php page starts
showing the torrent size as "0k".

The torrent also still appears in the admin/queue section as "queued", even
though the main page shows it as "failed".

After this happens, the queue manager freezes... Any torrents that are
already running are fine, but if you add any, they just sit at "queued"
forever.

A workaround to this problem is to go into Admin -> Queue, and click on the
"Update Settings" button. When you do this, the queue manager seems to wake
up and start processing torrents again. Once in awhile, the queue manager
will actually *succeed* in picking up the previously failed torrent and
start up as usual. However, more often than not, the torrent remains in a
failed state, and must be "queued" and then "stopped" in order to remove it
from the queue, so that other torrents can get a chance to run.

A python traceback shows up in my apache error_log as well; I don't know if
this is related:

Bug#406113: libpam-modules: pam_ftp.so incompatible with pam_chroot.so?

2007-01-08 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: libpam-modules
Version: 0.79-4
Severity: normal

pam_chroot.so does not seem to be invoked when a user is authenticated as
anonymous by pam_ftp. I am not sure if the bug lies with pam_ftp,
pam_chroot, or pure-ftpd.

Consider the config below. When a regular authenticated user logs in, they
are herded into their chroot environment. When the anonymous FTP user logs
in, they are *not* chrooted before the session is handed off to pure-ftpd.

Not a *huge* deal for me, since my ftp isn't writable anyways, I just mount
--bind'ed it outside of it's chroot jail... but it is a little bit annoying
and I can see this causing security problems in other setups.

Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#400239: monodevelop crashes on startup

2006-11-24 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: monodevelop
Version: 0.12+dfsg-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I started using monodevelop two days ago, got a simple project off of the
ground... then closed it. Yesterday and today I've tried to open it, but
monodevelop crashes on startup. It gets as far as showing the title window,
the title bar changes to "Welcome", and then the stack trace below comes up.

I don't think I did anything unusual.

I just tried removing my .config/MonoDevelop directory, and that makes it
work. I have uploaded my MonoDevelop directory here so you can reproduce the
problem: http://www.crackerjack.net/~faraway/MonoDevelop.tgz

Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#400241: monodevelop tries to save files I have not edited

monodevelop tries to auto-save files that have not been changed. If these
files are read-only, this causes annoying uneccessary pop-up errors.

My SCM keeps files read-only until I check them out. Once I start editing a
solution, I could understand the error pop-ups, but just opening a solution
should not cause anything on the harddrive to be changed.

Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#399921: monodevelop tramples on my envrionment variables

2006-11-22 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: monodevelop
Version: 0.12+dfsg-1
Severity: important

Hello,
I use environment variables to configure my perforce account, and
monodevelop seems to wipe/ignore these variables when I run tools.

Here's an example configuration:

Tool:

Title: p4 edit
Command: /usr/local/bin/p4
Arguments: edit ${itemPath}
Working Directory: ${itemDir}

I get the following result:

Access for user 'faraway' has not been enabled by 'p4 protect'.

Process '/usr/local/bin/p4' has exited with errorcode 1.

However, if I run the following command in the same terminal that
monodevelop was started from, inside my project's directory, everything
works fine:

/usr/local/bin/p4 edit /home/farawIS/users/tmacdonald/rrdcheck/rrdcheck/Main.cs

Please allow monodevelop to pass environment variables along so that
tools that depend on them can use them.

Thanks,
Tyler

I think all that's neccessary is a control file update to make it
build-depend on the new stuff. I'll give it a shot and let you know. I can't
upload it though, I'm not an official maintainer yet...

I know. :-( Unfortunately, the apache2 in unstable doesn't install correctly
anymore either because it fails to create /var/log/apache2, so I can't prove
a working build in pbuilder. To top it off, the libapache2-mod-perl2 package
has not been converted to apache2.2 yet, so if I want to release new .debs,
I can't provide libapache2-modbt-perl yet.

I'm keeping tabs on the situation; as soon as it's possible to release new
.debs that will autobuild, I'll put out 0.0.19-2.

Thanks,
Tyler

Bug#388146: a apr-doc package would be nice

2006-09-18 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: apr
Severity: wishlist

APR provides browsable documentation via doxygen. It would be nice if the
debian APR source package created a apr-doc package out of doxygen's output
so people don't need to have http://apr.apache.org/docs/apr open when
they're programming.

Bug#384296: libapache2-modbt-perl: long description not really helpful

2006-08-23 Thread Tyler MacDonald
severity 384296 minor
thanks

Gerfried,

I think the long description for libapache2-mod-bt sums it up
pretty nicely:

1. mod_bt is a BitTorrent tracker for the Apache Web server.

2. It is written in C and runs as an Apache 2.x module.

3. It is possible for mod_perl or PHP to directly access the tracker's
information

4. The tracker is fully configured from within Apache's own configuration
file.

This package is perl bindings for the above. I'll try to make that 100%
clear in the description on the next version.

Thanks,
Tyler

Package: mod-bt

According to Policy Section 2.5: Priorities packages MUST NOT depend on
packages with lower priority values (excluding build-time dependencies). In
order to ensure this, the priorities of one or more packages must be
adjusted.

Package is optional and has a Depends on libdb4.2-dev (within libdb4.4-dev |

I'd rather avoid an uneccessary debconf question. And what about
people on dynamic IPs? I'm thinking that _default_:6969 may work better, but
I am going to test how that interacts with other types of virtual hosts in
the same config to see how it behaves first.

Stanislav,

mod_bt still works correctly with that configuration and does not
interfere with apache's existing config, I think that warning message is a
bit paranoid. Still, I will experiment with the debian apache configuration
and see if i can make it go away.

Bug#380250: tpkg-debarch should support "arm-linux-gnu" target (was Re: small quirks setting up a cross-compile toolchain)

2006-07-28 Thread Tyler MacDonald
Package: toolchain-source
Severity: grave
Tags: patch

toolchain-source as it stands is currently unusable for building ARM
cross-compiler targets. It appears that you must specify "arm-linux-gnu" to
several of the builds in order to get the install to work correctly.
However, this target is not supported by tpkg-debarch. The attached patch is
not a complete solution, but it at least makes it *possible* to build for
arm again (so long as you use the magic "arm-linux-gnu" incantation).

Okay, so when I did that, I would get this message every so often:

"Hmph - dunno the arm-linux-gnu arch"

... and then eventually:

http://ftp.yi.org/debian/dists/testing/main/binary-none/Packages.gz
   => /tmp/tpkg-install-libc.CMosC11963/packageset.gz'

binary-none, eh?

So I added "arm-linux-gnu" to tpkg-debarch, and that made it work!!!
