Bug#414062: gnome-chess does not install .desktop
Package: gnome-chess Version: 0.3.3-6 Hello. This is a bug originally reported in Malone [1]. The problem is that gnome-chess does not have a menu entry (not the debian menu). What appears to be the cause is that, while the package includes a .desktop file, this is not installed in /usr/share/applications as it should be but rather in /usr/share/gnome/apps/Games/gnome-chess.desktop where, at least Gnome (I suspect KDE as well) cannot find it. The above was during a relatively-frequent dapper upgrade, but I'm thinking more of the much-longer upgrades, such as the breezy=dapper dist-upgrade, for example. Is there a plausible manner to change invoke-rc.d firestarter stop to invoke-rc.d firestarter restart or something similar, and still accomplish what you need during upgrade? I've seen that some packages appear to issue two restarts rather than a stop and subsequent start, but never questioned the rationale (or mechanism). The goal of course would be to limit the users' exposure to running without an active firewall, especially on machines where the admin doing the upgrade is not the sole active user. (ie, remote upgrades) It would be great if you took a look into this issue! You do have a point there about the privileges. It appears to have escaped me. Logging in graphically is not neccessary - one can use gksudo. I was thinking that two thing can be done: (a) Add it with gksudo in Gnome's Applications-Internet-Driftnet (i.e. leaving the .desktop as is and adding 'gksudo' in front of exec. This makes sense in terms of categorisation, but on the other hand is not consistent with the rest of the system (I don't expect to find programs requiring sudo under 'Applications') (b) Add it again with gksudo in Gnome's System-Administration. Here 'Exec' needs to be changed again and Categories should look like System;Settings; I think the best to do is the second approach but it's really your call. I tried creating a patch for the skin support on the Ubuntu bugtracker[1]. It seems be fine with only one of the skins, the other doesn't work, and it's likely to be a skin issue (I tried gdk_pixbuf_new_from_file(path_to_broken_skin) and it didn't work. The other one loads fine. I take it back. I don't know why I didn't see it earlier, but there certainly is a proper menu entry for xarclock, so the menu file is working properly. If you want a .desktop file generated on your system (for pretty much any Debian packages), you must install the Debian menu package. If you have menu installed, and a .desktop file is still not being generated, that indicates a bug in the package which uses the .desktop files. How exactly do I generate the .desktop file? I looked up the menu documentation but couldn't figure it out. Sorry if I'm wasting your time here by the way.
