BTW this problem started to happen when we moved from deb. squeeze to wheezy. Bug#505674: ifupdown: No definition in /etc/network/interfaces for lo (in testing/lenny)
Package: ifupdown Version: 0.6.8+nmu1 Severity: important After installing the lenny/testing (via netinstall image) , i found that there is no 'standard' entry for lo ( auto lo iface lo inet loopback ) in /etc/network/interfaces, causing lookups to 'localhost' and connections to 127.0.0.1:23456 to fail. Also, in this case 'ifconfig -a' does not show the lo interface.
