Bug#1027142: Correction: Not a permissions but a settings problem

2022-12-30 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
In searching for the cause, I found that the failure of 2D acceleration
must be due to a user configuration problem rather than a permissions
problem.

The system partition and thus the roots folder were newly created, the
/home/ partition was taken over from the previous installation. This was
created years ago with Debian 9 (at that time with a radeon driver).

The 2D acceleration does not work for any of the old users. But it does
for  a completely new user or the new root-account created during the
installation.
So there must be a problem with the old user settings that prevents
access to the hardware acceleration memory or puts it on a wrong address.

No idea which one this should be and where to find it.
My solution now is to recreate the user directories and move the data
from the old directories there. Users will then have to redo their
settings, which is less tragic than not having 2D acceleration.

Bug#1027070: linux-image-amd64: resume from hibernate fails, no keyboard or mouse, no screen or frozen screen

2022-12-29 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
In order to get a possibly more consistent system, I switched to Debian
12 in the meantime.

This uses the kernel 6.0.12-1 as well.

   apt list linux-image-amd64
   Auflistung… Fertig
   linux-image-amd64/testing,now 6.0.12-1 amd64  [installiert]

The behavior has not changed, the system does seem to wake up when a key
is pressed, the hard drive and fan start, the status LED is permanently
on instead of blinking, but the system remains unusable. No further
response to keyboard or mouse, and the network has not been reactivated
either, no response to a ping.

The PC is based on an Asus A68HM-PLUS with UEFI BIOS V. 2011-x64 10/17/2018.

Bug#1027142: Update: Probably not a GLX but an accelerator issue

2022-12-29 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll

In order to get the PC usable, I have tried to disable the part of the
system causing the error.

Disabling GLX made no difference (Option "GLX" "Disable"),
but disabling the 2D hardware acceleration did it (Option "AccelMethod"
"none").

So with the latter setting, the PC is usable until there is a solution
to the hardware acceleration problem.

BTW:
A test with 2D acceleration and the ' Option "ShadowPrimary" "on" '
crashed the x-server, showing a backtrace on the console.
Possibly caused by the same issue.

Bug#1027142: xorg: OpenGL only works for root, not for normal users

2022-12-28 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.7+23
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: wolf-dieter.gr...@gmx.de

Dear Maintainer,

After a fresh install of Debian 11 on this machine (Kaveri A10-7850K), OpenGL
only worked for root, not for users.
Same for Radeon and amdgpu drivers.
Thinking this might be an issue of an old firmware and an old kernel, I
installed Debian 12.
But the problem still persists: OpenGL works for root (Firefox, FreeCAD,
glxheads), but not for other users.

When started as a normal user, OpenGL windows just seem to show garbled parts
of the memory. These bitmaps change when moving or resizing the Window, but
they don't show any changes related to the program.

I already checked the permissions:

 wolf-dieter@CSL6001:/dev/dri$ groups

   GL_VENDOR: AMD
GL_RENDERER: AMD Radeon R7 Graphics (kaveri, LLVM 15.0.5, DRM 3.48,

As OpenGL works for root, it looks like a permission problem. But which and
where?

Bug#1027070: linux-image-amd64: resume from hibernate fails, no keyboard or mouse, no screen or frozen screen

2022-12-27 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: linux-image-amd64
Version: 6.0.3-1~bpo11+1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: wolf-dieter.gr...@gmx.de

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

The automatic upgrade to the newest backports kernel.
I had to move to a backport kernel (more than a year ago), because a kernel
from 5.14 was required to switch to amdgpu graphics.

In the past the resume from hibernation worked flawlessly, like on the other
PCs and Laptops with the standard bullseye kernel.
But since a recent upgrade to a newer kernel (> 5.18?) the PC does not recover
from hibernation.

The PC can be woken up via the keyboard or the mouse, and it then also starts,
but afterwards both the keyboard and the mouse are dead. The screen also
becomes active for a short time, but then does not get an (HDMI) signal in most
cases. Every now and then, however, the last screen content is displayed
frozen.

Same picture on another PC where I installed Debian 12 (Testing) because of the
graphics card support (RX 6400, amdgpu). With the old graphics card and a
standard Debian 11 the problem did not occur there.

Bug#999613: grub2: Bullseye installer: Grub fails to install, installer just indicates that something went wrong.

2021-11-13 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: grub2-common
Version: 2.04-20
Severity: normal
File: grub2
Tags: a11y

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

Installation of Bullseye from "debian-live-11.1.0-i386-xfce+nonfree"
with fresh formatting of the "/" and swap partition of the SSD.
Everything worked as expectet until the installation of the grub2:
This part repeatedly led to reporting of a serious error without
becoming more precise.

The following boot attempt failed, and ended in a grup-prompt

Almost a year ago, Debian 10 was installed on the same hardware without
any problems.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Ineffective:
"boot-repair-disk-32bit", it led to the same result.
But: In the log there was the hint to the problem:
"grub-install: error: failed to get canonical path of `/cow'."
Effective:
Booting the live system
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
cd /mnt
grub-install --recheck --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

   * What was the outcome of this action?
After that, the system could be booted as usual, with the difference
that there is now a textual Grub menu instead of the graphical one.

changed from german to english, despite the correct language setting
(LANG=de_DE.UTF-8).
I was able to correct the keyboard settings with ibus-setup, but I found no way

A Version compiled from the source (https://sourceforge.net/projects/opencfu/)
showed the same behaviour, so it doesn't seem to be a matter of dependencies.

I also looked in the unstable repositories, but the version in Sid seems to be
exactly the same as in Buster.

Bug#949289: Workaround: No wifi and no sound after suspend

2020-01-21 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Installing a network restart service as suggested on

https://askubuntu.com/questions/761180/wifi-doesnt-work-after-suspend-after-16-04-upgrade

has fixed the problem.

Even so this only restarts the network-manager.service, the other
problems are solved as well: Sound ok, shutdown is working.

Bug#949289: bugs.debian.org: No wifi and no sound after suspend

2020-01-19 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: bugs.debian.org
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Since a recent update in january WiFi and sound do no longer recover from
suspend (after closing and opening laptop lid).
Keyboard, touchpad and screen seem to be ok, but shutdown and restart
(gnomeshell) are broken as well. No reaction.
The laptop has to be restarted by hard power off.
This never happened before.
Hardware: HP Elitebook G 840

I haven't found a workaroud yet. Looks like the resume from suspend is broken,
as more than a single function is affected.

Wolf-Dieter

Bug#888204: cups-pdf: Ugly and hard to read output (Type 3 fonts)

2018-01-23 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: cups-pdf
Version: 2.6.1-22
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

since upgrading to Debian 9, CUPS-PDF produces an ugly and hard to read output.
Obviously because it doesn't anymore embeds vector fonts but only Type 3 bitmap
fonts.

Setting PDFVer to 1.5 in cups-pdf.conf didn't help.

Is there a setting to make cups-pdf switching back to vector fonts again?

This was much better in earlier Debian releases.

Using "Print to file" results in an much better readable PDF output. See
attached Image.

Best regards
  Wolf-Dieter

Bug#877648: gnome-shell: Java Applications are fullscreen, cannot be resized by hotkey, lacking buttons in titlebar

2017-10-03 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: gnome-shell
Version: 3.22.3-3
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Java Applications (like Mediathekview, Gpsprune) are always shown fullscreen in
Gnome3, there are no buttons (close, resize, maximize) in the titlebar, hotkeys
to resize (Alt-F9, Alt-F10, ...) do not work, neither does doubleclicking or
moving the mouse to the top left corner in order to show the other applications
or favorites.

The only way to change to other applications is Alt-Tab or closing the Java-
Application (Alt-F4 works).

This only happens using the Gnome-shell, on other desktops like XFCE or
Cinnamon, Java applications behave normal like any other window, showing
buttons in the titlebar, reacting to hotkeys as expected.

Bug#868581: xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu doesn't start due to incompatibility to DRM in Debian 9.0

2017-07-16 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu

Dear Maintainer,

I tried to switch from the "radeon" to the the "amdgpu" driver
by adding /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amdgpu.conf with the following lines:

Identifier "AMD"
Driver "amdgpu"

After this X11 failed to start, trying to login from gdm resulted in an
immidiate restart of gdm.

Here the corresponding lines from /var/log/messages:

To get a graphical desktop I had to remove "20-amgdpu.conf" thus falling back

Bug#800707: systemd: Sytem hangs on shutdown when nfs-shares are mounted via autofs

2017-01-06 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Dear Maintainer,

I just encountered the same problem after upgrading two laptops from
Xubuntu 14.04 LTS to the actual version of Debian Jessie. One running
the i386 version, the other amd64.

With Xubuntu autofs worked smoothly, but since the upgrade to jessie
shutdown fails as long as there are any mounted nfs-shares.

Shutting down brings up a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top
left corner on both systems. After a few minutes there is some output:

System 1 (i386):

After this you have to remove the power (by pressing the power button
for a long time).
The systems won't shut down by themselves nor react on any keyboard or
touchpad entry.

Systemd should be able to shut down the system, even if there are faulty
or misbehaving services during shutdown.

2016-06-14 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: xul-ext-pwdhash
Version: 1.7-13
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
A normal system upgrade.
With this upgrade iceweasel was replaced by firefox-esr (45.2.0) in jessie.

Starting Firefox, it checked all AddOns and stated that PwdHash is incompatible
to this version of firefox.
I tried to use the version from unstable, 1.7.3-1 (instead of 1.7-13): Same as
above.

At last I changed in /usr/share/xul-ext/pwdhash/install.rdf
from 45.0 to 45.9.
This did it, an as far as I can see, PwdHash now works fine with firefox-esr
45.2.0

Bug#569244: [brasero] brasero still ignores speed settings

2015-05-30 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll

Package: brasero
Version: 3.11.4-1.1

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

brasero still ignores speed settings.
By always using the maximum speed, it produces media with an ecxessive
amount of errors (QpxTool):

This behavior makes brasero an unnusable package.

Bug#746157: fglrx-legacy-driver: fglrx-legacy does not install due to broken dependencies

2014-04-27 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: fglrx-legacy-driver
Severity: serious
Justification: 2

Dear Maintainer,

I tried to install fglrx-legacy on wheezy from backports using synaptic.
This failed with synaptic reporting broken packets.
At least the version of make breaks the required dependencies:
Wheezys make is version 3.81-8.2, but fglrx-legacy relies on 2.82 or beyond.

Fglrx worked perfectly over years with squeeze, but was broken after the
upgrade
to wheezy, as wheezys fglrx-driver doesn't support the installed HD3450 any
longer.
The wheezy radeon-driver frequently hangs on that machine, so I'm very
interested
to use the well-proven fglrx again.

This is an issue of a friends PC, not of this one.
It's a dual-Core Amd64, but is uses the same debian-version and settings as
this machine.

Bug#743626: nfs-kernel-server doesn't startup reliable. Needs 'reload' or 'restart' in order to work

2014-04-04 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: nfs-kernel-server
Version: 1:1.2.6-4
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
Upgrading from Debian Squeeze to Wheezy.
I never had any problems of this kind with former versions of Debian (Sqeeze,
Lenny, ..).

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Mounting a nfs-share leads to
"mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting server:home/"
at the client and to syslog entry on the server like
"rpc.mountd[3073]: refused mount request from 192.168.001.32 for /home (/home):
unmatched host"
or
"rpc.mountd[3073]: refused mount request from
2002::::::: for /home (/home): unmatched host"

But "host {IP-Addr}" gives exactly the name of the host as it is written in
the exports-file or returned by exportfs.

Till now the problem could always be solved with a "/etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-
server restart" run as root,
sometimes, but not always, a "/etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server reload" did it as
well.

Once by chance I mentioned that exportfs was empty. In this very case a
"exportfs -a" solved the problem.

This issue occurs on amd64 and i386 machines.
It looks to me like other services or information needed by nfs-kernel-server
aren't yet ready when it starts up, leaving it up in an semi-configured state.
Because when the system is up. a "restart" of the nsf-kernel-server always
leads to a functional nfs-server.

Bug#736586: cups printing ignores centering option and printing margins

2014-01-25 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: cups
Version: 1.5.3-5+deb7u1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
Printing a PDF with insufficient own margins.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
First I printed the PDF (from evince) using the option "scale to paper size":
to the Printer (ML-2510).
The top and the borders at the left and the right side were cut off.
Next I scaled down the printing size and enabled the centering option: The
printing was scaled, but the top and left border were cut off again. No
centering!
Then I changed from the standard paper size to a custom paper size adding 15mm
to each border: It was Ignored.
After this I printed the File to CUPS-PDF in order to create a PDF with
sufficient margins for the printer. Same as above, scaling worked, but
centering and margins were ignored.
Thus it doesn't seem to be a problem of the individual printer driver but a
problem of cups or the cups dialog for printing.

Bug#715405: brasero ignores the write speed settings on CDs, always using maximum speed

2013-07-08 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: brasero
Version: 3.4.1-4
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
Burning a ISO-Image to a CD-R

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
I changed the burning speed in "Settings" from "maximum speed" to the lowest
offered choice, 16x.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
Brasero ignored the speed setting, started burning with ~ 24x and ended up at
48x

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
I expected a limitation of the burning speed to the choosen maximum 16x in
order to get a more precicse burned CD with less errors
( -> QPXtool ).

Bug#713812: udisks-daemon memory leak

2013-06-22 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: udisks
Version: 1.0.4-7
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
I've tried to reformat an external 1TB USB2-HDD from NTFS to ext4 with the
gnome diskmanager (palimpsest)

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
I started formatting to ext4. While formatting was still ongoing, I recognized
the Partition Type byte was still set to NTFS. I changed it to 0x83Linux.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
The Computer became quite slow, one processor always showing 100% load. The
udisks-daemon took most of the physical 8GB memory, and the swap was filling
rapidly.
When the udisks-daemons memory consuption reached almost 16GB memory, I decided
to reboot the system.
After rebooting, I used gparted to change the partition type an reformat it to
ext4. It took only a few seconds, no odds.

Bug#707567: Installation finally worked after repartitioning and formatting

2013-05-10 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Hello,

after I failed to install Wheezy, I tried to reinstall Squeeze on this
partition containing still /home/, /boot/ and /etc/.
The Debian 6.0.3 installer failed almost the same way, even so the
former system has been installed from this very CD!
I tried the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Installer, it failed also, reporting it was
unable to overwrite some files on the disk.
Checking the filesystem with fsck.ext3 and the RAM with MemCheck didn't
reported any odds!
Finally I decided to do a clean install with repartitioning the Harddisk
and formatting every partition -
and now Wheezy netinstall worked without any problems!

As the other installers failed too, I believe this bug report can be closed.

Either there was something wrong with the partiton table or a flaw in
the ext3-filesystem that fsck couldn't detect,
or there was an hardware-error like an unrecoverable sector on the disk
drive. Reading such an sector will fail, but
when it gets written, the hdd-controller will mark this sector as bad
and reallocate one of the spare sectors for it.
Unfortunately, I haven't checked the number of reallocated sectors
before and after formatting the drive.

Anyhow - Wheezy is up and running on this PC

Bug#707567: installation-reports: Wheezy i386 netinst fails installing base system: /var/cache/apt doesn't exist

2013-05-09 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: installation-reports
Severity: important

Error Message:

  [!!] Grundsystem Installieren
Warnung: Failure trying to run: chroot /target dpkg --force depends --install
 /var/cache/apt/archives/base-files_7.1_i386.deb
 /var/cache/apt/archives/base-passwd_3.5.26_i386.deb

Actually, there is no directory "apt" in "/var/cache/"!
Anything I found in "/var/cache" was a lonely subdir "anna" with only the file
"Packages.default" in it.

P.S.
"df -Tl" doesn't work within the busybox

Comments/Problems:

After "apt-get dist-upgrade" failed leaving an unusable system (Bug#707045),
I decided to install Wheezy with a netinst-CD.
To archive a clean installation, i removed /usr, /bin, /var, ...
I kept /home (of course) and /etc, /mnt.

Of course I report these problems from a different machine.
So the information below isn't related to the PC with the
installation problems.
But, before my attempt to upgrade to Wheezey, Debian 6.0.7 worked fine
on both PCs

Bug#613208: No Kbd/Mouse/Display after 6.0.0 Upgrade/Installation

2011-02-17 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Hi,

I've found the reason for the crash of the X-server. The R128 xserver
depends on the firmware for the Rage128 graphics card. Lenny installed
this special firmware, Squeeze didn't do so. I don't know who is
responsible for loading the firmware, but the xserver should test
whether the graphics card meets all the requirements and should switch
back to a safe mode if something is wrong.

Manually installing "firmware-linux-nonfree" (recovery-console w.
USB-Stick) solved the problem, Squeeze is now operational.

Looking into the packet, I suppose that there are many other cards which
may cause similar problems.

So there must be a way to a running system and to inform the user, that
he needs to install packages that are not included on the
installation-DVD or available in the currently configures sources.

I believe it's the job of the Xorg-Team to ensure a running system even
with missing firmware (fbdev, VESA), but the Installer-Team should also
find a way to enable the user to get all the required packages for his
system during the installation process.

Bug#613208: No Kbd/Mouse/Display after 6.0.0 Upgrade/Installation

2011-02-13 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Hello Christian,

I've attached the 7zipped report form "reportbug xorg" to this mail.
Seems to be an Xorg problem. Maybe because of a missing configuration.
Nevertheless "Xorg -configure" doesn't produce an usable configuration.
Results in the same behavior as no xorg.conf at all: No mouse, no
Keyboard to switch to an alternate console, and a messy graphical screen.

2011-02-13 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: installation-reports

Justification: breaks the whole system

First I tried to upgrade, after this failed I tried a clean install:
same Problem

Starting the recovery console works, but starting Xorg hangs the
computer again: Messy graphical display,
Mouse and Keyboard dead.
Maybe a xserver problem withe the ATI Rage 128 graphic card, the upgrade
from Lenny to Squeeze worked
on an even older PC with an ATI Mach64 grapic card

Bug#462149: cupsys: "Unable to open parallel port device file "/dev/lp0": Permission, denied"

2008-01-22 Thread Wolf-Dieter Groll
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.2.7-4etch2

After installing a plain etch last year (4.0r0) and just now after
upgrading cups to 1.2.7 it was
impossible to print
to a printer connected to /dev/lp0, even so I'm a member of the 'lp'-group:

crw-rw 1 root lp 6, 0 2008-01-20 20:01 /dev/lp0

Setting permissions to 666 of /dev/lp0 helped up to the next reboot.

In my case, the problem could be solved setting the group of
usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel to 'lp'
and setting the GID-Bit (chmod 2755 parallel):

-rwxr-sr-x 2 root lp 13K 2007-12-24 22:50 parallel

Thus I'm able to print again, probably up to the next cupsys-update and
hopefully beyond...
