Bug#1074250: ifupdown2 not working with python3.12

2024-06-25 Thread Dave B
Package: ifupdown2
Version: 3.0.0-1.1
Severity: grave
Tags: ipv6
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation? The upgrade to python3.12 which replaced
"readfp" with "read_file)
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? I
replaced "readfp" to read_file in /usr/share/ifupdown2/ifupdown/main.py and it
fixed the problem.
   * What was the outcome of this action? ifup and ifdown started working
properly.

It isn't causing any issues. I reported it as I thought it was
slightly amusing (but harmless).

Actually it turns out to be a totem bug.
When I play a video on that second session - it screws up the video
(makes it dark). If I use vlc it doesn't occur.

This bug was reported on my behalf. For some reason, the bug tracker
didn't get my last email.
I've attached my config files for you to review.
Recently Windows 7 has intermittently been able to get a lease, which
is very strange.

Well yes this would be a change from the current behaviour.
If you don't have the key in the keyring then debootstrap will not be
able to check the release files and will not continue.
If the key is in the keyring then debootstrap will continue.

Perhaps to complement --keyring, --key could also exist. (making it
slightly easier to work with).

with
1. - the user will now have to put the required key into the keyring
(by default)

2. while this may be possible, it probably is wise if the user fetches
the key (like in 2)

3. Hum, isn't there cd key ?(you could check the iso is ok) / how does
the D-I handle it ?

With 3. perhaps a --no-keyring option could be used?

Bug#607988: ok sure

2011-01-02 Thread dave b
Ok sure - the bug isn't so critical really and really what happens is
that when upgrading there are those damn broken symlinks which should
be cleaned up / ignored.
It would appear that in my case several of the python packages I had
installed but not --purged (in removal) resulted in their symlinks
being left behind.

Yeah it turns out, I had this:

set CFLAGS -g -O2 -Wall -fstack-protector -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -fPIE -pie
set CPPFLAGS -g -O2 -Wall -fstack-protector -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -fPIE -pie

in /etc/dpkg/buildflags.conf --> my fault!

2010-12-10 Thread dave b
Right so modifying the debian rules file as per
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=589054
I was able to build iodine with some gcc hardening protections.

Simply adding some CFLAGS and disabling hardening-wrapper meant that I
could build iodine (as well).

Here is the result (of disabling hardening-wrapper, modifying the
rules file and doing -->
export CFLAGS="-g -O2 -Wall -fstack-protector -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2" )

hardening-check /usr/sbin/iodine
/usr/sbin/iodine:
 Position Independent Executable: no, normal executable!
 Stack protected: yes
 Fortify Source functions: yes
 Read-only relocations: no, not found!
 Immediate binding: no, not found!

Interesting. Hum I will have a play with this later.
However, you can see that it should really be compiled with -fPIC and

Um, well I could see if they would accept a patch I could make up soon...
The problem is / was they closed the bug saying it was a python issue,
where they didnt' even attempt to ensure that a https connection would
be secured, through wrapping it in ssl, iirc.

Sorry?
Um. Well sure a hard coded path path not be the best thing ... if you
know how to determine the path to the ca store on a system modify the
patch to use that I guess.

It needs virtualbox to be installed. If you look at the backtrace, you
can see it is in some virtualbox method. Apparently when you have
virtualbox installed, the connection is to virtualbox(when you pass in
None).
If you dont' have virtualbox installed then the above crash will not
take place.

Here have a patch!
This obviously will break connecting to hosts which use a self-signed
certificate.
Perhaps some one else can fix this when they want it fixed ;) ?
I tested using the following config:

# Sample minimal config file.  Copy this to ~/.offlineimaprc and edit to
# suit to get started fast.

[general]
accounts = Test

[Account Test]
localrepository = Local
remoterepository = Remote

[Repository Local]
type = Maildir
localfolders = ~/Test

[Repository Remote]
type = IMAP
ssl = yes
remotehost = imap.gmail.com # this should work
#remotehost = 74.125.39.109 # this should fail
#remotehost = $putselfsignedserveraddresshere #this should fail
remoteuser = jgoerzen

For these hosts (listed here) the expected outcome matched the actual
outcome when I tried offlineimap.

Bug#604423: Acknowledgement (postgresql-common: reports the wrong version number to upgrade too)

2010-11-21 Thread dave b
Sorry I was totally out of it(wasn't paying attention) when I wrote
that bug description(original).
The bug is really this:

So I was present with a prompt when I performed some package updates today.
"Processing triggers for postgresql-common ...
dpkg: version '/usr/share/myspell/dicts' has bad syntax: invalid
character in version number
Building PostgreSQL dictionaries from installed myspell/hunspell packages...
  en_au
  en_gb
  en_us
Processing triggers for hicolor-icon-theme ..."

and the prompt told me that postgresql 8.3 is dated. Which is true.
However, the prompt informed me that I should upgrade to postgresql 9
which isn't in debian squeeze. Version 8.4 is in debian squeeze. Yes
postgresql 9 is in sid, but it isn't in squeeze.

The information displayed in the prompt was the following:

"
Please be aware that the installation of postgresql-9.0 will
automatically create a default cluster 9.0/main. If you want to
upgrade the 8.3/main cluster, you need to remove the already
existing 9.0 cluster (pg_dropcluster --stop 9.0 main, see manpage for
details). The old server and client packages are no longer supported.
After the existing clusters are upgraded, the postgresql-8.3 and
postgresql-client-8.3 packages should be removed.
"

Note I do not have postgresql 9 installed.

2010-11-21 Thread dave b
Hi I am just going to say that as a debian user, I would think that
compiling with hardening (features on by default) would be a good
thing.
It means that custom compiled applications (non-debian origin) will be
compiled with gcc hardening.

Is this really a bad thing?

Sorry what?
I think email isn't a very good medium and you misunderstood me :/

So what's kind of why i asked about how you were trying to find the bug.
Don't tell me to search through lots of C code point it out!
I don't have time for that and you seemed to know more!
We so then the question is what happens if it is 'busy' and we attempt
to use it anyways ;) ?

I am using gdm and not gdm3.
If you can give me more details as to why you think it is a kernel bug
that would be good ^ ^
(also the ordering of this bug report on the website rather weird...)

Oh snap! radeon with KMS.
So this is interesting then.
So it didn't happen when I rebooted just then. That is I now have vt7 working.
Actually imho this is an xorg or gdm bug. Because I was using kvm, the
new xorg (from squeeze well a slightly older version) and the same
kernel --> 2.6.36 on debian lenny without this problem.
So I think it may not be a kernel bug. What makes you think it is a kernel bug?

It would appear that in squeeze, that python-xml was dropped (the
source package for python-xml-dbg). So you seem to be correct for the
package in squeeze. So I guess, yes this bug is invalid (except if you
count (failing) building libxml2 from sid on lenny as an issue ^ ^ ).

Well I can tell you RIGHT NOW that I needed it. I am using debian
lenny, perhaps the package is pulled in by another dependency after
lenny? ...

Bug#599657: is this going in to squeeze?

2010-10-21 Thread dave b
is this going in to squeeze?
http://packages.qa.debian.org/x/xorg-server.html states:
"testing migration
excuses:

* 10 days old (needed 10 days)
* Ignoring block request by freeze, due to unblock request by adsb
* out of date on kfreebsd-amd64: xdmx, xdmx-tools, xnest,
xserver-common, xserver-xephyr, xserver-xorg-core,
xserver-xorg-core-dbg, xserver-xorg-core-udeb, xserver-xorg-dev, xvfb

I would very much like to see this in squeeze as I (used to) use it in lenny.

Bug#552688: actually this is a compiler level bug or feature request

2010-10-17 Thread dave b
actually this is a compiler level bug or feature request.
Story: I want to compiler packages hardened

As a User of debian
I want *anything* I compile (and packaged I install) to be compiled
with hardening options.
So that I will have some protection against security flaws.

THIS IS NOT A DPKG BUG.

Bug#552688: This seems a bit stupid

2010-10-06 Thread dave b
IMHO this is a bit silly you are denying users of debian security
features found elsewhere (at least found elsewhere in their
packages...). The point is to make the compiler hardened by default
not only packages compiled and packaged for debian.

Please see http://wiki.debian.org/Hardening and please do reconsider.
Given the (actual)patches are already in the source package for 4.4
and 4.5 (gcc) I don't see what your complaint is ?
Why carry something you won't maintain ... this doesn't make sense to me.
