It only works with okular. With pdf viewers that do not depend on libpoppler like llpp, mupdf it flawlessly works. And if there is some sysfs way to change the setting at runtime, that would be worth advertising, too. Okay, as I could not find a control for the beep in alsamixer I installed gnome-alsamixer and, yes, there is a control for the beep. (I have to ask since on a desktop there are some situations where a sound file containing a recorded beep sound is played.) The beep sounds on error (or on shutdown) E.g. I enter `sldj`, hit TAB for completion - it beeps. No matter if I am on a virtual console or in a terminal emulator. (I know that I can disable it on X with the appropriate xset setting) I use gnome with awesome as a WM. The beep sound is definitively this painful hardware beep and not a sound file. The effect is what you see: double-encoded UTF8 strings. So this is not a bug in ghc, but a bug in hledger that turned up due to the (thankfully) more sensible behaviour in ghc. You need to talk to the hledger maintainer if he already has code that works with ghc-6.12. Yes, your assumption was absolutely correct. Just yesterday a new version of hledger was announced (0.9)- with GHC 6.12 support. Now regarding the utf-8 problem everything works as it should. Accidentally I found the culprit: always during the startup of Emacs the PCM settings are changed. The library mpg123.el (an interface for mpg123) did cause this.
