Bug#671927: libpoppler-glib6: fails to render full-page background

2012-05-08 Thread henry atting
Package: libpoppler-glib6
Version: 0.16.7-3
Severity: important

Tested with pdf viewers which depend on libpoppler:
zathura, apvlv, evince, epdfview, okular

If a pdf has a full-page background picture it takes about 10-15 sec
to open the pdf but the background will not be rendered at all.
It only works with okular.

With pdf viewers that do not depend on libpoppler like llpp, mupdf it
flawlessly works.

If that works, maybe 2 (mutable using the software mixer) would be a

This works indeed. Becaus I could not unload it (got a message that it
is still in use) I put these two lines in /etc/rc.local... and the beep
 is gone.

Thanks. One final test: if you use beep_mode=2 (instead of beep_mode=0)
and use your usual mixing app, can you cause the beep to go away (i.e.,
is there a control for that)?

Depending on the answer, I think we should:

  * use beep_mode=2 and find some way to advertise (release notes?)
that the mixer can be used to turn the beep on and off, or

  * keep using beep_mode=1 and find some way to advertise that adding
a .conf file to /etc/modprobe.d with

   options snd_hda_intel beep_mode=0

will turn the beep off. And if there is some sysfs way to change
the setting at runtime, that would be worth advertising, too.

Meanwhile I also think it would be a good idea to turn pc speaker
beeps in general off by default, but that's a separate story (and
probably should be filed as a separate bug).

Okay, as I could not find a control for the beep in alsamixer I
installed gnome-alsamixer and, yes, there is a control for the beep.
That way I can turn the beep off.

Bug#620652: linux-image-2.6.38-2-686-bigmem: fails to disable error beep

2011-04-03 Thread henry atting
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.38-2
Severity: normal
Tags: sid

Usually as a last resort removing the pc speaker modules pcspkr and
snd_pscp effectively disables the error beep.
Not with this kernel.

In the according directories I removed `pcspkr.ko` and `snd_pcsp.ko`,
then executed `depmod -a`, then built initird with:
update-initramfs -u -k all.

Nevertheless the beep on error is still there...

 Hi Henry,

Hi Jonathan,

In the according directories I removed `pcspkr.ko` and `snd_pcsp.ko`,
then executed `depmod -a`, then built initird with:
 update-initramfs -u -k all.

Nevertheless the beep on error is still there...

Could you be more specific? What version did not have this problem?
What do you do to provoke the beep? (I have to ask since on a desktop
there are some situations where a sound file containing a recorded
 beep sound is played.)

The beep sounds on error (or on shutdown) E.g. I enter `sldj`, hit TAB for
completion
- it beeps. No matter if I am on a virtual console or in a terminal
emulator. (I know that I can disable it on X with the appropriate xset
setting)
I use gnome with awesome as a WM. The beep sound is definitively this
painful hardware beep and not a sound file.
Before this kernel removing the mentioned modules always helped, my last kernel
before 2.6.38.* was 2.6.32-5-686-bigmem

[ 18.175066] input: HDA Digital PCBeep as
 /devices/pci:00/:00:1b.0/input/input13

Hmm, this is interesting. What happens if you unload snd_hda_intel
 and reload it with beep_mode=0?

   # modprobe -r snd_hda_intel
   # modprobe snd_hda_intel beep_mode=0

If that works, maybe 2 (mutable using the software mixer) would be a
 good default for SND_HDA_INPUT_BEEP_MODE.

This works indeed. Becaus I could not unload it (got a message that it
is still in use) I put these two lines in /etc/rc.local... and the beep
is gone.

 Thanks for reporting,
 Jonathan

Thanks,
henry

Could you please try narrowing down which was the last version that
worked correctly for you? It'd help if I had some simple test case
for this. It's something more subtle if putStrLn indeed outputs
  correct UTF-8.

The version which works (downloaded as binary from
 http://hledger.org/binaries/) is: hledger-0.7 with vty

The current version that does not work correctly (installed with `cabal
 install`) is: hledger-0.8 with vty

If I use the simple ncurses ui the euro sign and umlauts are displayed
 correctly. (in both versions)

I assume that hledger-0.7 is built with ghc-6.10 and that you built 0.8
 with ghc-6.12.

Without looking at the code, this is what happening most likely: The
hledger code did not actually change. In both instances in transforms
unicode characters into UTF8-encoded byte sequences (still represented
as [Char]), and prints them using putStrLn.

ghc-6.10 would print these byte-for-byte, and they turn up correctly on
 your computer.

ghc-6.12 is smarter and transforms them to the local locale, in your
case, UTF8. The effect is what you see: double-encoded UTF8 strings.

So this is not a bug in ghc, but a bug in hledger that turned up due to
the (thankfully) more sensible behaviour in ghc.

You need to talk to the hledger maintainer if he already has code that
 works with ghc-6.12.

Yes, your assumption was absolutely correct.
Just yesterday a new version of hledger was announced (0.9)- with GHC
6.12 support. Now regarding the utf-8 problem everything works as it
should.

Greetings and thanks,
henry

please elaborate: What program are you installing, in what way, how does
 it fail.

I built programs with ghc6-6.12 that work much better WRT unicode now.

One program that fails is `hledger'. (http://hledger.org/)
I installed it with `cabal install hledger'. First it seemingly builds
correctly. Then a simple `./hledger' should display my ledger file with
accounts and the according totals -- with the euro currency symbol.
It should look like this:

€4.50 misc

But no, the currency symbol is substituted:

â¬4.50 misc

In ghci:

Bug#520739: cups: printing with brother hl-2030 does not work

2009-03-22 Thread henry atting
Package: cups
Version: 1.3.8-1lenny4.1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

As of late I cannot print with brother HL-2030 anymore. I assume an
upgrade of cups must be the reason for I did not change any setting.
The print job stay for some time in the print queue, then disappear
and are regarded as completed.
The printer is idle, accepting jobs.
From a debian/lenny which uses the same printer in the network,
printing is still no problem.
Reinstalling the appropriate drivers did not help either.

Accidentally I found the culprit: always during the startup of Emacs
the PCM settings are changed. The library mpg123.el
(an interface for mpg123) did cause this. Don't know why but it anyway
is not an alsa bug.

Great thanks

Hmm, we shuold check the diffs... Did sound worked here?

Sound basically works, yes. And as far as I can see now the only
setting which is not to be stored is the setting for `PCM'.

Do you consider this problem as a regression? Or did you use a
non-regular syntax in your old .Xmodmap that happened to work with older
X packages by chance and don't anymore with recent packages?

Mmh, I don't know what exactly caused this problem. I do modify now the
Capslock key in xorg.conf with

 Option XkbOptionscompose:caps

This is even better than modifying it via ~/.Xmodmap. So as far as I am
concerned it's a change for the better.
