Ran out of time: but will have to do something soon. Installed Ubuntu and that
went
well but have mucked up the grub settings so will probably reinstall both
at some time in the next month or so. Will take the opportunity to install
debian package by package and see if I can fix this irritation while I am
at it

Apologies

Can you point me to a webpage where I can follow a recipe on how to do this?

FWIW At the moment I have yet to install /etc/X11/xorg.conf

2010-09-02 Thread henrybrem
Removed most of gnome and replaced it with xfce4 (initially I was planning
to replace all of gnome with icewm simply to see what impact that would
have)

Oddly enough:
- System froze as soon as she used to file a shortcut on the desktop
(but this time mouse could move but no clicks registered. Nothing
from the keyboard)
- When the system froze, cpu utilisation was normal, as opposed to
99% with gnome

I have been googling this morning. I do not feel confident about installing
the restricted nvidia drivers, so will probably re-install ubuntu in a dual
boot and see what I can working on debian in the evenings

Used this originally. If I check the table "Portfolio" then HEXA-B.ST shows
as currency SEK.

Ran this and it worked.

Many thanks

Oddly enough I received the following error messages

Use of uninitialized value $b[2] in join or string at
/usr/share/perl5/Finance/YahooQuote.pm line 88.
Ignoring symbol ^XCV with unparseable date
Ignoring symbol ^XEU with unparseable date

I will come back to you on this as I want to check my data first: it
could be due to sloppy entering of data.

Willing and able. Let me come back to you later: I have copied the
database (I am using sqlite3) and am going through cleaning out old
records (eg shares sold are marked as "sold" and hence I can track bad
decisions).

PS I did buy a book on Perl as I wanted to understand the program as I
find it incredibly useful. But got lost ...

Bug#532743: beancounter: Adding Foreign Currencies

2009-06-11 Thread henrybrem
Package: beancounter
Version: 0.8.8
Severity: normal

I am having problem adding the currency "SEK" (Swedish Kroner) to
beancounter.

- I added the stock HEXA-B.ST quoted on the Stockholm exchange
- I then ran the command "beancounter update"
- I then ran the command "beancounter --extrafx SEK"
- I then ran the command "beancounter fxbackpopulate SEK"

and various permutations and combinations of the above with and without
dates

The only error message I get is
** Ignoring SEK which is not currently known to the internal tables

If I check the currency tables then the only currencies shown are EUR
and CAD.

Question: how do I add SEK (and a couple of other currencies)?

Bug#526431: cron-apt: Updates but does not upgrade. Logfiles

2009-05-04 Thread henrybrem
Ola

Many thanks for your help

I attach

- Logfile.txt.

This should be the clean system with the failing lines in
sources.list removed

- Logfile_2.txt

This is with a bad entry in sources.list

One minor comment: aptitude (apt-get) did not fail because of the
problem in the sources.list. If with the bad sources.list, I ran

aptitude update
aptitude full-upgrade

Then all worked, albeit with error messages :)

The problem seemed to be when called from cron-apt the notification of
error messages blocked the program from running further

No other changes

Update ran
Upgrade did not: this morning "aptitude full-upgrade" installed new

ie no effect of the change.

Bug#526431: cron-apt: Updates but does not upgrade

2009-05-01 Thread henrybrem

Package: cron-apt
Version: 0.6.8
Severity: normal

After updating from Lenny to Squeeze last week, I realised that while packages
were being downloaded, cron-apt was not upgrading any packages. Cron-apt
was working normally on Lenny

My /etc/config file is the following

APTCOMMAND=/usr/bin/aptitude
RUNSLEEP=3600
MINTMPDIRSIZE=10
ACTIONDIR="/etc/cron-apt/action.d"
NOLOCKWARN=""
ERROR="/var/log/cron-apt/error"
TEMP="/var/log/cron-apt/temp"
LOG="/var/log/cron-apt/log"
MAIL="/var/log/cron-apt/mail"
MAILTO="root"
MAILON="always"
DEBUG="output"
OPTIONS="-o quiet=1"

DIFFIGNORE="^\(Get:[[:digit:]]\+\|Hit\|Ign\|Del\|Fetched\|Freed\|Reading\)[[:space:]]"

My Var/log/cron-apt directory contains a file "log". No contents

/var/log/syslog contains the following

May  1 04:51:11 newdebian cron-apt: CRON-APT RUN [/etc/cron-apt/config]: Fri
May  1 04:00:02 BST 2009
May  1 04:51:11 newdebian cron-apt: CRON-APT SLEEP: 3008, Fri May  1 04:50:10
BST 2009
May  1 04:51:11 newdebian cron-apt: CRON-APT ACTION: 0-update
May  1 04:51:11 newdebian cron-apt: CRON-APT LINE: /usr/bin/aptitude update -o
quiet=2
May 1 04:51:11 newdebian cron-apt: Reading package lists...

/etc/cron-apt/action.d/
0-update contains
update -o quiet=2
3-download contains
autoclean -y
dist-upgrade -y -o APT::Get::Show-Upgraded=true

Ie it seems that the cron-apt is running the update but not the download
commands. I have tried fiddling with commands but the output remains the
same

Not sure if this is a bug, but any assistance would be much appreciated

Bug#513610: openoffice.org: Persistant Recovery Problem

2009-01-30 Thread henrybrem
Package: openoffice.org
Version: 1:2.4.1-17
Severity: important

Opened four readonly XLS files and then tried to copy the data into a new
spreadsheet
Openoffice crashed
Whenever I tried to reopen openoffice, it tried to restore the files, and
crashed again

Following on from http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?p=156335#156335
I deleted the recovery files and the back up. Openoffice crashed again

moved the entire directory .openoffice2.org and started openoffice again

I could access my spreadsheets but then on setting the default parameters,
openoffice crashed again

deleted the entire .openoffice directory and repeated.

Again it crashed.

I am now about to purge the entire system of openoffice and reinstall
