Yes I do. I just did sudo /etc/init.d/snort stop, and this is the very last thing snort says before terminating, right after the "Snort exiting" message. > This message is quite > strange since root runs the stop script. That "permission denied" message > does not make much sense. I just looked for the PID file complained about in the error message, and after I shut down Snort it's not there (in spite of the error message). The only thing that's still there is a snort_eth0.pid.lck. If I start Snort again, it says in the log "Writing PID "5366" to file "/var/run//snort_eth0.pid"", and the PID file appears. Cheers //Johan

Bug#457432: Results from including /lib/.+/
If you define at least one way of including a file by mistake I'll try to come up with something. Last time I attempted this I verified that all newly searched directories had files in them that were accessed long enough ago that they obviously hadn't been updated by any automated scheme. Would that be enough verification? Bug#120152: Why isn't the merge patch being merged?
Raphael, since you say that Jarno's current patch applies fine to the current version of dpkg, would it be possible for you to merge it? While waiting for somebody to implement a three way merge, I'd much prefer a two way merge (Jarno's patch) to nothing (which is what we have now). Please merge the patch? Bug#453096: tar: This does not look like a tar archive
Package: tar Version: 1.19.1 I normally use the R-click context menu in Nautilus and select 'create archive' to create tar.gz archives with File Roller. Since I upgraded Tar from 1.16.2 (stable) to 1.19.1 (testing) I get an error (in a dialog from File Roller, I suppose): 'An error occurred while adding files to the archive' When, in the dialog, I check the command line output I see this: 'tar: This does not look like a tar archive' 'tar: Error exit delayed from previous error' The package IS, however, created and can be extracted without errors. When I create the archive on the command line ( tar -cf test.tar * ) the error does not occur, so possibly File Roller is involved here. thanks, -- = Johan Spee = www.coonsden.com GPG ID: 2B743F81 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#450649: 445215 and 450649 are related
Bug 445215 is about egrep being a ton slower than doing the same thing in PERL. Bug 450649 is about egrep spending 50% of its time clearing memory using a for() loop rather than memset(). Bug#81829: Home-based work for you
18 Stanford Scientific Review successfully demonstrated their use as highly sensitive toxic gas sensors, and with Professor Calvin Quate (Electrical Engineering), has commercialized nanotubes as scanning probe tips to increase probe resolution and tip durability. An area that Dai has just begun exploring is the drug delivery potential of carbon nanotubes. "The tube has a large surface area and is empty inside. So either you can attach the drug to the outer surface, or fill it up like a test tube," says Dai. Furthermore, multiple functional molecules can be attached to the surface: "Say, a molecule that fluoresces to tell you where the drug is in the cell and an antibody that specifically targets the site of drug delivery." So far, Dai reports that his research finds nanotubes to be quite "biologically friendly." Our organization offers a very competitive salary to the successful candidate, along with an unrivalled career progression chance. McGehee makes his solar cells by mixing a titania gel precursor and a special semiconducting polymer, which self-assemble into titania (TiO2) films with polymer-filled pores 20 nm in diameter. Currently, McGehee is still working to improve the efficiency of his solar cells and their resistance to degradation over time in sunlight. "Right now, we're at 2% efficiency, and we want to get to 15%." 15%? That might seem low, but silicon-based cells operate at 12% efficiency, and most importantly, as McGehee points out, "there's a lot of sunlight out there." 18 Stanford Scientific Review successfully demonstrated their use as highly sensitive toxic gas sensors, and with Professor Calvin Quate (Electrical Engineering), has commercialized nanotubes as scanning probe tips to increase probe resolution and tip durability. Bug#450859: Fwd: Already reported upstream
Don't know if you got this, I'm not really friends with Debbugs. Nautilus burns a data CD when asked to burn an audio CD. Setting gconf key /desktop/gnome/volume_manager/autoburn_audio_cd_command to an audio CD burning program fixes this. I successfully used Serpentine to burn an audio CD on my testing system about a week ago. Serpentine is what Ubuntu uses as well. YMMV. I suggest having g-v-m either recommending or depending on Serpentine, and having "serpentine" as the default value for the above gconf key. Bug#197304: Have control send a notification to maintainers
Can't control just send a simple notification to the maintaner(s) of the bug's new package, and possibly to the maintaners to the old package as well? That notification should contain at least the bug number and the bug title. That way they would at least be *notified* that they have a new bug to deal with, even though the e-mail may not contain all information they need. Cool! The reason I thought it didn't was that when I looked at http://bugs.debian.org/450859 and enabled "useless messages" I didn't see any message about anything having been sent to the maintainers of gnome-volume-manager (the new package). Bug#270514: popularity-contest: Support hinting for what files are counted
Continuing this discussion from ages ago... Petter, I like your suggestion of adding '/usr/lib/.+/.+' (note that I removed your ending / though) to files scanned by popularity-contest. Now that I look at the script (popularity-contest-1.42) and look at timestamps on my own system it seems that adding these would be beneficial and have no bad side-effects: /lib/.+/ ^/usr/include/ Those places contain files that are older than 40 days on my system, which should cover both boot-up accesses and monthly ones (I have a workstation running anacron). That would make bubblemon (and a bunch of other stuff) get proper vote counts, without adding any false positives AFAICT. And would be enough of a fix to close this bug (for which I am the original reporter). Answers to some issues in the old discussion: One (the) reason popularity-contest doesn't scan all files is that some files get touched even though the user doesn't "use" them. All libs in /lib and /usr/lib for example get indexed by the dynamic linker when the system boots. Looking at those timestamps as "votes" would yield false positives. Putting stuff in /etc/popularity-contest.d would only be needed for packages that: 1. Isn't covered by the usual file scan. 2. Want to get proper vote statistics in the popularity contest. So creating such a file wouldn't be mandatory by any means. On the other hand it could allow package maintainers to cheat, knowingly or not. Maybe this one is different, but then it's one out of many and until someone does the work to apply it, test it, it will continue lying here. The dpkg team is quite small compared to the task represented by the hundreds of bug reports. So the time of the main committers is limited and they can't review all bugs. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#448475: deluge-torrent: Sorting by DL speed is alphabethical
Package: deluge-torrent Version: 0.5.0-2 Severity: normal Start a download. Open the "Peers" tab and wait until you have a couple of peers there. Click the "Download Speed" column header to sort by DL speed. Current results: Peers are sorted by download speed, but alpabetically, so "5.0 KB/s" is considered faster than "20.0 KB/s". The fastest peer can (and usually does) end up anywhere in the list. Expected results: Peers should be sorted by download speed, so that the fastest peer is at one end of the list. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22-2-686 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=sv_SE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=sv_SE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages deluge-torrent depends on: ii libboost-date-time1.33. 1.33.1-10set of date-time libraries based o ii libboost-filesystem1.33 1.33.1-10filesystem operations (portable pa ii libboost-program-option 1.33.1-10program options library for C++ ii libboost-regex1.33.11.33.1-10regular expression library for C++ ii libboost-thread1.33.1 1.33.1-10portable C++ multi-threading ii libc6 2.6.1-1+b1 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgcc1 1:4.2.2-3GCC support library ii libstdc++6 4.2.2-3 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii notification-daemon 0.3.7-1 a daemon that displays passive pop ii python 2.4.4-6 An interactive high-level object-o ii python-glade2 2.10.6-1 GTK+ bindings: Glade support ii python-gtk2 2.10.6-1 Python bindings for the GTK+ widge ii python-notify 0.1.1-1 Python bindings for libnotify ii python-support 0.7.4automated rebuilding support for p ii python-xdg 0.15-1.1 A python library to access freedes ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-6 compression library - runtime deluge-torrent recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#523923: rsnapshot: Cron and anacron friendly launcher script
Package: rsnapshot Version: 1.3.0-2 Severity: wishlist Hi! Here's a cron and anacron friendly launcher script for rsnapshot. Just drop it into /etc/cron.hourly and everything will be taken care of. When called it checks how long ago the different backups (monthly, weekly, daily, hourly) were successfully performed, and performs the relevant one, if any. It saves its state in /var/spool/rsnapshot. It runs the "hourly" job every four hours and the others at the obvious intervals. It's doesn't care about any command line parameters, and it doesn't read any configuration files. I've been running with this for a couple of weeks now, and it works splendidly. Bug#470299: bubblemon: Unexpectly dies
Hi! I've just released Bubblemon 2.0.10, which produces a dump file ($HOME/bubblemon-crash-log.txt) when this situation occurs. I had a thorough look at the data in bug 470299 and I can't say what's happening :-(. netload_reportNetworkLoad() calls netload_reportBack() saying that 40800 bytes have been sent. netload_reportBack() seems to receive the information that 18446744073708109824 bytes have been sent. Those two numbers are obviously not the same. This might mean different things (and optimizations might have made the received value show up wrong), but ~/bubblemon-crash-log.txt will at least contain detailed information about which exact values made the assertion triggered. Also, 2.0.10 now won't build unless it's warning free, so it's not impossible that the actual problem will be caught already at compile time. 2.0.10 can be downloaded from here: https://savannah.nongnu.org/files/?group=bubblemon Please give it a whirl and let me know how it works out for you! Can you do "make clean && make -k" and send me the full output of that? In that case I could fix all AMD64 specific warnings in one go. There could very well be warnings about whatever it is that's causing your problems, so fixing all warnings (now that they are properly enabled) is high on my list. So bytes sent on the livebox interface suddenly goes down from 7400435 to 60403. Either that's because libgtop reports strange numbers, or it's because I'm messing up somehow. To rule out libgtop I've written a program that measures network load like bubblemon is doing, but this program just prints the network load to stdout. Build it like this (it should build without warnings): gcc -Werror -Wall -Wextra $(pkg-config --cflags --libs libgtop-2.0) -g -O0 netload.c -o netload Run it like this: ./netload livebox > netload.out Then start a bubblemon and wait for it to crash. When bubblemon crashes, please send me a copy of your netload.out. //Johan 2009/1/2 Jean-Luc Coulon (f5ibh) : > Le 02.01.2009 11:35:06, Johan Walles a écrit : >>Please try using the attached bubblemon.c instead of the one you have >>currently and let me know how it works out. >> >>It should get the build through, and we'll hopefully get some debug >>data from it next time it crashes. >> >> Regards //Johan >> > > It builds and it crashes. > I got only a small bubblemon-crash-log.txt with > > > This file contains debugging information for Bubblemon. No problem there. I'd like to rule out compiler optimization problems as well. They aren't likely, but they are easy to test for, so please build with: make clean ; make CFLAGS=-O0 && sudo make install Then please tell me whether that bubblemon crashes as well. Bug#470299: bubblemon: Unexpectly dies
Not a compiler problem then, let's shoot for memory-handling problems. They can be easily found using Valgrind, and are a mess to track down otherwise: * Build unoptimized and with debug metadata to improve stack traces: make clean ; make CFLAGS="-O0 -g" * Install Valgrind if you don't have it already: sudo apt-get install valgrind * Remove bubblemon from any panel. * Launch bubblemon in valgrind: valgrind ./src/bubblemon-gnome2 * Wait for 20 seconds. This step is really important. When running inside Valgrind, bubblemon needs some time to start up. The only way to notice if this step is done is to have another system load meter, and when it goes back down to 0, you can go on to the next step. Nothing will appear on any panel until the next step. Unless you wait long enough, another bubblemon will be started outside of Valgrind. * Add bubblemon to a panel somewhere. You'll notice that it's running inside Valgrind by that it's really slow to start up. It seems like Valgrind JITs things at least on IA32, since for me showing the tooltip or the menu for the first time are really slow, but then get a lot faster. * After bubblemon crashes, please send me all output you have in the terminal window. Hopefully Valgrind will provide one or more stack traces helping track down the source of the error. If you get stack traces with lots of ??s in them, you might need to install the gnome-dbg and libc6-dbg packages to be able to get proper stack traces through GNOME and libc code. If this doesn't help, *then* we'll have to start looking at instrumented builds. Bug#518583: pigz: Please provide an alternative for gzip
Package: pigz Version: 2.1.4-1 Severity: wishlist The package description says that pigz is a "fully functional replacement for gzip". As such, couldn't you provide an /etc/alternatives setting for it so that if I install pigz I can launch it by just typing "gzip"? Bug#518608: debsums: Please use O_NOATIME when opening files for checksumming
Package: debsums Version: 2.0.41 Severity: wishlist Please use O_NOATIME when opening files for checksumming. This will increase performance, and it will help people who use atime to determine when a program was last executed (like popularity-contest). "man 2 open" says: O_NOATIME (Since Linux 2.6.8) Do not update the file last access time (st_atime in the inode) when the file is read(2). This flag is intended for use by indexing or backup programs, where its use can significantly reduce the amount of disk activity. "indexing or backup programs" sounds just like debsums to me :-).
