2014-11-14 Thread rosea grammostola
It's just so irritating that things can move so slowly in Debian sometimes.
I really like 'Debian' for being so focussing on good packaging with proper
license etc., but sometimes it just don't have a point, like in this case.

It's about some presets for AMS, a synth. I mean it's no base software or
something, just presets. It's clear that the makers of those presets wants
to share them with a GPL license.

I like to help Debian, but if it's so cumbersome to report a simple
request, then I'll think twice the next time to summit a bugreport. Then
asking the maintainers of Kxstudio or AVLinux would be a better shot I
guess. I should care less.

Bug#769541: ams: please add the 'Atte-Jensen-instrumentpatches' to the Ams package

2014-11-14 Thread rosea grammostola
What do you guys want? If you don't want to add it, perfect, but just say
it. Don't start a nitpicking game about some instrumentsetting patches! I
just want to make Debian a bit better, and share some 'user info' which
could help others to make music with Debian.

I was pretty clear about the fact that those users have no problem (read
they like to share their patches with others) for you to add it to the
package AMS. I asked them which license via email, they say GPL. So make it
the GPL version you want, and don't make a problem about nothing.

The Non DAW is a powerful, reliable and fast modular Digital Audio Workstation
system, released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It utilizes the
JACK Audio Connection Kit for inter-application audio I/O and the FLTK GUI
toolkit for a fast and lightweight user interface.

The Non Mixer is a powerful, reliable and fast modular Digital Audio Mixer,
released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It utilizes the JACK Audio
Connection Kit for inter-application audio I/O and the FLTK GUI toolkit for a
fast and lightweight user interface.

The Non Sequencer is a powerful real-time, pattern-based MIDI sequencer for
Linux--released under the GPL. Filling the void left by countless DAWs, piano-
roll editors, and other purely performance based solutions, it is a
compositional tool--one that transforms MIDI music-making on Linux from a
complex nightmare into a pleasurable, efficient, and streamlined process.

The Non Session Manager is a robust session management API and implementation
allowing for faster and vastly simplified workflows in Linux audio. NSM finally
delivers on the broken promise made by LASH et al--for Non anyway. So read the
at API documentation and get to patching your favorite applications so
everybody can feel the relief!

Bug#628713: qtractor: Build-Depend on libjack-dev only

2011-05-31 Thread rosea grammostolla
Package: qtractor

Severity: normal

Build-Depend on libjack-dev only

libjack-dev is natively provided by jackd1 and hence pulled in on the
buildds. This is what we want: all packages in Debian will be built
against jackd1.

If somebody happens to run jackd2 on his workstation, then
libjack-jackd2-dev will (virtually) provide libjack-dev, in other words,
those who have jackd2 are still able to compile the package while the
canonical default for the buildds is jackd1.

Long story short: Build-Depend must always be "libjack-dev". Nothing
more, nothing less, except for packages really requiring jackd2 (the
only one right now that I'm aware of is ladish)

Bug#620349: cdbs: fails when building in parallel

2011-04-01 Thread rosea grammostolla
Package: cdbs
Version: 0.4.92
Severity: normal

cdbs: fails when building in parallel

When building cdbs at the opensuse buildservice (obs) the package fails. Obs is
using parallel building by default.

Here is some debug info:

> > PASS: distutils-8.sh
> > FAIL: distutils-9.sh
> > FAIL: distutils-10.sh
> > FAIL: distutils-11.sh
> > PASS: ant-1.sh
> >
> > 3 of 30 tests failed
> >
Checking the current build failures on the linked project, the tests
actually pass all fine (even though it seems to be only 28 checks)

The builds abort due to a 'build appears to be stuck' error => trying a
local build shows that bash is actually dieing:

 \_ /usr/bin/make install-am
\_ /usr/bin/make install-exec-am install-data-am
  \_ [bash]
  \_ [bash]
  \_ [bash]

So the clue is actually to find out why bash defunts on us in our build
environment.

A small verification with osc build -j 1 shows that once more, debian
stuff just does not work properly in parallel builds...

Here is a comment on the obs mailinglist:

> And what would the packager do to enable parallel builds ?
He would do some bash scripting in the rules file to get the # of parallel
builds to from the DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS env variable and then calls make with the
parsed argument which is butt ugly to say it politely.

IMHO the debian way plain sucks and shouldn't be repeated. Instead some
"DISABLE_PARALLEL_BUILD=1" in the packages meta data is much preferable.

See also http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-source.html section 4.9.1

(besides that parallel builds being broken _IS_ a bug in the packages build
system which should be filed upstream and not at debian)

comment by author:
"The organ (by design) is very computationally heavy. Therefor it really needs
to be compiled with SSE. I don't really think you can even run it on a machine
without SSE, because such processors tend to be too slow anyway. Also, it would
make sense to package a more efficient version of the dsp code. The actual dsp
is written in faust and the intermediate (generated) c++ file in the
distributed 1.0.0 is (iirc) geared towards fast compiling, not efficiency.

If it's possible to release optimized deb's, I am more than willing to help you
reach this goal. The build script is quite rudimentary. Can you point me
towards things you'd like to see in the build system?

I have some improvements in SVN anyway which need releasing, so we could work
together to do a more robust release compatible with debian packaging."

* Package name: fluxus

* URL : http://www.pawfal.org/fluxus/
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: Scheme
Description : Rapid prototyping, playing and learning environment for 3D
graphics, sound and games.

Fluxus is an environment which allows you to quickly make live animation and
audio
programs, and change them constantly and flexibly. This idea of constant change
(flux) is
where it's name comes from.
Fluxus does this with the aid of the Scheme programming language, which is
designed for
flexibility; and an interface which only needs to provide you with program code
floating above
the resulting visual output. This interface enables fluxus to be used for
livecoding, the practice
of programming as a performance art form. Most users of fluxus are naturally
livecoders, and
some write fluxus scripts in front of audiences, as well as using it to rapid
prototype and
design new programs for performance and art installation.

* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C, C++
Description : program for time-stretching the audio

Program for stretching the audio. It is suitable only for extreme sound
stretching of the audio (like 50x) and for applying special effects by
"spectral smoothing" the sounds. It can transform any sound/music to a texture.

Features:

* It produces high quality extreme sound stretching. While most sound
stretching software sounds bad when trying to stretch the sounds a lot, this
one is optimized for extreme sound stretching. So, the stretch amount is
unlimited.
* You can play the stretched sound in real-time (including the possibility
to "freeze" the sound) or you can render the whole sound or a part of it to
audio files
* It has many post-processing effects, like: filters, pitch/frequency
shifters
* Support for WAV, OGG VORBIS files and MP3 files

Description : virtual MIDI keyboard for JACK MIDI

virtual MIDI keyboard - a program that allows you to send JACK MIDI events
(play ;-) using your PC keyboard. It's somewhat similar to vkeybd, except it
uses JACK MIDI instead of ALSA, and the default keyboard mapping is much better
- it uses the same layout as trackers (like Impulse Tracker) did, so you have
two and half octaves under your fingers.

Bug#560590: live-helper: make it able to edit/customize fstab

2009-12-11 Thread rosea grammostola
Package: live-helper
Version: 2.0~a2-1 0
Severity: wishlist

Make it possible to edit/customize fstab for the ISO and after installation
with d-i

I want to make an pro audio optimized live iso which is also able to be
installed.

In the world of linux audio, JACK (jackd) is an important tool and the readme
of it says that I need to add a line in fstab to make it work properly:

/Welcome to JACK, the Jack Audio Connection Kit.

Please see the website (http://jackit.sf.net/) for more information.

NOTE: If you are using reiserfs or ext3fs or anything except ext2fs
for the directory where JACK puts its temporary files (/tmp by
default), then the JACK team recommends that you do *one* of the
following:

Mount a tmpfs on /tmp. You should have a lot of swap space available
in case some programs try to write very large files there.
In your /etc/fstab add a line:

  none/tmptmpfs defaults0 0

You'll probably want to reboot here, or kill X then 'mount /tmp'.

 OR

Alternatively, you can do this without affecting your /tmp:

# mkdir /mnt/ramfs

[edit /etc/fstab and add the following line]
none /mnt/ramfs tmpfs defaults 0 0

Then add --with-default-tmpdir=/mnt/ramfs to the JACK configure
line when you build it. No clients need to be recompiled.

--

_Failure to do one of these could lead to extremely poor performance from JACK,_
since its normal operation will cause bursts of disk I/O that are
completely unnecessary. This suggestion can also be used by ext2fs
users if they wish./

Building a ubuntu lucid iso

I have this in chroot:

# $LH_LINUX_FLAVOURS: set kernel flavour to use

When having this settings I get this error:

# $LH_DEBIAN_INSTALLER_DISTRIBUTION: set debian-installer suite

If I have this one disabled:
# $LH_DEBIAN_INSTALLER: set debian-installer

LH_DEBIAN_INSTALLER="disabled"

I don't get that error.

I hope to be able to clean that up by minimizing the -rt series (e.g.
the first broken out patch consists usually of various bits from the

Hhhm, well, I spottet a problem. The thing is that linux-rt does many
deep changes in the kernel and I won't be able to support the harder
problems. And upstream probably won't help because the Debian rt-kernel
isn't a vanilla rt-kernel. Moreover even the broken out rt-patch isn't
nicely sorted (e.g. bisectable, some patches undo changes of other
patches earier in the series etc. pp), so I fear the Debian kernel team
isn't filled with enthusiasm when asked to add an rt variant.

I already thought about packaging debian-kernel + rt for Debian and
vanilla-kernel + rt for a non-Debian package repository such that it's
easy for bug reporters to try out a vanilla kernel. But that still needs
more work.

OK, the vanilla-kernel + rt is done. See

for an announcment and

Mmh I added the sid repo, but can't find the RT kernel. What is going
wrong here?

Bug#521893: realtime kernel for Debian

2009-06-04 Thread Grammostola Rosea

Uwe Kleine-König wrote:

Hi,

I was wondering about how far are we with implementing a RT kernel in
Debian... Some progress here? Would be nice.

The patch I created that "fits" on Debian's vanilla kernel creates
conflicts on the sources with the Debian patches.
I hope to be able to clean that up by minimizing the -rt series (e.g.
the first broken out patch consists usually of various bits from the
-tip tree that are (AFAIK) not all needed.)

So just have some more patience.

How are things going? Just interest...

But that still needs
more work.

I currently investigate how the Debian kernel packages are created. Any
help is welcome. Probably the first step will be to create a vanilla-rt
package, but that wont be accepted to go into Debian main.

Just trying to keep thinks a bit alive here ;)

How are things going Uwe?

Kind regards,

\r

Bug#521498: (no subject)

2009-03-29 Thread Grammostola Rosea

   from ardour.org

   about 2.8

Distributable VST Support (most for packagers)

Ardour now uses the Vestige header file to allow compilation with VST
support on Linux. We believe, given the reverse engineering of the
Vestige header, that there is no more need to fetch the VST SDK from
Steinberg in order to build Ardour with VST support, and it is possible
to distribute all source code associated with VST support. This means
that distributions are free to compile and release packages of Ardour
with VST support. Linux Packagers: *please* do not call such packages
"Ardour". They should *always* be named in a way to make it clear that
they contain VST support - Ardour with VST support is not actually a
Linux program at all (its a small Windows executable that is linked
against some Linux libraries, run by a shell script that invokes Wine).
It is critical that users have the choice to install 1 or the other (or
both, if possible). To repeat, Ardour with VST support should not be
packaged as "Ardour". I suggest "ArdourVST" (or ardourvst, for the
case-insensitive). Please note: VST is a trademark of Steinberg Soft-
und Hardware GmbH.

Bug#520241: Please package dssi-vst for Debian

2009-03-18 Thread rosea
Package: dssi-vst
Version: 0.8-1
Severity: wishlist

http://breakfastquay.com/dssi-vst/

dssi-vst is an adapter that allows users of Linux audio software to take VST
and VSTi audio effects and instrument plugins compiled for Windows, and load
them into native LADSPA or DSSI plugin hosts. Plugins run at full speed for
most audio processing, although their user interfaces are slower because of the
Windows emulation.

dssi-vst can also be used to run 32-bit Windows VST plugins in a 64-bit Linux
host.

dssi-vst requires Wine libraries for Windows compatibility, and is therefore
best obtained directly from a Linux distribution repository that can provide
all of the required libraries at the time of installation. Installing dssi-vst
without a distribution package can be quite tricky to do.

dssi-vst is free, open source software written by Chris Cannam. It is
distributed under the GNU General Public License, with a special exception to
permit redistributing it in binary form when built with the non-free Steinberg
VST SDK. (The default build does not use the non-free SDK, and so is completely
GPL.) No proprietary license is available.

WhySynth is a versatile softsynth which operates as a plugin for the
Disposable Soft Synth Interface (DSSI). A brief list of features:

- 4 oscillators, 2 filters, 3 LFOs, and 5 envelope generators per
voice.

- 10 oscillator modes: minBLEP, wavecycle, asynchronous granular,
three FM modes, waveshaper, noise, PADsynth, and phase
distortion.

- 6 filter modes.

- flexible modulation and mixdown options.

DSSI is a plugin API for software instruments (soft synths) with
user interfaces, permitting them to be hosted in-process by audio
applications. More information on DSSI can be found at:

WhySynth is something of a mongrel, combining bits from Xsynth-DSSI,
hexter, Csound, Mats Olsson's MSS, and various other programs, with
inspiration from a number of my favorite long-hair-days synths
(Matrix 6, ESQ-1, K4), and wavecycle data resynthesized from Claude
Kaber's Virtual K4 samples and //christian's exegesis of the Ensoniq
SQ-80 wavetable ROMs. See the enclosed file AUTHORS for more
details.

WhySynth is written by Sean Bolton, and copyright (c) 2008 under the
GNU General Public License, version 2 or later. See here for
details. While this software is 'free' within the requirements of
this license,

Bug#520233: lv2: Please package LV2 and LV2 plugins for Debian

2009-03-18 Thread rosea
Package: lv2
Severity: wishlist

http://lv2plug.in/

LV2 is a standard for plugins and matching host applications, mainly targeted
at audio processing and generation.

LV2 is a simple but extensible successor of LADSPA, intended to address the
limitations of LADSPA which many applications have outgrown.
Why LV2?

While LADSPA has been quite successful with many plugins and hosts, it is quite
limited and can't be extended without breaking existing implementations. LV2 in
contrast is designed with extensibility in mind right from start.

Bug#520230: sonicvisualer: Please package sonic visualiser for Debian

2009-03-18 Thread rosea
Package: sonicvisualer
Severity: wishlist

Please package sonic visualiser for debian

http://www.sonicvisualiser.org/

Sonic Visualiser contains features for the following:

* Load audio files in WAV, Ogg and MP3 formats, and view their waveforms.
* Look at audio visualisations such as spectrogram views, with interactive
adjustment of display parameters.
* Annotate audio data by adding labelled time points and defining segments,
point values and curves.
* Overlay annotations on top of one another with aligned scales, and
overlay annotations on top of waveform or spectrogram views.
* View the same data at multiple time resolutions simultaneously (for
close-up and overview).
* Run feature-extraction plugins to calculate annotations automatically,
using algorithms such as beat trackers, pitch detectors and so on.
* Import annotation layers from various text file formats.
* Import note data from MIDI files, view it alongside other frequency
scales, and play it with the original audio.
* Play back the audio plus synthesised annotations, taking care to
synchronise playback with display.
* Select areas of interest, optionally snapping to nearby feature
locations, and audition individual and comparative selections in seamless loops.
* Time-stretch playback, slowing right down or speeding up to a tiny
fraction or huge multiple of the original speed while retaining a synchronised
display.
* Export audio regions and annotation layers to external files.

The design goals for Sonic Visualiser are:

* To provide the best available core waveform and spectrogram audio
visualisations for use with substantial files of music audio data.
* To facilitate ready comparisons between different kinds of data, for
example by making it easy to overlay one set of data on another, or display the
same data in more than one way at the same time.
* To be straightforward. The user interface should be simpler to learn and
to explain than the internal data structures. In this respect, Sonic Visualiser
aims to resemble a consumer audio application.
* To be responsive, slick, and enjoyable. Even if you have to wait for your
results to be calculated, you should be able to do something else with the
audio data while you wait. Sonic Visualiser is pervasively multithreaded, loves
multiprocessor and multicore systems, and can make good use of fast processors
with plenty of memory.
* To handle large data sets. The work Sonic Visualiser does is
intrinsically processor-hungry and (often) memory-hungry, but the aim is to
allow you to work with long audio files on machines with modest CPU and memory
where reasonable. (Disk space is another matter. Sonic Visualiser eats that.)
