I think this has always been this way (not specific to ppc, - any serial port 
works
like this.  And I even think there's a debian bug about this already, quite old 
one.

Also please try at least qemu 8.0, or better yet - 8.1-rc2 from experimental.
The chance it works better is not high, but not zero either.
