xdg-desktop-portal-gnome is required by GNOME as of gnome-session
46.0-3 (well, things would probably be broken before that if it wasn't
installed, but now the Debian package enforces it). That version says
to check the portals.conf manpage if you need to opt into different
interfaces.

https://manpages.debian.org/unstable/portals.conf

I have closed this bug now, because from xdg-desktop-portal-gnome's
perspective, this bug is fixed now.

See https://bugs.debian.org/1050980

If you get a working configuration, I suggest you propose it to the
awesome Debian maintainer and to awesome upstream.

Thank you,

Yes, I just became aware of it after the upgrade and this issue got
triggered.

If any test or info is needed, please let me know.

If you don't use GNOME, you don't need xdg-desktop-portal-gnome
installed. xdg-desktop-portal-gtk is probably fine until the Budgie
developers create their own portal backend.

Which desktop are you using?

xdg-desktop-portal-gnome is the preferred portal backend for GNOME and
you need a portal backend installed.

There are important improvements we need in xdg-desktop-portal-gnome
46 but this is blocked on getting GNOME Shell 46 into Unstable (and
Testing) which we expect to happen soon after the 32-bit time_t
transition is resolved.

Bug#1068130: xdg-desktop-portal-gnome cause slow start up time in some application

2024-03-31 Thread Gaston Gonzalez
Package: xdg-desktop-portal-gnome
Version: 44.2-4
Severity: normal

After upgrading from Bookworm to testing some applications are taking
too long to launch. This happens in applications such as evince, eog,
thunderbird.

The delay comes from a timeout during the program start-up.

For instance, evince seems to timeout in the poll line:

futex(0x55f4aef70878, FUTEX_WAKE_PRIVATE, 1) = 1
eventfd2(0, EFD_CLOEXEC|EFD_NONBLOCK) = 10
write(7, "\1\0\0\0\0\0\0\0", 8) = 8
futex(0x55f4aef764f0, FUTEX_WAKE_PRIVATE, 1) = 1
poll([{fd=10, events=POLLIN}], 1, 25000)

Other programs like xpdf or ristretto do not show the same behaviour.

After some digging, it seems that the issue is related to the
applications using xdg-desktop-portal-gnome. After uninstalling it, the
problem is solved.

I am using Debian testing, kernel 6.7.0.
