 I'm sorry for my late reply. Gedit still crashes on this file when I try
 to open it. The same happens when I try to cat it in gnome-terminal. I
 filed a bug against gnome-terminal before but they couldn't figure it
 out.

 That's really weird.  Could you provide me with the file you have
 trouble with?  Can you open it with vim or emacs?  Could it be a
 hardware failure (see dmesg), such as a disk or RAM problem?

 Please test with the file I've sent, are both files (yours and mine)
 the same?

 Okay! I think this trace is more useful, although I don't think I really
 understand what's going wrong. Backtrace as you suggested is attached.

 I think the problem only occurs on your machine because of you locale
 settings, could you provide the output of locale and locale -a?

 Does the problem still occur if you run gedit like this:
 % export LC_ALL=C
 % LC_ALL=C gedit
 (open the file)

 Thanks, I could reproduce your problem in some cases with your locales.

 So what should I do now...

 Another developer (Sebastien Bacher) got a backtrace (I couldn't from
 gdb) and the bug is now upstream at:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=165526
