Bug#323828: tetex-bin: updmap fails while installation

As reported in bug #323826, there was an other error during the
installation. This gave a buggy texmf.cnf file, and you said that you
have now manuall fixed that (a fixed version is in our repository).

Does the updmap error now still occur, or is it fixed too? If not,
please run "updmap-sys" as root, and send us the output. If updmap-sys
exits with an error, please save the attached file as
"updmap-sys-debug", make it executable and run

./updmap-sys-debug 2>&1 | tee updmap.lg

and send us the file updmap.lg, too.

#!/bin/sh

# updmap-sys: Thomas Esser, public domain.

v=`kpsewhich -var-value TEXMFSYSVAR`
c=`kpsewhich -var-value TEXMFSYSCONFIG`

TEXMFVAR="$v"
TEXMFCONFIG="$c"
export TEXMFVAR TEXMFCONFIG

exec sh -x /usr/bin/updmap ${1+"$@"}

I've "purged" all tetex packages and reinstalled them and tetex-bin still
fails:

At this point, was tetex-extra already unpacked, or only tetex-base and
tetex-bin? What's the list of files

- in /etc/texmf/updmap.d
- in /var/lib/tex-common/fontmap-cfg

Thanks in advance, Frank

That this happens *after* you have purged all tetex packages indicates
that there are some old format files lying around.

You should get a working system by calling as root
fmtutil-sys --all

If this still not works, then you probably have still some old formats
lying around. Do you have locate installed? If yes, what does
locate latex.fmt
locate mf-nowin.base
say?

Best wishes

It still does not work and I found these two files in my filesystem for
which dpkg has no owner. I removed them and run dpkg-reconfigure
tetex-bin. Now latex works, but prints the same error message as pdflatex

The next one...

$ kpsewhich --format=fmt mf.base

gives which output?

Oh sorry, I missed them in my quote:

It should be (and probably is...) in /var/lib/texmf/web2c/ (since about
a year if you followed unstable or testing). Please send us the output
of the following commands:

ls -ld /usr/share/texmf/web2c
ls -ld /var/lib/texmf/web2c
ls -l /usr/share/texmf/web2c/

That is, it should contain only files with extensions tcx, pool, and
opt, plus symlinks to configuration files and the three mktex* scripts.
The symlink from mfw.base to mf.base is actually a bug.

You can delete (or move out of the way) all other files, especially
files with extension fmt or efmt. After that, please try again...

Bug#323828: tetex-bin: updmap fails while installation

2005-08-22 Thread Frank Küster
Hi,

Before closing down my mail program I just notice that there is this
unsent mail. Most of it is probably outdated after the various mails we
exchanged this afternoon, but other things might be still interesting.
And I'm simply too much in a hurry to go through it again.

Regards, Frank

Jörg Sommer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

This won't really help because as soon as a maintainer script runs
update-updmap, the fixed updmap.cfg will be overwritten. We still need
to add some code to either change syncwithtrees to do something useful
on Debian, or to simply exit with an informational message.

> config file: `/usr/share/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg'

This file shouldn't be there. You are now the third person who has it,
although to our knowledge none of the older Debian packages ever placed
it there.

Please look whether this is a generated file starting with

### This file was automatically generated by update-updmap.
#
# Please do not edit it directly.

or not, and then remove it or move it out of the way. After that,
please run (as root, and after either logging in as root, or getting
root via "su -", not only "su")

update-updmap
updmap-sys-debug 2>&1 | tee updmap.lg

and send again the file.

In this case, please do the following before any further debugging:

dpkg-reconfigure tex-common
dpkg-reconfigure tetex-base
dpkg-reconfigure tetex-bin

If this can be done without an error, calling updmap-sys manually should
work, too, and latex as well as pdflatex should work fine. If not, the
update-updmap and updmap-sys-debug calls are again intersting.

You have a stroke of luck, I saved a copy of it. Yes it was a generated
file and as you can see in the other mail it was touched today. If I see
it right, this was after the reinstall (purge) of all packages. I send
the mail <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 13:30 and the modification
time of the file was 14:12. Seems there is something strange going on.

Well, we should be sure that old .fmt/.efmt are definitely removed.
Otherwise this will happend again.

Probably something like adding in the postinst of tetex-base 3.0 a
clause rm -rf /usr/share/texmf/web2c/*.{fmt,efmt,base,log} etc and after
this generation of the new formats.

I think I can explain why it was touched: When you call updmap(-sys)
--syncwithtrees, it takes the first updmap.cfg that it can find and
changes it.

O, wait. It should find the one in $TEXMFSYSVAR/web2c
(/var/lib/texmf/web2c) first. What is currently the output of

kpsewhich --expand-var='$TEXMF'
grep '^[[:space:]]*TEXMF =' /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf

I'm not even sure how this could happen. The history went as follows:

- No TEXMFSYSVAR, /usr/share/texmf/web2c is a symlink to
/var/lib/texmf/web2c (so there were no real files in $TEXMFMAIN/web2c)
- We introduced TEXMSYSVAR (VARTEXMF at the time) and provided a proper
symlink-to-dir transition for $TEXMFMAIN/web2c, and we had code in the
postinst that forced the introduction of VARTEXMF/TEXMFSYSVAR in
  texmf.cnf.

Somehow installations managed to work with tetex-2.0.2 without VARTEXMF,
probably because of the error in the force-VARTEXMF code reported by
Jörg (thanks Jörg for looking so thoroughly at your output!) as #323826.

We should probably rename fmtutil.cnf and updmap.cfg, too, if they are
there. Or maybe

Good, at least that makes it clear why the formats in
/usr/share/texmf/web2c were found instead of the ones in
/var/lib/texmf. However, TEXMFCONFIG and TEXMFVAR should be something
else. What is the output of

grep '^[[:space:]]*TEXMF' /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf
grep '^[[:space:]]*TEXMF' /etc/texmf/texmf.d/05TeXMF.cnf

And

grep -A 1 -B 9 '^[[:space:]]*TEXMFCONFIG' /etc/texmf/texmf.d/05TeXMF.cnf
grep -A 1 -B 9 '^[[:space:]]*TEXMFCONFIG' /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf

grep -A 1 -B 7 '^[[:space:]]*TEXMFVAR' /etc/texmf/texmf.d/05TeXMF.cnf
grep -A 1 -B 7 '^[[:space:]]*TEXMFVAR' /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf

Das hast du selber gemacht, oder? Was wolltest du damit erreichen? Es
ist nicht sinnvoll und bringt die Reihenfolge der TEXMF-Bäume
durcheinander; es ist der Grund, warum die alten Formate in
/usr/share/texmf/web2c überhaupt gefunden wurden.

Uups. For the archive, I should probably translate this to english\dots

You did this yourself, didn't you? What did you want to achive with
this change? It doesn't make sense and mixes up the order of TEXMF
trees; and it's the reason why the old formats in /usr/share/texmf/web2c
were found at all.

This is ok for you:

And if yes, what is your timeline for uploading a new version to
unstable (new version of tex-common)?

I want to time this with the new version of the texlive packages
depending on tex-common >= 0.7

Yes.

I want to prevent the directories .texmf-var/ and .texmf-conf become
created in the home directory of root (he shares it with another user,
which makes it unusable for the user, e.g. no write permissons)

I reset them to $HOME/.texmf-var and -config. Is this OK?

Okay, so you're bitten by #294197. We should somehow inhibit creation
of non-existent directories.

> I reset them to $HOME/.texmf-var and -config. Is this OK?

Yes, you should do this. After all, the .texmf-var and -config dirs
will only contain the ls-R files if you always use updmap-sys (not
updmap), and won't hurt much.

Doing the test runs for tex-common is quite fast, since no concerted
upgrades of tetex from sid are involved. So I don't care much, and I
will have some time for Debian this weekend.

As for the other packages and the upload to unstable, I'm going on
vacation from September 10th to 25th, and I don't think it would be a
good idea to upload teTeX-3.0 shortly before that. Therefore I plan to
get things going again after the holiday (especially at work), and do
the upload then.

tetex-bin might deserve an other upload to experimental, though; I'll
see whether I can do that on Saturday.

Hmm, I know you will kill me, but is it possible a bit earlier:

Reason: I am going on holiday on Sunday, and want to upload new texlive
binaries for SARGE (!!) prior to this. But I have to wait for tex-common
(I don't want to provide my own one now on tug.org).

Then I am away for two weeks on holidays, returning on the 11. In this
time I hope to get some feedback from people using sarge.

What do you think? I have tested tex-common (as it is atm in svn) with
the new texlive-packages. Although I had to deinstall completely (there
is no Replaces for texlive, not necessary as these packages are
completely experimental and unofficial) all the texlive packages.

True, definitely.

Ok with me. If I find something different in texinfo, I let you know.

Best wishes
