Sorry about the slow reply.  I have been thinking about this, and I
think it would be possible, but I am reluctant to do much by default, as
it can be slihtly dangerous on some systems.  I believe acpid uses a
run-parts style setup, so it should be just a case of dropping an
appropriate script into /etc/acpid and making sure it does nothing by
default - either it is commented out, or it isn't called from the main
script, or whatever.

Care to write one up? :)

The hdparm package has support for setting drive parameters depending on 
APM power events. However, there is no such support for ACPI power events.

Maybe this could be added ? Or is there a nicer way to make ACPI 
backwards compatible with APM event handlers ?
