Bug#340373: spellcheck should allow use of fallback language

2008-02-18 Thread Drew Parsons
Package: openoffice.org
Version: 1:2.3.1-4
Followup-For: Bug #340373

Now that #227655 is fixed, we do have an Australian dictionary, so my
own documents are happy. I therefore do not need the fallback
mechanism myself.

I'll leave this bug open however for other environments, since the
fallback mechanism exists in /etc/openoffice/dictionary.lst but is not
automated. For instance I see there still isn't a Canadian English
dictionary (there is a South African one). Would Indians like an en IN
option? Do Latin Americans get es ES ?

The open question then is whether the OpenOffice developers think it's
reasonable for users to manually add the fallback to
/etc/openoffice/dictionary.lst, in the way which Gary explained.

Or would it be a better solution to allow this to be managed in
software as part of the OpenOffice UI, or at least as a Debian
postinst option? That would certainly be nicer for users.

So I'll leave this bug open for now.

OK, Format->Character was something I had missed, thanks for pointing it
out. I can use it to set the text to en(UK), in which case the
spellcheck does check it. That deals with my French/German
multicultural example.

As far as using it to check Australian text with a UK dictionary,
however, it feels like a bit of a nuisance which ought not to be
necessary. In my opinion it should possible to define a default for
each language. That is defining en_GB, for example, as the default
dictionary for any en_XX variant, if it doesn't have its own specific
dictionary.

The same would work for others, e.g. fr_CA falls back to fr, which is
set to an fr_FR dictionary, if there is no specific French Canadian
dictionary installed. Likewise de_AT would fall back to de, which might
be set to the de_DE dictionary.

I apologise if this kind of mechanism goes out of scope from what you
are able to do with OpenOffice.org. It should be something myspell
itself is able to do. Thanks for pointing out the Format->Character
workaround.

Happily for my specific situation, it can been resolved once bug #227655
is closed.

It's not. It's bound to the language of the text. You can e.g. have
german as document default language and format english parts as English
(UK) at Format->Character. Then that part is considered English (UK) and
will be checked with the en_UK dictionary.

Is that what you want? Or do I misunderstand this report?

Bug#340373: spellcheck should allow use of fallback language

2005-11-22 Thread Drew Parsons
Package: openoffice.org
Version: 2.0.0-2
Severity: normal

Hi, I have my documents set by default to English (Australian). What else
would I use, I'm Australian, right? Apart from spelling, there are
questions of date, decimal, money formatting and cultural pride. So
selecting English (UK) is not a satisfactory workaround.

As you are aware, there is no en_AU dictionary. In the Englishes, there is
only en_GB and en_US. So I've installed the British dictionary, and I'm
quite happy to use it as a "next best" for spellchecking my English
(Australian) OOo documents.

The only problem is, I can't (unless there's some secret option hidden
somewhere). OOo does not let me specify which dictionary I want to use for
spellchecking. It just says "this document is Australian, there is no en_AU
dictionary, so too bad". That is, when I click F7 for spellchecking, the
box comes up, but just says "The spellcheck is complete" and exits
immediately without letting me get to the underlying spelling dialog box
where I might have otherwise been able to select a different dictionary. Any
spelling errors are completely ignored.

I've defined the default document language in Options: Language
Settings->Languages to English (Australian). Likewise, I've selected the
dictionary in Language Settings->Writing Aids->Myspell Spellchecker (Edit)
to English (UK). But this spellcheck dictionary setting is being ignored.

It's not just English (Australian). What if I want to write a multicultural
document, with French and German sections, say. How am I supposed to
spellcheck them as well when the language used for spellchecking is so
tightly bound to the document default language?

Can you please be so kind as to decouple the tight binding between document
language and spellcheck dictionary?

Thank you,

Drew Parsons
