Oh boy, now I feel silly because I left out an important detail. I could
have sworn I stated it in my original message, but this occurs when
X-forwarded over ssh and not locally.

Interesting. So is your X server 32-bit or 64-bit?
So you are sshing TO the amd64 machine, from what other machine?

I'm running a 64-bit Xserver. I tried ssh from 64-bit to localhost, and
from 32-bit emulation to localhost, and that all worked ok. I haven't
tried from another machine with 32-bit X server yet though.

Thanks,
Hamish

The other machine is a up-to-date 32-bit Debian testing/unstable machine.
There is no problem with running xpdf X-forwarded in the other direction
(from 32-bit forwarded to 64-bit). What system info do you need about the
other machine?

Subject: xpdf segfault on amd64
Package: xpdf-reader
Version: 3.01-7
Severity: important

Hi, I'm running testing/unstable amd64 debian and xpdf segfaults for
me every time at startup. I'm not sure if this is actually an xpdf
bug or perhaps in some X library. I saw a post on the
linux.debian.ports.x86-64 from August 25th 2005 which is the exact
same problem (title: xpdf segmentation fault from: Karl Hoppel).

$ xpdf

Here's gdb's output:

It can't be a general amd64 problem as I'm running amd64 myself and
using Xpdf regularly. Perhaps it's a break with a recent library
upgrade; I'll upgrade asap and see how it goes.

I can also provide strace output if that would help.

Yes that couldn't hurt.

I have 2.3.6-1. Can you try upgrading? Seems unlikely to be the cause
though.
