Problems like this are usually caused by broken diversions, e.g. from
proprietary drivers.

I am using the packaged nvidia driver from non-free, but surely if
this causes problems it should be listed as a package conflict.

It's probably not a conflict but just a bug in the other package.

What does dpkg -S /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so show on your
system, and what version of the listed package do you have installed?

I don't know of any bugs in the diversions of the current version of the
nvidia packages; adding conflicts/depends because of buggy older versions of
packages is sometimes done, but not required, so I'm downgrading this bug in
any case.

Thanks,

$ dpkg -S /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
diversion by nvidia-glx from: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
diversion by nvidia-glx to: /usr/lib/nvidia/libglx.so.xlibmesa

nvidia-glx is version 1.0.8178-2

Removing this seems to make the xserver package installable. I guess the
nvidia package is a bit old to be expected to work with xorg7, but its
the most recent that's been in testing, so I expect other will have this
issue.
