Here's some more additional information.
I just tried using an SSL connection to the IMAP server on our internal
LAN ... and things worked OK. So the issue is not with SSL alone. So
it appears to be related to making an IMAP connection over a slower
remote connection.
Next I'll try to see if using a non-SSL connection remotely also causes
the issue. Then we can identify whether it's just the slower connection
that's causing a problem and whether SSL is a factor.
