hm. how long do you expect to be busy? I would really like to have the
new one, so, if this takes longer than a week or two, would you mind if
I step in as additional co-maintainer and upload 0.4x to experimental then?

no if you want to have it in the archive, i'll get it into experimental.

good idea.

I believe that decision to Maximilian. If a new usplash version is
uploaded, a new version of debian-edu-artwork need to be uploaded as
 well.

Bug#383248: Suggestion about usplash-themes

2006-10-18 Thread Daniel Baumann
Hi,

I've to questions:

1. When will the next upload for usplash happen? upstream is at 0.4,
where debian is still at 0.3.

2. Are you, David, interested in maintaining (or co-maintaining) a
usplash-theme package? If so, I would be happy to help
out/sponsor/$whatever and to contribute a derivated theme for
   debian-live.

Regards,
Daniel

That's for Maks to answer, last thing I heard was that it is held up due
to differences between how Ubuntu and Debian handle framebuffer modules
(IIRC they're modular in Ubuntu and static in Debian...).

I've never had problems with this since I use self-built kernels, but I
understand it needs to be resolved for the Debian package.

That'd be great. I'm not a DD so I can't upload the theme package myself,
so it needs a maintainer, I'd just like to know that I'll be able to
commit fixes to it :)

I'd also like to know what Maks, as the usplash maintainer, thinks...Maks,
would you like to take the usplash theme package or is it ok if Daniel
maintains it?

As for the status of the usplash-theme package itself, right now it still
needs upstream to commit one tiny patch (which I expect they won't for two
weeks or so since there's a new Ubuntu release just around the corner).
Perhaps if upstream OK's the patch, it could be added prematurely to the
Debian version of usplash. In addition, I also have some minor fixes made
and some slight artwork updates, so the tarball I posted a link to is a
bit outdated. I should really put it into a repository soonish.

I'll let you know when I've done so, and then perhaps you could review it
(especially the stuff in the debian/ dir since I haven't really messed
around with Debian packaging that much)?

As for debian-live customization, that should be really easy considering
how the package works: right now it takes a SVG image which is scaled and
used as background for the different resolutions, and it also uses a PNG
image as a progressbar which is incrementally drawn to indicate progress
(so right now the Debian text gradually appears as the boot progresses).
Just plopping in a new SVG/PNG should be enough to change the looks (you
may have to change the parameters in theme.h also).

It should be easy to change the package so that it builds several themes
using the same infrastructure (just some Makefile magic).

I'm not that in search for an additional package to maintain, so I'd
suggest you maintain it, I'll sponsor and co-maintain it (this way I can
do updates for the live-theme on my own, if needed). If you're happy
with that, I'm too :)

Thanks for the explenation, I though it would work someway like this.
Maybe you can even create both themes yourself?

Regards,
Daniel
