Bug#389126: gnome-session: hangs at login with xorg 7.1

Can you reproduce this bug with the latest gnome-session and dbus
packages? It may have been fixed with dbus 0.93 which also solved some
crashes and lockups for me.

severity 389126 important
thanks

I am not able to reproduce this problem, with either an English or a Spanish
locale (I tried French, but gnome seems to think the fr_FR.UTF-8 locale
doesn't exist when it definitely does). All the evidence so far points to a
dbus problem, not an X or a gnome-session problem; and the dbus hangs don't
appear for me either. So I'm going to go ahead and downgrade this bug.

Thanks,

If it doesn't, it would be really nice if you could pin point what
particular config item is causing the session to hang.

I've seen such a problem as well (unfortunaely I don't have the
problematic PC any more). But I remember that I could login with
the C locale but I would get this freeze if I started with the french
locale.

So you might want to check in that direction as well.

I think I had this bug today. It seemed due to dbus. Do you have
python-dbus or python2.4-dbus installed? Please send the output of:
 dpkg -l python\*dbu\*

(My problem was that I had the old dbus python bindings.)

   Thanks,

Probably a program which used to be start synchronously in your session
 doesn't start anymore.

Could you try moving your ~/.gnome2/session out of the way or to edit
it to remove / add programs until you identify the culprit?

Another approach is to strace gnome-session.

2006-09-23 Thread Stephen Touset
Package: gnome-session
Version: 2.14.3-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I recently upgraded to Xorg 7.1. Since doing so, logging into GNOME produces
my background, and dark-grey where the gnome-panel should be.

The system is still responsive, except no further updates are displayed on the
screen. I can open programs using keyboard shortcuts, but nothing other than
the background, and grey bars for the panel is ever displayed.

I logged in to GDM with xterm, and started various components independently.
gnome-panel, nautilus, gnome-settings-daemon, and metacity all started without
problem. However, invoking gnome-session results in the problem. I can Ctrl+C
out of it, at this point, but the screen is still stuck in a frozen state.

In case it's useful, I'm also using the latest fglrx driver.
