Changing the value of IMAP_ULIMITD in /etc/courier/imapd to 131072 did the
trick for me as well, and dpkg --configure -a could finish configuration.

I will doublecheck this with the author of Courier.

Will do!

But, is there a real problem with going from 64-128kByte? There's 2GB
in the box.

Please read the configuration file and help ulimit in the shell.
courier-imap shouldn't use up more than 128 MB on startup.
How large are your courier-imap processes in general (top / ps).

Did you use courier-imap before installing 4.1.1 ?

On my old box: courier-imap 3.0.5.20040712-1

But this was the first courier on this hardware.

Is the hardware and/or the courier-imap setup different ?

The logical set up is the same in every way. The old Box was a P4 1.3
with a gig of ram and standard ATA-disks, and the new one is a AMD
Athlon 64 3500+, 2GB and gdth RAID-system.

It was 65536

Does increasing the value or set it to 0 has an affect ?

0 did not help, but 131072 seem to work.

OK, now we have to find out why it uses so much memory on your system.
The best option at this point is probably to write to the courier-imap
mailinglist and ask for help.

Starting Courier IMAP server:/etc/init.d/courier-imap: xrealloc:

This is the first time I heard of this problem and it also unreproducible for me.
../bash/substr.c is no file belonging to the Courier sources.

What is your value for IMAP_ULIMITD in /etc/courier/imapd ?

No, I actually think it is a pretty stock system, but if you want more info
on my system, just let me know what, and I will provide.

Thanks for the help!

courier-imap-ssl seem to work fine (apart from that most of my users do not
