Its likely that it would be accepted by util-vserver upstream, if it is
submitted to them. They are looking for updates to this from people
knowledgeable about FAI.

 Hi,

I dont think it's a good idea to ship util-vserver with a broken build
method
for fai-vservers in etch. What do you think?

We're currently working on building etch vservers with the FAI vserver
branch. Currently this branch, based on FAI 3.1.2, is visible at:

  http://git.catalyst.net.nz/gitweb?p=fai.git
  (you can pull from git://git.catalyst.net.nz/git/public/fai.git)

Once we've got a basic proof of concept working, I'll rebase those
changes against trunk onto the people/mugwump/vserver-trunk branch
in alioth Subversion.

It would be nice if this build method could be accepted, as it has
some benefits over softupdate, particularly in terms of consistency of
vserver builds versus network installs.

The vserver-fai build methods only works with a very old branch of fai (from

use it, you would a.) need to downgrade fai and b.) switch to an unofficial
branch.

I don't think we want to have it in etch.

Obviously you (or rather the author of the vserver-fai build method) can fix
the vserver-fai build method to work with the current version of fai... but
if you dont do this, I think it's much better for the users of util-vserver
and fai (and also for the maintainers who will receive bugreports), if you
remove it.

It works just fine to install with debootstrap method.

Which is true (and I also use it to install fai vservers with it), but also
quite irrelevant :) Or rather not, because of this, you can safely remove the
vserver-fai build method.

Holger

Why would you remove it? It is already checking if the correct branch is
used, and if not, bails out. Seems like a lot of pain for no gain.

Good point.

Seems like a lot of pain for no gain.

Less confusion for the user is a gain, but you're right, the problem is not as
big as I thought. Thanks for pointing this out.
