You could try unsetting the compiz gconf settings by running something like
this:
$ gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz
and perhaps for gtk-window-decorator:
$ gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/gwd
If that doesn't work out, I've heard that removing the gnome config
(~/.gnome, ~/.gnome2, ~/.gconf and friends) *may* solve the black screen
problem.
There seems to be one remaining issue where the NVIDIA driver crashes compiz
or the gtk-window-decorator when returning from a VT, but that is more likely
a bug in the non-free driver because this does not seem to happen with any of
the free drivers.
