Curiously,

on my system

$ env LANG=en_US.UTF-8 audacity

gives a correct about dialog, while

$ env LANG=en_US audacity

gives the squares instead of characters, which is exactly the opposite 
behaviour as in bug #364927.

I confirm that this is indeed a problem in the version in etch. The version in 
sid does not suffer from it.
