Thanks for the file up. I'm on the ptk mailing list and saw the release
- I was unsure if the beta release was worth packaging. It sounds like
it is - I'll get a new release out shortly.

Bug#411129: perl-tk: Anti aliasing / xft support missing

2007-02-16 Thread January Weiner

One more update on the subject.

I have downloaded the newest perl-tk from CPAN.
$CPAN/authors/id/S/SR/SREZIC/Tk-804.027_500.tar.gz
(see announcement in the perl-tk newsgroups, msg id
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have compiled it, and now it seems to be rock solid, all the
previous problems disappeared.

Possibly, I have messed something when rebuilding Debian packages (I
don't really know how to do that); in any case, I am retracting my
previous retraction :-)

Bug#411129: perl-tk: Anti aliasing / xft support missing

2007-02-16 Thread January Weiner

Sorry, I retract my previous bug report.

While my own programs seem to be stable and running OK, apparently
there is a stability issue. Try running widget -- half of the
examples throw a segfault :-( Unfortunately, I lack time to study
this more.

I still think that the issue is worth looking into, because perl-tk
with xft support is just so much more convenient (and good looking)...
when it works :-)

I suggest you keep this bug open, or prepare an alternative perl-tk
package with xft built in.

Cheers,

I think this is backwards - the rules file currently has the former.
I'll do a new package release shortly.

Sure!

Bug#411129: perl-tk: Anti aliasing / xft support missing

2007-02-16 Thread January Weiner
Package: perl-tk
Version: 1:804.027-7
Severity: normal

Tk can be compiled with xft support, which allows for anti aliasing and
using all fonts accessible to xft, including TrueType.

Although this might have gone to "wishlist", it's more than that in my
view. It's not about programs looking nice fonts; it's about most of the
tk-programs having awful, almost unreadable, scaled bitmap fonts. Just
install perl-tk and run the program "widget". If the windows of this
program have fonts that look nice on your system, then there is another
configuration issue (extra font packages installed?) -- but in any case,
anti aliasing will not be supported.

I have been using perl-tk with xft support for a while now, and it seems
both stable and well-working.

Everything that needs to be done is to use
$(PERL) Makefile.PL INSTALLDIRS=vendor PERL=$(PERL)

instead of
$(PERL) Makefile.PL INSTALLDIRS=vendor PERL=$(PERL) XFT=1

in the debian/rules file.
