That could be a KDE screensaver issue, although it could also be in the X server's screensaver code. -- Earthling Michel Dänzer | http://tungstengraphics.com Libre software enthusiast | Debian, X and DRI developer
Bug#412275: no display and system freezes after adjusting time with KDE clock on 945GM graphic chip
Hi Brice, I installed the package using 'APT::Default-Release "stable";' in /etc/apt/apt.conf to keep my installalation stable with only the required packages from unstable. This gave me: laptop-rpl:~# apt-get -t unstable install xserver-xorg-core Paketlisten werden gelesen... After upgrading the 6 packages I used the 'Adjust Date & Time...' from KDE clock and changed the time in the 'Configure - KDE Control Module' dialogue. I decreased the shown time for two hours. After pressing 'OK' the screen went dark, but it came back after pressing a key. The new time was accepted. So it gone better, but in my mind it is still not OK. I recorded the session, if this is of any help. Ralph

Hi Brice, sure, I will install the new package. I would like to do a system backup before installing, because I am running etch. As I am on a business trip today and tomorrow, I will install the new package by end of this week. Regards, Ralph -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#412275: no display and system freezes after adjusting time with KDE clock on 945GM graphic chip
Hi guys, We had a report saying that a crash of the X server related to ntpdate is fixed in 1.3 (xserver-xorg-core 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-2 currently in unstable). See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=420548 Could you report back whether the system freeze when adjusting time in KDE is gone too with this new xserver-xorg-core? I tried something else: from my other PC I connected to the laptop via ssh. When the laptop freezes /home/rallo/.xsession-errors contains the following: Xsession: X session started for rallo at So 4. This worked from within KDE using a text console as well as in single-user-mode without a X server running using the virtual console. The new time was stored in the hw clock in both cases and displayed when using '$ date' after restarting the laptop. The time displayed using '$ date' was still one hour behind the time displayed by the KDE clock. To look after the one hour difference between the two clock-displays I used '# tzconfig'. It said "Your current time zone is set to Unknown Do you want to change that? [n]: y ... Your default time zone is set to 'Europe/Berlin'. Local time is now: Mo 26. Feb 10:48:17 CET 2007. Universal Time is now: Mo 26. Feb 09:48:17 UTC 2007.". After that the time show in the 'Adjust Date & Time...'-dialogue was the same as the time show in the KDE clock. When I then open the 'Adjust Date & Time...'-dialogue again and change the time, clicking OK still makes the screen dark and freezes the system. Indeed, this soudns exactly like another bug that was reported at least once a few months back. I applied a patch that was supposed to help with the problem, but apparently it wasn't the fix that we'd hoped for. Sorry, I don't have time to track down the original bug numbers right now, but I can try and fetch them if people want. - David Nusinow -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Brice, I keep having this problem with ntpdate, for example. It is not related to KDE, I think. If I dare to synchronize my local time over NTP and it happens that I am in the future, bang! The X server crashes inmediately. I think that it was reported repeteadly to upstream, but I did not search for a solution since some weeks ago. Just to be sure, can you try changing the time with the 'date' command instead of the KDE applet? > The two times still differ for one hour. > There's probably another problem apart from X freezing when the time is changed. Maybe the system clock is not stored correctly in the hardware clock before shutdown. I remember having problems like this on a core duo processor because hwclock needed the --directisa command line option. You could try without a X server at all, check the time from a virtual text console, change it, shutdown, restart and see what time you get. Anyway, that would be a bug in another package. Does it freeze again if you > change the time again? > > Brice > I decreased the time, because the KDE clock show a time that was one hour in the future in comparison to my local time. To decrease the time, I used the down-arrow next to the hour-field in the 'Adjust Date & Time...'-dialogue. After that I pressed OK and the screen went dark. Surprisingly to me, the time shown in the 'Adjust Date & Time...'-dialogue was different from the time shown in the KDE clock when I opened the 'Adjust Date & Time...'-dialogue. KDE clock show me 15:00, and the 'Adjust Date & Time...'-dialogue show me 14:00. So the 'Adjust Date & Time...'-dialogue had my local time and I tried to decrease it for one hour as described above. By the way when I enter '$ date', I get the same time as in the 'Adjust Date & Time...'-dialogue. When the system freezes, I have to turn off the laptop. When it's rebooted, I can reproduce the error by changing the time again. After rebooting, the new (=changed) time has been taken over by the KDE clock and the time shown in the 'Adjust Date & Time...'-dialogue. The two times still differ for one hour. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#412275: no display and system freezes after adjusting time with KDE clock on 945GM graphic chip
Package: xserver-xorg-video-i810 Version: 2:1.7.2-4 Severity: important I am running Etch on a HP Compaq nx6310. After seleting 'Adjust Date & Time...' from KDE clock I changed the time in the 'Configure - KDE Control Module' dialogue. After pressing 'OK' the screen went dark and the system froze. I wasn't able to restart the X-sever (Ctrl+Alt+BackSpace) or to get the display back. The only thing I could do was to turn off the laptop.
