As written, removing the broken symlinks and recalling aptitude upgrade
fixed the problem 'for me'. But it seems not a solution for the general
problem.
Anyways ... aptitude reinstall linux-image-2.6.18-4-686 went fine.

Not updating initrd symbolic links since we are being updated/reinstalled
(2.6.18.dfsg.1-12 was configured last, according to dpkg)

well your bug report gives _zero_ hints on how to reproduce the bug
nor any postinst sh -x output.
and it is beyond doubt that if it would be a general breakage other
peoples would already have noticed.

can you please purge the linux-image package, (you should still have
another one installed) and then install from fresh,
what happens then? if it breaks again we need the sh -x output of
postinst.

regards

For me Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] indicates, that
this is the case.

can you please purge the linux-image package, (you should still have
another one installed) and then install from fresh,
what happens then? if it breaks again we need the sh -x output of
 postinst.

The bug hit me, when updating from 2.6.18.dfsg.1-11 to 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12. The
system was updated from sarge to etch ~ 1 week ago. Maybe anything there went
wrong, with 2.6.18.dfsg.1-11?

# aptitude remove linux-image-2.6.18-4-686
[...]
# ls -la / | grep initrd.img
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 2006-07-05 14:20 initrd.img.old -
boot/initrd.img-2.6.8-3-686-smp
# ls -la / | grep vmlinuz
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 2006-07-05 14:20 vmlinuz.old -
boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8-3-686-smp

So I'm at the same point, where installation/upgrade of
linux-image-2.6.18-4-686 worked ('rm /initrd.img /vmlinuz fixed it for me,
but it seems no general solution.').

So I guess I can't provide more/better/deeper informations.

With kind regards, Jan.
