The ugliness is not the problem. From the ATI license:

Please consider these two hacks: http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33889029 They are ugly but flgrx works again. It looks it is not possible to have a cleaner solution without the help of ATI. We do not have the sources of the broken .so and there is no "higher level" way to fix xorg version detection logic.
