Since my contribution is derived from the current version of the _New Maintainers' Guide_, which is GPLed, my contribution must be GPLed as well, if distributed (and it has been just distributed to the BTS!). To be more precise, the current version of the Guide is released under the terms of the GNU GPL v2 or later, hence a derivative work can be distributed under the terms: * of the GNU GPL v2 only * of the GNU GPL v2 or v3 * of the GNU GPL v2 or later * of the GNU GPL v3 only * of the GNU GPL v3 or later I personally *dislike* the GNU GPL v3, hence I would choose to license my contribution under the terms of the GNU GPL v2 only. But, on the other hand, my contribution is really small: I don't even know if it is creative enough to qualify for copyright protection. As a consequence, I don't think it makes much sense to insist that the license of the Guide is changed from "GPL v2 or later" to "GPL v2 only", just for this small contribution. In conclusion, to the extent that my contribution is actually copyrighted, I hereby release it under the same terms of version 1.2.11 of the _New Maintainers' Guide_, that is to say, under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or any later version. But I hope you will *not* switch to "GPL v3 or later", and stick to "GPL v2 or later" instead. I hope that this clarifies. -- http://frx.netsons.org/doc/nanodocs/testing_workstation_install.html Need to read a Debian testing installation walk-through? . Francesco Poli . I agree. I hope you agree with the current license of this document and agree to put your text under the same one :-) If there is no objection, I will apply this soonish. Bug#431012: maint-guide: seems to state that non-free works can be included in contrib
Package: maint-guide Version: 1.2.11 Severity: normal Hi! Section 2.1 _Choose your program_[1] states: | * program must have a license, if possible free as according to the | Debian Free Software Guidelines. If it doesn't conform to some of | these rules but it can be distributed anyway, it could still can | be included in the `contrib' or `non-free' sections. If you are | unsure about where it should go, post the license text on | [EMAIL PROTECTED] and ask for advice. Firstoff, this includes a typo: s/could still can be/could still be/ More importantly, this statement seems to imply that works which fail to comply with the DFSG can actually be included in the contrib archive. This is misleading, since the _Debian Policy Manual_ clearly states[2] that "Every package in contrib must comply with the DFSG." I think the above quoted sentences should be changed into something like: ] * program must have a license, if possible free as according to the ] Debian Free Software Guidelines. If it doesn't conform to some of ] these rules but it can be distributed anyway, it could still be ] included in the `non-free' section. If you are unsure about where ] it should go, post the license text on [EMAIL PROTECTED] ] and ask for advice. ] ] * program should not require a package outside of the main section ] for compilation or use. If it does require any package which is ] not in main, it could still be included in the `contrib' section.
